I'm pretty sure this is Paint by Magic by Kathryn Reiss.It's been a while since I read it, but it definitely has a boy going back in time to rescue his mother from an evil painter.
Wow Tara, that is it. Thank you so so much. I started thinking about this book because I wanted to include it in a "So you'd like to" list for Amazon about parallel worlds.
Not to include it was not important, there are plenty of others. But, somehow, I kept thinking about it and it was driving me crazy not to be able to remember it.
