Pat I love most of her books, but I have to say that this one I had a hard time getting too involved in the many characters, and i tended to lose track of the bodies, past and present, each time i picked it up to read from where I left off. Not bad, but not one of her better ones. I think I have read them all now.

I agree. This was the slowest and dullest of all her books for me. I think having what I consider one of the main characters almostly completely absent had something to do with it, but I also had trouble caring about the mystery in this one.

Pat it kind of reminded me of the atmosphere in The Killing, the mystery show set in Seattle. Our heroine tromps around in the rain most of the time getting wet and nasty...:)

Lesley I agree not her best book, but it wont stop me reading her next book

Pat yes, I was quite sad when I realized I have now read all of them, write more faster!

April I enjoyed this book. Mainly because it take place in place that I am familiar with since I live in the concord area and in the past live about a mile from Charlotte Motor speedway.

David Freas I didn't care for it much either, thought it was weak compared to others in the series.
To Pat: I think part of the problem with this book is that the reading public--me included--and the publishers want the next book by best selling authors yesterday, leading to the author not having time to fully think out and develop the plot and characters. Plus, how many dire situations can an author put his or her main character in without losing their edge on new ways?
To April: I wasn't impressed by Reichs 'throwing around' the names of drivers. Anyone who reads a newspaper can do that. She really didn't give any insight into the complex world that is NASCAR.
Having said that, I will say I will read the next book in the series and hope it is better.

Ann Davis This book felt as though Kathy Reichs is struggling to think of new storylines. I feel the same way about Patricia Cornwell and James Patterson. It must be difficult to keep up good writing, but Michael Connelly does it and a few others.

I agree with Dave's view that the publishers pressure them into delivering books and it shows in the writing.

David Freas To Ann: I gave up on Cornwell several years ago when I realized I flat-out didn't like any of her characters or care what happened to them. And, yes, I agree Michael Connelly is an author who consistently turns out high-quality, engaging novels. James Lee Burke is another.

Lesley I agree with Dave I too gave up on Cornwall years ago especially after her ripper book. I started to think she believed she was her character in the book.

Tracy Tuggle This is only the second book of hers I have read. So far I liked this one better than Deja Dead. I'm a NASCAR fan so I also like the NASCAR information.

She isn't one of my favorite authors but I will read her books occasonally.

Beth Gibson I also had trouble figuring out how many bodies there were and which people being questioned belonged to which body. Not one of her stellar moments. The NASCAR background made it a bit more interesting and out of the ordinary, and since my husband is big fan, the names and the scene are familiar to me. However, that is not enough to carry the plot. If Kathy Reichs is running out of ideas maybe she would watch the show that is based on her book. We are in, what, Season 9? Add some more regulars to her cast, Temperance is definitely a loner in these books.
