This is so cool. We have members from the Netherlands, Australia, Poland, Canada, Mexico, and the United Kingdom and several states in the USA.

As far as the USA goes, it's interesting to see that the highest percentage of members is from my home state of Michigan, following by my son's in Florida. Wonder why that is?

Dick Peterson (dickpeterson) I'm one of the two in Kansas. I'm disappointed to see that there isn't anyone yet from my native state of Louisiana. I left the Bayou State for the Sunflower State in 1992. People ask me if I miss Louisiana, and I tell them I miss the people and food. Weatherwise, I enjoy sweating less here. Here's my summary: I'm a Kansan by residence, a Missourian by employment, a Louisianan by birth, a Southerner by the grace of God, and a Tybee Islander at heart.

I like your summary! I bet we have some Lousianaians here, but they haven't visited this thread to get counted. We have 345 members at this time and only a small percentage represented in this thread.

Born in Muskegon, Michigan and lived in Detoit suburbs until my father's work landed the family in Waverly and Erin, Houston Co., Tennessee when I was ten. Grew up there.

Went to Southern Illinois University in Carbondale while my family moved back to Farmington, Michigan.

Went to Los Angeles area of California on a lark with a girlfriend and didn't move back from Seal Beach to Michigan unitl about fifteen years later.

My work took me to Plano, Texas for three years and then back to Plymouth, Michigan, where I plan to remain!

Born in Waverly, Tennessee, soon after moved to Erin, Tennessee. At 8 we had a, what was to me very traumatic, move to Farmington, Michigan, and then I grew up in Farmington Hills (mailing address in Northville - that was always strange). As an adult I've lived in a few different towns in Southeast Michigan including Milford, Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, Plymouth, and now Westland. Kinda boring, eh?

Hmm, I'll try to look into that; see if I can find out why you don't show up.

I'm sure this is a stupid question, but do you have Wyoming set as your current home state in your GR profile? Just checking...

I tried to get an answer to why your state is not showing up and have gotten no response from the flag application gurus.

I am not even sure how this works....by magic, I think.

Based on the fact that you have opened this thread, the program somehow knows what state you hail from. I am guessing that it is by assigned IP addresses. Sooo, why is Wyoming not showing up? Because your IP provider is somewhere else? I don't know.

I will keep bugging them. For now I don't have an answer.

I've discovered one reason why some locations do not get flagged; which is when the member uses a satellite provider.

They are included in the count as "other location". No flag is staked because it is undetermined where the signal originates.

message 23: by Zorrofox (new)

Zorrofox This is a pretty neat feature but unfortunately shows a Union flag next to my name! Not cool. There's also no mention of Scotland's forthcoming independence from the rest of the UK. Again, not cool.

message 24: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 2574 comments Mod
Sorry about that, Zorrofox. I'm sure it's very frustrating for you to not be represented appropriately.

BTW, I visited Scotland a few years ago and loved it there. A beautiful country with so much history. Everyone was so nice to me. I enjoyed my visit very much.

Sorry that we can not control the map program.

Any one is allowed to be proud to fly their own colors.

Is the flag that I inserted above the image to use, or do you have a better one?

I totally agree. I've always had a serious case of Wanderlust, but haven't had the opportunity to indulge myself nearly enough the last few years.
Born & raised in Chicago. My first road trip was while in Highschool; a group of us drove to Florida and spent a couple weeks roaming the panhandle. After HS, I hitch hiked old Rte 66 East to West, then north on CA Rte 101. Both of those roads are dear to me. I took the northern route back, mostly Blue Line roads (Blue Highways: A Journey Into America is one of my favorite travel books, along with Travels With Charley: In Search of America). I want to travel as much of Rte 66 as one can still travel, again with my Daughter.
I then joined the Army, and nearly every weekend pass I got, I'd hit the road - until they caught me - and brought me back to base. After some base restriction, they'd give me another pass and the process would start again.
I'll stop my rant for now, but can go on and on . . .

What a wonderful snippet of your life. Although I've moved around a lot, I am really more of a home body. Any traveling I do, I would want to share with friends. I can't imagine striking out on my own.

Travels With Charley: In Search of America is a book that keeps cropping up in discussion lately, along with A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail. I'll have to check them out (from my armchair!)

I've always thought it would be great to travel the Route 66 roads. Doubt I'll get to it in this lifetime though. I've done most of my traveling and am now a homebody.

I was able to go to the map site and create a counter by country. Unfortunately I don't think it is going to work.

About two months ago Goodreads made some behind the scenes changes which affect interactive widgets. I have been discussing it in the Goodreads Feedback group, specifically addressing the failure of "Countdown/Up Tickers" and "Items Counters".

It had not occurred to me that "Flag/Guests Counters" would be affected as well, but now that you have pointed me to ka-tet, I am sure they are.

Unfortunately there is no solution forthcoming for any interactive graphic failures. I really will miss them a great deal!

Nice to hear from you!

Unfortunately Goodreads has changed some security policies and this inter-active map will no longer work.
