Are you taking part in the 2012 Goodreads Challenge?
I am. I amazed myself and actually ended up with 387 books read last year. My goal was just 300. I knew I loved to read, but didn't realize I read SO much as at least a book a day. So this year I am going to aim for 365 and see where I end up. How about you?

message 2: by Makeda (new)

Makeda | 31 comments My goal is just 6 for right now. The books I'm planing on reading are kind of long and I want to give myself enough time to get through them.

message 3: by Colby (new)

Colby (colbz) I put 65. I might increase that later, depending on how I do.

message 4: by Katrina (new)

Katrina (katmcv) I got to 119 this year, but only about 20 of those were read in the first half of the year. Going for 155 this year.

message 5: by Erin (new)

Erin Germain (demiguise) | 97 comments My goal last year was 100. I took some time away from reading during the really crazy period of summer (and missed it too much to do THAT again!), and still ended up with 108 for the year. This year I'm setting a goal of 125.

message 6: by Karen M (new)

Karen M | 418 comments GR's challenge seems to be the easiest one for me so I'm joining again. Surpassed my goal of 104 in 2011 but will set my goal at 52 and increase as needed.

message 7: by Christina (new)

Christina (royalesque) I read 14 books over my goal last year so I'm excited to join again this year with a goal of 35!

message 8: by Stefani (new)

Stefani Robinson (steffiebaby140) I barely, with seconds to spare made my goal of 52 last year...working 6 days a week definitely did not help lol. This year I am aiming for 70 and we will see if I can surpass myself. I want to work up to 100 but not overwhelm myself by making the whole thing my goal right now.

message 9: by Traci (new)

Traci (highxflyer) | 13 comments I set my goal really small last year and yet I still managed to keep upping it. So this year, I went ahead and set my goal for 100 even though I'm sure I will pass it and will end up upping it anyway.

message 10: by sonya (new)

sonya marie madden | 411 comments i hope to read 75 books this year.

message 11: by Moon (new)

Moon | 37 comments I made a goal of 40 last year, but I was a few books short of making it. I'm going to try for 40 again this year and hope I can remain focused and not get too distracted from my reading. All those video games will have to wait.

message 12: by Alondra (new)

Alondra Miller This is my first full year for the challenge; i joined this past august. I set my goal at 55, and am praying that i make it :)

message 13: by Chris (new)

Chris Due to the fact I have an intense spring term in which my head will be buried in textbooks reading, rereading, and rereading for a 3rd or 4th time, I set a more conservative goal of 35 which is still higher than last year's challenge goal. I hope I blow past it and have to reset it higher, but I wanted to be realistic.

message 14: by Karen M (new)

Karen M | 418 comments I passed last years goal of 104. I felt some pressure to hurry up whenever I read a book over 400-500 pages so this year I'm starting at 52 and will increase as I reach whatever goal I'm on. Don't need to put pressure on myself, the world is already doing too much of that.

message 15: by Teawench (new)

Teawench My goal is only 55. Little worried as life doesn't seem to be slowing down & I'm sorta plodding through A Game of Thrones.

Why do people reset their end goal?

Katrina (katmcv) Teawench wrote: "My goal is only 55. Little worried as life doesn't seem to be slowing down & I'm sorta plodding through A Game of Thrones.

I reset my end goal last year, as it was originally 42 and I reached that number some time in July. I then kept upping the goal until it was at 100. I finished on 119 books. Sometimes we read more than we expect. Alternatively, you could lower your goal if you feel it's too high by mid year or so.

message 17: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (shananigansreads) | 355 comments Last year I missed my goal of 200 so I decided on making it 150 for 2012. Got lots of good stuff coming up this year so I hope I can make it.

I guess I'd just rather set my goal and either pass or fail (or exceed). If you're going to change the number, where's the challenge or sense of achievement?

