What made the Harry Potter series different than other fantasy?

My hubby asked me the other day, why other book series didn't do as well as Harry Potter? After thinking about it, I came to the conclusion that it was because Jo made the characters live and breathe. I remember thinking as I was reading them, I need to get back and see what Harry is doing.
What makes a character, live and breathe, and not leave your mind?

Just correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's got something to do with this being the first fantasy book series with the main characters being teenagers, and teenagers fall much easily into idolization than grown-ups.
