You can write as much or as little as you like in either Dutch or English. Thanks!

BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) | 3056 comments I'll start, shall I? Although I’ve used Goodreads over the years to look up info on certain books, I didn’t become a member till the summer of 2011. Recently, I have also become co-moderator of this discussion group. Almost all the literature books I own, as well as some children’s books and books I was lent recently, can be found on my Goodreads bookshelves. Feel free to browse!

My love for books and reading, which are two separate things if you ask me :-), started when I was still a toddler. My mum used to read to me when I was little and I suppose she is the one who started my ‘reading addiction’. As a teenager, I must have borrowed hundreds of books from the local library. My love for books & literature increased even more because of the compulsory reading lists in secondary school and it finally resulted in reading English (English literature at a Dutch university is far more than just British literature, as it can be literature from all English speaking countries, even though the focus is on Britain). By now I only read my own books, as lots of them are still unread, simply because I can't stop buying books I like (sigh...). As to buying new books, you'd better have a look at my quote by Mary Ann Shaffer on buying books, because that quote is so very much me..... :-)

Other than reading my own books, I occasionally read a book someone has lent me. I'm a native speaker of Dutch with a good command of English and therefore read books in both Dutch and English. I read Dutch/Flemish authors as well as foreign authors. ‘Foreign’ to me are mostly books written by English speaking authors and those books I usually read in their original language. All other languages/books I tend to read in a Dutch translation.

Enough about me ;-) Who's next..?

message 3: by Gerda (new)

Gerda (Libtech) | 11 comments Ok, I'll be next.
I'm Dutch but I live in Australia. I can read in Dutch and English, equally fluently.

My mother worked at our local library in Holland (Schiedam) which meant I was never without reading material. Apart from the fact that I had a free library membership, she also used to bring home stacks of children books that were being thrown out (about once or twice a year). That event was like "Sinterklaas".

Now, I'm a librarion myself and work at my local library as well as a school library. I'm never short of a book to read, usually there's a pile next to my bed and on one of my bookshelves. I don't buy fiction books for myself unless I go on holidays to Holland. That way I can leave the book there and bring back Dutch books to read.
I get all my fiction books from my library. I do buy non-fiction books on topics which interest me. I have just today bought a book on bird photography. Or I might buy a travel guide or a book on textile art or aromatherapy. Whatever interests me.

I occasionaly will read a German magazine (from the library ofcourse).
And occasionaly I will get a Dutch book via inter library loan from another Australian library.

That's it from me.
Next..............

janine Hi everyone!

Even though my profile page says I live in Mauritius I'm Dutch and live in the Netherlands.

I've been an avid reader for as long as I can remember. There are even several pictures of me 'reading' that were taken before my first birthday. I also 'wrote' before I could write by mimicking the letters from my books and asking my parents to read what I had scribbled down. I was always astonished when they said they couldn't read it while they could read the books I had copied the words from.

My love for books and words has stayed with me and has often guided me in the choices I make. I studied Dutch literature in university and have worked for a publisher.

I read books in both Dutch and English and if I want to challenge myself I might even pick a German book to read. I usually read fiction.

Welcome to Goodreads and glad you decided to join our group! I noticed your response to the 'group read' thread, thanks for that. Did you also check out our two polls yet and put in a vote?

message 6: by Marlous (new)

Marlous I’m usually not very good in introducing myself, so I'll keep it short. I live in the Netherlands. I’m 26, love to read and will read almost anything. There are a few exceptions I’m not a big fan of fantasy, SF, Scandinavian crime novels, most of the popular Dutch female authors like Saskia Noort and - sorry don’t know the English word – ‘boeketreeksachtige’ books.
I read books in Dutch and English, if I can get my hands on it, I’ll read English books in their original language. I don’t read a lot of books by Flemish/Dutch authors, but as a rule I just pick a book based on whether or not I like the author and if I’m interested in the story. If you want to share something about a book you have read or want to read, feel free to do so.

message 7: by Gerda (new)