I'm probably thinking too much about this so feel free to ignore me :-P

I ended up having to lower my goal a bit because of work. I was going along very nicely to meet or exceed my goal and then for the last 6 months of the year got hit with mandatory overtime, saturdays, and holidays and had almost zero time to read anymore. I realized my goal was too ambitious for my current situation so made it a bit more feasible.

But this year, I am determined to not lower that goal by a bit. I will either do it or not, but I think its pretty enough that I will want to finish it lol.

in a way I agree. For me a challenge is something that you you could hit but won't be easy. Otherwise no challenge.

In 2010 I read nearly 177 books but alot of that was not working and listened to audio books

in 2011 was working full time so decided to set my challenge for 150 and miseed out by 27 as got into reading funk and read nothing in nov and half of dec so I have reset it to 150 so can try and hit the target -though still working full time and also studying

message 21: by Tayla36 (new)

Tayla36 | 14 comments I belong to the Challange: 50 Books club, so I'm hoping to make it to 50 this year.

2011 only made 42 and in 2010 only made 43.

Alondra Miller Teawench wrote: "My goal is only 55. Little worried as life doesn't seem to be slowing down & I'm sorta plodding through A Game of Thrones.

Why not? If I set it at 40 and end up reading 87, should i just leave it? i think it is okay to reset as you read more. Many people don't know exactly how much they read and never really track; so it makes sense to me why someone would reset it. Now if you don't really have time to read 100 books or 250 for that matter, why put it as a challenge in the first place. As long as people are realistic about how much time they can give to it. it doesn't seem like that big of a deal. just my opinion. :)

message 23: by Running (new)

Running I set it to 150, and I'm hoping I can hit that goal, but I'm not sure, I read between 50 and 100 last year.

I joined in November and set my goal for 50 and I surpassed it, I liked seeing that I had read 110%.

I'd read 30 books in 2010, so setting it to 42 seemed like the right idea, but when I realised I was going to hit that only halfway through the year, I upped to 60, then reached that, put it up again. I liked to continue stretching myself to see how far I could really get.

message 30: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany (herbtiff) I decided to try to get 3 more books read than last year, so my goal is 60. 2010 I read 56 and 2011 I read 57. So, maybe I really should only try for 58, but I am off to a good start already with 3 books under my belt.

Good point. Is 60 a good enough challenge to myself?

message 33: by Erin (new)

Erin Germain (demiguise) | 97 comments Tiffany wrote: "Good point. Is 60 a good enough challenge to myself?"

If 60 is something that you can accomplish, without making yourself too crazy and ignoring everything else in your life, then yes, it's a good number to challenge yourself. This is one of the things I like best about this challenge - we can tailor it to fit our lives, both in terms of what we read and how many books we hope to read for the year.

erin has a point

if you are averaging at mid 50 as a norm and when you do something you always try to do better then previously so rounding it to 60 sounds good. and whthere you want to add to that is depending on what you think you year is going to be like.

2010 I read 174ish books so last yr I set 150 as I knew that mid 2010 I found work and so I wan't going to have as muchh time- ended up short of the target by 20ish and that was partly as didn't do any audio books as car radion defunct and because had a reading funk in november

I am aiming for 150 just because I was close and hate missing targets- though this year I am also home studying and full tim,e work and single mother to a 5 yr old- luckily as live with parents minimal housework

Neko Just 50 books...I will probably end up reading more than that but it gives me some sort of idea on how much I want to go through.

If I could include comics in this challenge my amounts would probably be in the 200's.

I know what you mean. I do count graphic novels, but only if they have 100 pages or more.

Christine wrote: "I just finished one of my "currently-reading" books but it didn't update to my 2012 goals. Is this because I started the book in December?"

Might be. If so, you could just change the start date to this year, then it would probably count it, so long as the end date of course is entered as well.

usually is if you haven't confirmed the date you have read the book- by just confirming read it does not assume it was read at the time you change it. you have to go in and confirm date read inc year
