For my 12+3 Challenge for this year I've chosen books mainly from my ever increasing to be read pile at home. Some of these are books that the group has already read, and I never got round to. There's also 3 books that I started and didn't finish, so I'll start with these first.

I've also included some classic gothic tales that I think I feel I should read ... and a couple of other classics (Slaughterhouse Five and One Hundered Years of Solitude) that I would like to read.

1. Nights At The Circus by Angela Carter FINISHED APRIL '12

2. The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters

3. The Shadow of the Wind (The Cemetery of Forgotten Books, #1) by Carlos Ruiz Zafón

4. The Luminous Life Of Lilly Aphrodite by Beatrice Colin

5. Perfume The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Süskind FINISHED JUNE '12

6. The Turn of the Screw by Peter G. Beidler FINISHED FEBRUARY '13

7. The Yellow Wallpaper and Other Stories by Charlotte Perkins Gilman FINISHED FEBRUARY '13

8. The Silent Land by Graham Joyce

9. The Raw Shark Texts by Steven Hall

10. What Was Lost by Catherine O'Flynn

11. When God Was a Rabbit by Sarah Winman

12. American Gods by Neil Gaiman

13. Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut

14. One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez FINISHED AUGUST '12

15. The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe

Hi mate - they are meant to be books that you have wanted to read for over a year:) (just started to look and noticed The Night Circus which was published 2011) I got the idea from a few other places and that's where the being in your TBR pile/list/head for over a year things came from x

Oh no worries. My fault for not reading it properly ... got loads of books on the pile to shuffle around with. x

How's your list going? I love your list - could have written it myself x

Aw cheers Kirst :) I'm currently reading Nights at The Circus, it's a gem of a book! I've got the notes too to read along with it. I've just bought a copy of Luminous Life of Lilly Aphrodite and it just looks fab, hope I get time to start that one soon. Other than that I'm a bit slow on the 12+3 ... I need to catch up!

Well between Amazon and eBay last night I ordered the five books from my list that I was yet to buy: The Yellow Wallpaper, The Fall of the House of Usher, 100 Years of Solitude, Turn of the Screw and Slaughterhouse Five. I think I paid around £20 including postage.

Ooh excited I'll a full set with me soon :)

Finished Nights at the Circus by Angela Carter . I have a book of the notes too, so been reading through that aswell. Just such a fantastic book, exploring feminism and such a colourful tale too. It's a book that will stay with me and I'll read it again.

Angela Carter is one of my favourite writers and I might re-read Wise Children also, when I next return to her work. I'd like to eventually read all her novels and short stories, I have a few of them at home.

Thanks for the offer Sam :) I have my whole list now though, had a big order from Amazon, mostly second hand. Lovely to have them all lined up in the bookcase! Shadow of the Wind I spied in Oxfam, so didn't have to pay much for that one either. x

Brilliant! Glad you have them all ready :) I really must write mine down in case I see any in charity shops and stuff :) x

Any progress? I'm trying to get halfway through by the end of the month - 2 books to go :/

Oh dear, I was hoping you wouldn't ask! ;) I'm way behind you Kirsty, but at least I get to read 100 Years of Solitude next month and I'm reading Perfume at the moment ... so that's two I can cross off :) I need to time manage more as I'm not getting enough reading time in general in and that gets me frustrated. I got a few hours sitting in the sun yesterday with my book, and that was lovely!

I have only just read 2 and I've hit a snag of finding that 2 of the books are a drag and the others I have picked up need no distractions. I really should have made my list less of a challenge lol:)

I am having similar problems, it's harder than you think to stick to a list, I've only read two :O

It really does feel good when you finish a book that you've wanted to read for a while and have never got round to though doesn't it? Even if it's tricky to get through the list (and realise the whoppers you have on it lol) it is a goooood feeling. Every time someone crosses off a book on their list I dance a little jig inside;)

It is good to cross another off the list. So many other good books I'm coming across that it's easy to get distracted. I loved Perfume and enjoying One Hundred Years of Solitude now ... so lucky that these became our monthly themed reads and I was made to get round to them! :)

I haven't read all that many from my list either :) I'm finding, though, that I am enjoying the ones I do get around to reading, and wishing that I'd read them sooner.

I'm still going to try and complete my list before the end of the year, or at least get as close as I can!

Finally read The Yellow Wallpaper and Turn of the Screw both classic gothic tales. The Yellow Wallpaper is a short tale about a woman's descent into madness.

I enjoyed both this and Turn of The Screw ... although maybe I enjoyed the plot of Turn of the Screw moreso than the dialogue - which can be a bit exhausting. The story is left quite open-ended and you never really know if the ghosts at Bly were really there or a symptom of the Nanny's hallucinations. Florence and Giles (that we read as a group last year)is based on this Victorian story. Not exactly the same but very similar and I have to say I found Florence and Giles the more scary tale of the two.
