Karen (kazzakrisanna) | 34 comments Often an old horror/ghost story that I read years ago will spring into my mind, but I can't remember what it's called or who it's by, I don't know if anyone else has the same problem.
The story I've been thinking of tells of a field with a copse of trees at its centre, every night something walks through the field and disappears into the trees leaving a trail in the long grass. The main character decides to lie in wait to see for himself what creature makes the path. It's a short story that I'd love to read again, can anyone help identify it?

Karen that almost reminds me of The Mezzotint by MR James, but I don't think it's the same story.

I like this idea of a thread. Thanks!

Karen (kazzakrisanna) | 34 comments You're welcome, I thought there may be others with a similar problem. I remember The Mezzotint, but it's not that, thanks anyway Danielle

Karen (kazzakrisanna) | 34 comments I can't remember reading 'Wailing Well' I'll rustle out my M R James collection and check. Thanks for the suggestion Todd, if it turns out not to be the same story, it will be worth reading anyway

Shawn | 333 comments "Wailing Well" involves boy scouts and 3 figures, so not sure if that's it (I just contacted James' publishing rights holder last night to confirm that "Wailing Well" was in the public domain, as I wanted to do an atypical James story to celebrate Pseudopod #275).

Dunsany's "Witch Wood" is also similar, but not exactly that plot either.