Gerda (Libtech) | 11 comments Here in Australia, if we talk about "boeketreeksachtige" boeken, noemen we ze Mills & Boon. Dat is een uitgever van "romantische boeken". Lees ik ook niet trouwens.

message 9: by Judith (new)

Judith I'll introduce myself then :) I've only just discovered Goodreads via Facebook and I'm quite happy that I have! Comparable to many in this group, I think, I have been reading from quite a young age. The library was only 5 minutes away, so I went there several times a week to get new books. My brother never used his library card, so I could use it to get more books than was allowed with one card :D I was interested in everything, be it informative, sci-fi, sports etc.
Nowadays I read mostly fantasy, but I also like psychology books and books about sports (I study Human Movement Sciences, so I should like sports). Classics are just that, and I try to read many of them, both English and Dutch.

message 10: by Ireen (new)

Ireen | 1 comments I just joined, so I'll introduce myself as well :)

I am a Flemish student; I studied Spanish and English language and literature and just finished an MA in Ireland. I therefore read mostly in English. I am currently training to become an English teacher and I am taking a subject 'Media, Culture and Education' at the University of Ghent. For an assignment we were asked to become a member of goodreads and check out its possibilities especially in terms of educational purposes. Since it is Boon year, our professor suggested to start out search there. And in the light of getting familiar with Flemish and Dutch literature again, I joined this group.

As a side note: I ordered books at bol.com recently and got the new Lanoye for free. And I am actually looking forward to get cracking into that one.

message 12: by Anne (new)

Anne (annevo) Hi, Anne here, thirty-something from Rotterdam. I read almost every kind of book, including teen novels and thrillers but also literature and non-fiction. I prefer to read books in their original language if I'm able to understand, so when I read Dutch it's mainly Dutch authors.

message 13: by Tom (new)

Tom Why hello everyone.

I'm Tom, student at the KU Leuven (Kortrijk for now), trying to get a grip on both French and English. So eh, you'll be seeing a lot of that when you visit my profile.

Besides that, I like to spend my free time reading some more recent works. Variation is king.

I also try to get some writing done myself, mostly in Dutch. Just give me a poke if you're interested.

That'll be it for now!

message 14: by Renske (new)

Renske | 119 comments Although I'm not completely sure this is the right group for me, as I don't read that much literature, I will introduce myself. I read more often fantasy and/or young adult books. Maybe this group will help me to change that a bit.

I read both Dutch and English (and some children's books in German) but it depends mostly on what is available at the local library as I can't buy every book I want to read.

Hi Renske,

Just to clear some things up, this group is for ALL Dutch and Flemish readers (and for non-Dutch/non-Flemish readers who are interested in Dutch/Flemish literature). So even if you do not read literature you should be fine :-)

There are members who read crime novels, books for children, sci-fi, fantasy and so on. And yes... literature as well :-0 But we try to offer something for everyone, so do have a look around and check out some of the topics and threads.

Enjoy!

I read books since I was very little, My favorite genres are sci-fi/fantasy and Horror but I also read literature, my favorite authors are Haruki Murakami and Stephen King but I read much more than only them. I dont read too much dutch novels but I try too change that.

message 17: by Peter (new)

Peter Crauwels Hello,
My name is Peter and I live in Lier, Belgium. I've been reading books for as long as I can remember. As a kid I was always glad it was friday. Not because of the weekend, but because that was the only evening the local library was open. For years it was a pity that we could only have 4 books at a time, cause I usually finished reading them by sunday afternoon.
For years I only read thrillers and detectives, but now I read whatever I think might be an interesting book.
My favorite authors are Jonathan Kellerman, Elizabeth George and Isabelle Allende. I have to admit that I hardly ever read Dutch books, but I'm trying to change that!
A few years ago I started writing myself and published 2 books (both thrillers). It's only a hobby though, my day job is being a nurse.

