Colby (colbz) Once you've read all of the John Green books, do you ever get into a rut thinking 'I want something funny, but I don't just want something funny. I want something JOHN GREEN funny, that will be realistic. And that perfect balance that John Green so flawlessly finds is just impossible to find anywhere else? I know I do.

So, in your opinion, what's the next best thing?

For me, it's Ned Vizzini. His books are humorous, but it's not like humor is the only thing. It's kind of genre-bending.
Like
It's Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini is sort of drama with a touch of dark humor, and Be More Chill by Ned Vizzini is sort of humorous scifi.

Colby (colbz) They are. I reccomend Funny Story above the others, but I love all three of his books.

message 3: by Colby (new)

Colby (colbz) I'm reading a book by Antony John and his writing is very remniscent of Greens. I'm not too far into it, so I can't tell if it's going to fill its potential yet, but I hope so.

message 4: by Colby (new)

Colby (colbz) Yue, I bought that book a few weeks ago, so I will.
Kiana, what'd you think?

message 5: by Colby (new)

Colby (colbz) I'm reading Five Flavors of Dumb NOOOOWWW.
And then I have to read The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini for my AP book for Honors English 3. And maybe THEN I'll read it.

message 6: by Colby (new)

Colby (colbz) I finished Five Flavors of Dumb by Antony John . It was very good, but it wasn't John Green good. It takes a lot for a book to be that good, though, so I don't fault it.

message 7: by Jon (new)

Jon (scottreadsit) I love Ned Vinzzini's it's kind of a funny story.. i didn't see the movie though.. i read be more chill also and the Book Thief

message 8: by Colby (new)

Colby (colbz) The movie was pretty good. It started in a different place, though-it opened with Craig checking himself into a hospital-and it filled in the rest later.

message 9: by Jon (new)

Jon (scottreadsit) Thisisnottom is so hard :O

message 10: by Colby (new)

Colby (colbz) I can't figure it out. I never got past the first clue! Hahaha.

message 11: by Jon (new)

Jon (scottreadsit) I know the first clue.. you click his left eye.

message 12: by Colby (new)

Colby (colbz) *goes to click left eye*

message 13: by Jon (new)

Jon (scottreadsit) Hey all you Nerd Fighters.. i have a suggestion.. Don't readWhy We Broke Up.. I loved Lemony Snicket's books but this book is terrible :( http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

message 14: by Colby (new)

Colby (colbz) Yeah, that book looks ridiculous.

I don't get it at all! Is there some meaning I'm missing?

message 16: by Colby (new)

Colby (colbz) Katherine, it leads to a hidden novella by John Green. I don't have the patience, and I have Zombiecorns waiting for me on my kindle :P

message 17: by Kat (new)

Kat (sugaraddict) | 15 comments Oh! Now I really want to figure it out. Lol

message 18: by Colby (new)

Colby (colbz) (You do realize that it's a free download, right?)

message 19: by Jon (new)

Jon (scottreadsit) I need to mail it to my kindle :) Thanks

message 20: by Jon (new)

Jon (scottreadsit) I personally like City of Bones but it's a completely different genre. Yet it's still a Must Read.

message 21: by Colby (new)

Colby (colbz) Grr. I hate The Catcher in the Rye. Thought-provoking, though.

message 23: by Colby (new)

Colby (colbz) Oh, I kind of liked the book Suicide Notes by Michael Thomas Ford and it was kind of funny.

message 24: by Lydia (new)

Lydia Fox I've recently read some of john green books and they were fantastic so i researched some more books today and i've found some more interesting authors. Stephen Chbosky, David Levithan, Kevin Brooks, Rachel Cohn, Maureen Johnson, Ned Vizzini, Markus Zusak and Kazuo Ishiguro. Hope this helps :)

Sydney (sydeli) Anna wrote: "Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys my favorite book of all time."

*applauds* You have good taste.

message 26: by Emelie (new)

Emelie (emli95) The Perks of Being a Wallflower, perhaps? I loved that book. And Zusak is always a safe card. I've heard that "Me and Earl and the Dying Girl" is supposed to be somewhat similar to John Green... I don't know. Seems good anyway :D

message 27: by Devin (new)

Devin Wells (devinkealey) | 3 comments I absolutely hated Me and Earl and The Dying Girl. It had absolutely no resolve and was cheesy and overall nothing like John Green. I do not recommend it.

message 28: by Devin (new)

Devin Wells (devinkealey) | 3 comments I just read Anna And The French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins and LOVED it. It was actually pretty similar to John Green, and he recommended it to us, so yeah. LOVED it.

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky.

I love Anna! Have you read Lola yet?

message 31: by Amanda (new)

Amanda I would recommend any book by a.s. king or Norwegian wood by murakami

I also really liked The Book Thief, but Sophie's World, L. R. King's The Beekeeper's Apprentice and all of Bill Bryson's books were good too.
DFTBA

Katie (katiehambor) | 4 comments Every Day by David Levithan.

message 34: by Eefje (new)

Eefje I would recommend:

Grab on to me Tightly As If I Knew the Way, by Bryan Charles

Killing God, by Kevin Brooks

message 35: by Gabrielle (new)

Gabrielle Smith (jazzygrapefruit) | 20 comments its kind of a funny story was great I highly recommend it... 13 reasons why was good kinda sad at times and not that funny but a well written book

message 36: by Tilly (new)

Tilly (tillzyyy) I recommend reading Shadow and Bone followed by the second book Siege and Storm! They are so good and will be a trilogy but the third one is not out yet.

message 37: by Sallie (new)

Sallie (catnips13) | 1 comments Even though Zusak is better known for "The Book Thief", I find "I Am the Messenger" more mind blowing.

message 38: by Amelia (last edited Jun 21, 2014 07:29PM) (new)

Amelia (amelia_bell) I don't know if you guys follow Epic Reads or their Story Crush Tour, but I was lucky enough to go this year and all four authors at my stop were AMAZING.
I recommend..
The Beginning of Everything if you like John's smart teenagers and romance. Bonus: author has a YouTube and goes to VidCon, Playlist, etc. If you've heard about the Moist Factory at VidCon- she was there.
How to Love if you liked Paper Towns. The author talked a lot about how she likes writing about people who have history with each other and how it affects them.
Faking Normal THIS BOOK. I loved it. I do attach a trigger warning for sexual abuse, self harm (the main character scratches her neck), and anxiety. But if you're ok with reading that, you should. Especially if you're experiencing or have experienced these things. It's really really helped me learned to cope.

Kenneth Garon (kennethgaron) | 4 comments you should stay with contemporaries after you read john green's.... :)
