Any recommendations for other authors similar to, or an off-shoot of the same style that he writes.

I can personally recommend Haruki Murakami. An author I've read a great deal of and is cited as an inspiration. The book The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle is one of my favorites and displays some faint similarities between the two writers.

Italo Calvino comes to mind, although I can only recommend If On A Winter's Night A Traveler as it is the only one I have so far read. However, I have heard that this was a major source of inspiration for Cloud Atlas.
