Dara S. (dara85) I am thinking of joining Paper Back Swap. Even though I have looked at the pages and even belonged for a short times several years ago, I have some questions.
I never used their postage (I think that was a mistake.) Do you have to have a credit card to print their postage?

Do you have a limited time to send books out, when they are requested of you?
Thanks for answering my questions.

Adrienne | 8 comments You can purchase postage using either a credit card or paypal. But many members don't use the postage and prefer to buy it at the post office. We usually use media mail to send books.

How long does a sender have to mail the book after accepting a request?
It depends on which button the sender clicks when accepting a request.

If the sender clicks *I can mail in the next 2 day*
He or she has 5 days in which to mark the transaction mailed. The deadline is at the end of the 5th day.
If the sender clicks "I can mail in the next 2 days" the Status of the transaction on the request on the requestor's account page will read "Accepted".

If the sender clicks *I can mail later*
The book must be marked mailed by 2 days after the alternate mail-by date chosen. The deadline is at the end of the second day after the mail-by date.
If a sender clicks "I can mail later" the status of the transaction on the request on the requestor's account page will show "Will Mail by:" and the alternate mailby date chosen.
If a book is not marked mailed by the deadline
The request will cancel automatically, and will be passed along to another member offering a copy of the same book.
the requestor will NOT get an email when this happens.
the requestor will be able to tell that the request has passed along because the request date will have changed.
If there is no other copy of the book available, the book will go back onto the requestor's Wish List and the requestor will get the credit back.
the requestor WILL get an email when this happens.

Exactly the same things will happen if the sender clicks or on a request.

Note: The deadline for each transaction appears in RED on the right-hand side of the transaction on the sender's account.

It's really very easy. There are help documents available that spells everything out. Or, if you prefer, you can send a personal message to a tour guide or even post the question in the forums.

Everyone is very friendly and helpful. I joined about 3 yrs ago and have never regretted it.- if you join, please put starvinArtist in the space where it asks for who referred you. thx!

I think you can purchase their postage with a credit/debit card or through paypal. I think the fee they charge for you to 1: buy pbs money and 2: buy postage through them is ridiculous. The advantage is that it credits your account with the trade instantly, and you don't have to leave the house to mail the book.

You do have a certain number of days to mail...but if you can't make the deadline, you can pm the person your mailing to and tell them when you *will* be able to ship. I've done that at least 50 times, and only one person needed the book faster than I could ship it. The trick there is that once you get their OK to ship later, you still have to mark the book as being shipped before PBS's deadline, even if it hasn't and even if it won't be for another week or two. Otherwise, PBS cancels the trade and that's not fun for anybody.
All that said, 99% of my reading material comes from PBS and I've been real happy with the site.

I've also been using PBS for several years and love it. They used to charge a fee to buy postage through them, but THEY NO LONGER CHARGE A FEE FOR POSTAGE. I'm not sure about the PBS money part, I've not used that feature in a long time, but it may be they no longer charge a fee for that either. I highly recommend PBS.

Happy reading!

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) I think there's no fee to the post office (.19 for DC) if your book is going first class and you use PBS for postage. But there is still a fee of .47 to PBS to guarantee the credit if you use their postage. The fee covers the cost of the credits they have to refund when books go lost. I only use the PBS postage on book orders over 13oz so I don't have to go to the post office. I have never had a book I sent go lost so the credit guarantee fee seems like a big waste of money to me. It quickly adds up to more than one the occasional lost credit or book would cost. It does help pay for the site. I chose to buy the Gold Key membership to do that. And use their DC for mailing books for the games I play there.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) If you buy the Gold Key membership for $13/year you get 100 extra wish list spots, one free transaction a month as far as putting PBS money in or buying credits go which works out to $6/yr savings. It will also alert you when a book you are posting is on a friend's wish list. And when you order books it'll direct you to a friend's bookshelf if they have it or to someone geographically closer to you whether they are a friend or not.
