April | 42 comments Can we as questions to the Mod about books we want to read here?

The Titled Americans: Three American Sisters and the British Aristocratic World into Which They Married is a book set after 17th century about americans and the British Aristocracy they marry. WIll this work for #12?

April | 42 comments Arbella Stuart was the niece of Mary Queen of Scots and first cousin to James VI of Scotland. Acknowledged as her heir by Elizabeth 1, Arbella's right to the English throne was equaled only by James.

Would this make Arbella a princess? and acceptable for #4?

The book is Arbella: England's Lost Queen

Thanks for the questions, April. I definitely say YES to the Arabella one.

For group purposes, to be considered Royalty Related at least one of the central characters must be considered Royalty. If that fits for the first one, then go for it.

Rebecca Huston (telynor) | 71 comments If anyone has any suggestions for Asian royalty, I'd love to hear them.

Cindie | 24 comments Sovereign Ladies: The Six Reigning Queens of England

THis is about Queens of England: Mary I, Elizabeth, Mary II, Anne, VIctoria and Elizabeth II. Would this work for #7?

message 6: by Christine (new)

Christine (chrisarrow) Rebecca wrote: "If anyone has any suggestions for Asian royalty, I'd love to hear them."

Fiction:

The Last Empress

Nonfiction:
Dragon Lady: The Life and Legend of the Last Empress of China

Would a book about Gengsis Khan's daughters count? Also would a book about the princes in the tower or The Perfect Prince: The Mystery of Perkin Warbeck and His Quest for the Throne of England count as a book about princes?

Yes, this one would work. It is definitely about Royalty and takes place in England.

Two things,

Yes, a book about Ghegis Khan's daughters would work for Asian Royalty.

Second, The Princes in the Tower would certainly work, but I would also accept The Perfect Prince since Perkin was a "Prince" for a while.

message 9: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Huston (telynor) | 71 comments Chris: I've read those two books, so they won't work, but thank you for mentioning them! I fear I am utterly burnt out on the war of the roses -- Penman ruined me for that! I am thinking about a book about the Stuarts for England, however: The Sickly Stuarts: The Medical Downfall of a Dynasty

Actually, we usually differentiate England from Scotland, Rebecca, but I think I will say here that by England I really meant Britain, so that fits.

As for the Asian Royalty, what about the book about Ghegis Khan's daughters? Or Ghengis Khan himself for that matter. Also, any book on any of the Shoguns in Japan would work, or the Emperor of Japan.

message 11: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Huston (telynor) | 71 comments Well, from 1603 to 1714, the Stuarts were Kings of England and Scotland, so it should work. Except for that brief blip with Cromwell.

message 12: by Laura (new)

Laura I'm stuck on books where a castle is prominent - any suggestions?

message 13: by Christine (new)

Christine (chrisarrow) There are several books about the Tower of London. Tales From the Tower: Secrets and Superstitions from a Glorious and Gory Past, which I just started is pretty good.

Rebecca, how about The Dragon Empress: Life and times of Tz'u-Hsi 1835-1908 Empress Dowager of China?

Pearl Buck wrote a fictional book about her too.

message 14: by Brett (new)

Brett I'm in the middle of Lionheart can it still count for #1? or do I need to start a whole new book?

message 15: by Lyn (Readinghearts), The mod of last resort/Mod #3 (new)

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) | 1550 comments Mod
If you started anytime in Jan it counts. You can also count it if you were not more than halfway through on Jan 1st.

message 16: by H (new)

H | 5 comments I'm still looking for a good book for the prince one. Any ideas?

message 17: by Kit (new)

Kit Prince of Wales: A Biography
Young Prince Philip: His Turbulent Early Life
Just two I found so far. There are several on Prince Philip and Charles.

Sharon Kay Penman has a trilogy about the Welsh Princes.

I loved Here Be Dragons. It's one of my all time favorite books. It's really good.

message 22: by Brett (new)

Brett Would Selene, the daughter of Cleopatra count as a princess?

message 23: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Huston (telynor) | 71 comments I think that Selene would count, she did eventually end up as a queen. I just love Penman's books, so well written, so well researched, so well plotted... Go for it, I say.

Brett wrote: "Would Selene, the daughter of Cleopatra count as a princess?"

Yes, Selene counts as a Princess, as long as she is a Princess for most of the book. For example, Stephanie Dray's book Lily of the Nile would work. I'm not sure about Song of the Nile as I think she was married and an African Queen in that one.

Kit Just finished, The Trial of Queen Caroline: The Scandalous Affair that Nearly Ended a Monarchy. It was interesting to say the least! Has anyone else read it. I was disappointed in the outcome. Didn't like the ending at all!

message 40: by Lyn (Readinghearts), The mod of last resort/Mod #3 (new)

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) | 1550 comments Mod
I will say yes, Nicola, as a good portion of the book takes place while she is in the Tower. It is a close one, though.

message 41: by Nicola (new)

Nicola (nicola1) | 33 comments Thanks Lyn :) I think I am sorted with my books for the challenge now - I just need to finish my A-Z challenge first!!

Could try Alison Weir's Queen Isabella: Treachery, Adultery, and Murder in Medieval England. It's non-fiction.

It can get really confusing, Gayle. If you are still having problems, let me know and I can try to walk you through it.

Gayle (gretarahikkainen) | 25 comments For the "set in Asia" task, I'm guessing you probably meant China or Japan. Well, I have a book Tiger Claws: A Novel of India by John Speed about Shivaji (circa 1627 or so) set in India. India is part of Asia, so if the mods are OK with it, I'd like to read this book for the task.

Then I just need to find one about a Prince, and I'm all set for the rest of the books.

Actually, I was thinking all of Asia, which includes Persia, India, etc., so that book fits right in Gayle. It sounds like a good one!
