Today I finally started The Redbreast. It's been sitting on my shelf for ages, and it's always been overlooked, so I'm glad to finally be beginning. It's not letting me down so far, either!

I just had to check that all your books were first released over a year ago because some of them are new to me which is going to make it interesting for me:) Nice to see a mix.

I've got Possession on my list so maybe we can compare at some point.

If this is your final list could you click edit so that you can copy it and paste it in the Final Lists thread. Lookin' good;)

I'm 99% sure they're all over a year old...they've certainly been sitting around my room for a while :)

I think I'm more excited about my list because they have been books that I have wanted to read for a while:)

Oh, I've wanted to read them. It's just that after I bought them I didn't find the time, and then they just never seemed to get read. Most of those are books that I've been genuinely excited about, and it'll be nice to finally make time to read them :)

I have books everywhere - have you seen the size of my TBR list on here? You should see the size of my amazon wishlist - 'tis shocking :o

Sam (VanillaFountain) | 577 comments Mod
I still don't have my bookshelf up yet, half the things in my TBR challenge I don't even own yet :O I have books in about ten different places in the house it's driving me crackers. I need to get rid of some of the paperbacks but the swap section isn't going very well is it? :(

Good luck with yours Sarah, I shall be looking up most of yours as I haven't heard of most of them :) x

I finished The Redbreast last month and forgot to say so! I think I'm going to add dates to my first post, so I don't lose track again. I'm going to start The Moth Diaries this week -- I definetly need to start making some progress on my list!

Finished The Moth Diaries today, on my way back from an interview. I gave it four stars. There were parts of it I loved -- the atmosphere, the uncertainty, how real the characters felt, but it lacked a bit of resolution for me. I don't think you can call everything the main character claims to experience "neurosis" and just leave it at that. That aspect of it I did find disappointing. Still, though, a great read :)

I'll read Possession by A.S. Byatt in the second half of the year. I also want to read The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco later in the year too (wish I'd put it on my list).

bookishbat (morgaine_cat) | 90 comments good luck to everyone attempting the name of the rose. it's an age since I read it, must be 15 years or so at least, I loved it and want to read it again at some point, but it was one of the most difficult reads I've ever come across (though I thought it was very rewarding in the end) and it's one of the books that it has taken me the longest to get through, ever. (together with lotr and one or two non-fiction ones)

I was recommended it by my university tutor. I was expecting it to be on the difficult side, but I'm looking forward to attempting it. It's probably wishful thinking, but perhaps next month.

I'm going to start Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro today. I've been looking forward to this one for a while!

Finished Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro last night. This is definetly one of those books where your enjoyment of it is dictated by how much you've heard about the plot beforehand. I think you'd lose the suspense entirely if you knew exactly what was going on.

I'd heard a few rumours, so it wasn't a complete surprise to me, but it definetly plunges you into a world that's both very similar and very different from our own. The clues about what's going on are built up very gradually, so you develop a dawning awareness that's kind of unsettling.

I'm glad I finally got around to reading this -- on reflection, I can say I really enjoyed it. It's not something I felt I really understood entirely until very close to the end, but I think that made it all the more affecting. Definetly a good read!

Finished Fevre Dream by George R.R. Martin a couple of nights ago. I really, really enjoyed it once I got into it. My university tutor told me it was haunting and beautiful, and he was right. It's one of the best vampire novels I've ever read -- second to Dracula in my estimation -- and I wish I'd read it sooner. Better late than never, though!

I think I'll read this next month - sounds excellent!

Just started Shades of Grey (Shades of Grey, #1) by Jasper Fforde . It's more gripping than I expected, actually :)

Finished Shades of Grey (Shades of Grey, #1) by Jasper Fforde yesterday. I actually really enjoyed it, and I'm looking forward to the two future volumes. It leaves the story on a bit of a knife edge, so I really do want to know what happens next. It's quite a thought-provoking look at a post-apocalyptic society, but not done in the usual humourless fashion. Worth a read!

Started Nemesis by Jo Nesbø last night. I found it really easy to get into, so here's hoping it's a good read!

Finished Nemesis by Jo Nesbø yesterday. I really enjoyed it -- it had me guessing right until the end, which is what I look for in a crime novel. I think Harry's character is developing well, too. I'm looking forward to catching up with him again in The Devil's Star by Jo Nesbø

Started The Devil's Star by Jo Nesbø . I've only read the first couple of chapters so far, but I think it's going to be a good one!

Whoops! I forgot to update this once I'd finished The Devil's Star. Anyway, I did, a couple of weeks ago now. I wasn't all that keen on the plot in this one -- it seemed pretty weak compared to the previous two. I'm glad that one character has finally bitten the dust, though. I didn't see it coming, but it was thoroughly deserved.

My current temporary job finishes this coming Friday, so I'm looking forward to having some time to catch up with my reading again. Hopefully I can make a bit more progress with this challenge before the end of October lol :)

More reading? Must be torture;)

Can you do me a favour and post on the Fevre Dream thread? It's such a great book but the thread is spookily quiet:( I'll try to post at some point tomorrow before I fly out early on Thursday.

I've found working a real pain, actually. Either I come home and I'm really tired, or my eyes hurt from staring at a computer screen all day, and then I can't read anyway. Or I have jobs to apply for/interviews to prepare for. Still -- I have a couple of weeks now that I plan to make the most of!

I've posted on the Fevre Dream thread -- apologies for not having done so sooner. I really don't mean to keep abandoning the group. My absences have paid off, though -- I was offered a fixed-term job (until next May) last Wednesday, and I had another interview on Friday that I think went well, so I should have a few less demands on my spare time now. I plan to spend it reading, naturally!

Started The Redeemer (Harry Hole book, #6) by Jo Nesbø yesterday on a long train journey. I'm enjoying it more than I expected to, actually. There are some pretty abrupt changes in character that have me confused for a second, but I'm getting used to that. It reminds me quite a lot of The Redbreast by Jo Nesbø in style, which I did enjoy. Hopefully it'll be a good one!

Really enjoyed The Redeemer (Harry Hole, #6) by Jo Nesbø . I think it has one of the best plotlines of the series so far -- really gripping.

Started The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux last week, which I'm reading during my lunchtime at work. Again, I'm enjoying it so far. It's actually a faster read than I thought it was going to be.

All progress is good progress!

Rather than set myself a new 12+3 challenge for 2013, I'm going to work on finishing this one. 6 books to go!