Greetings,

next!

annelot (annelot_prins) Hi to all, my name is Annelot (23) and I live in Amsterdam. I've read for as long as I can remember, about two books a week. I study literature in Amsterdam, and therefore also read a lot for school/university. I prefer reading English, the language is richer and has more opportunities in it, but of course, as a native Dutch woman, I also like reading some Grunberg or van der Heijden. Actually, when I read in Dutch, I like flemish writers more: you just got to love Verhulst and Dewulf!

Interesting that you should mention your preference of Flemish authors over Dutch ones. I too read a lot in English but when it comes to Dutch & Flemish literature, I've noticed that I tend to prefer Flemish literature over Dutch when it comes to modern authors. Having said this, I have to add that Hella S. Haasse is still an all time favourite with me when it comes to Dutch literature :-)

Eva (evafc) | 12 comments Hi everyone,

I just signed up for this group. I hope it's something for me. My name is Eva, im 36 and Dutch. Mum of two young children. I used to read every moment of the day, but life has been hectic, and my ammount of books read each month decreased. My absolute alltime low, was only 3/4 of a book read during my vacation two years ago.

Things got better again since then luckily. I am a member of a reading group, have been for some time. But i noticed i have more time, and would like to read more, and also share with others. I read a lot of english and american literature, preferably also in english, but i do like reading Dutch literature as well. I also always have been fond of children's book, and still read them. Now with my kids have shopping sprees in the childrens book store ahum.

Hope to speak to you through the forum.
O, i think, i'll skip Tonio for now. It's supposed to be an amazing book. But being a mum has left me with some weak spots on this matter. I will save it for another time some years in the future.

Eva

Madeleine Schouten | 1 comments Hi all, my name is Madeleine (45) and I live in Den Haag. I'm kind of catching up on reading literature again, after a rather longish period of reading hardly any fiction at all. I was invited to Goodreads a few weeks ago and am enjoying browsing the different categories and rediscovering of the world of books. I've just delved into Grunberg's latest, De man zonder ziekte, and I'm curious what others here are reading.

Laura Hallo allemaal,

mijn naam is Laura.

In ieder geval veel leesplezier gewenst!

Bookworm Hi all,

my name is Bente, I'm 20 years old and I live in Noord-Holland. I've been on Goodreads for a while now but wasn't that active (it takes so much time to update your shelves, I tried searching for books I've read but it's just too much). I don't read that many Dutch books though. For non-Dutch books I prefer English but I also read German books and sometimes Danish, Swedish and Icelandic (I love mythology, especially Norse. And Greek, but I can't read Greek that well - I wish) When I was a kid/young teenager I read a lot but right now I don't have that much time for reading, unfortunately. I like literature and fantasy. I grew up with lots of literature, not only Dutch but also from other countries (for example Russia and South America) and I went at least once a week to the library to read every book that caught my interest. I'm planning on reading more Dutch books - after I've read the others that are on my constantly growing to-read list...

BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) | 3056 comments @Bente,
Welcome to our group.

The autumn challenge won't be disclosed until 21 September but from what you wrote, it sounds as if it's going to be right up your street :-)

As you also mentioned your intention to read more Dutch books, the upcoming group read, or the Summer Challenge, might be to your taste as well.

Have fun!

message 30: by Ennie (last edited Aug 05, 2012 02:06AM) (new)

Mooij | 2 comments Hallo allemaal, ik wilde me ook even voorstellen.

message 34: by David (new)

message 35: by Bookworm (new)

I read all different kind of books, but mostly thrillers (mostly in dutch), fantasy (mostly in english), chicklits (on holidays) and romans. Not the heavy literature, but books with a modern thought or theme like books with martial arts in it, or curtural things. I am looking for soms good suggestions to read.

My favourite author is Douglas Kennedy. Other favourite writers are: The Brontë-sisters, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Esther Verhoef, Pat Conroy, John Irving, Corine Hartman, Freya North, Tatiana de Rosnay, and a few more.

Other hobbies are horseback riding, learning the Norwegian and French language and sailing.
