message 1: by Annie (new)

Annie (atchanks) Would members of the group be interested in choosing a book and discussing it (maybe for the month of February or for the Lent)?

message 2: by Lynne (new)

Lynne | 17 comments Yes!

message 3: by Meg (new)

Meg (mkop359) | 10 comments Definitely interested here!

message 4: by Elise (new)

Elise (littlefloweronice) Yes, that would be nice.

message 5: by Thadeus (new)

Thadeus | 28 comments Any particular books you had in mind?

message 6: by Annie (new)

Annie (atchanks) As for book suggestions, I was hoping those interested could suggest a book and we can vote on which one. . .

message 7: by Dan (new)

Dan (dwestrick) | 20 comments sounds great! Agree with Bill on Pope Benedict books - they're so deep that I think discussing them together will help me. Maybe his two on Christ is a good start?

message 8: by Jamie (new)

Jamie (swingcorey) | 43 comments I'd be interested as well.

In the "Time Travel" Goodreads group, we take nominations for about a week (nominate only one book and each book only once; i.e., one that has not already been nominated; preferably of books still in print and readily available) and then a poll is put up for another week to determine the final selection.

I'd like to nominate Story of a Soul: The Autobiography of St. Therese of Lisieux.

As I see it, the list of nominations so far is as follows:

* Story of a Soul: The Autobiography of St. Therese of Lisieux
* Witness to Hope: The Biography of Pope John Paul II
* Jesus of Nazareth

(Sorry, Dan - Jesus of Nazareth, Part Two: Holy Week: From the Entrance into Jerusalem to the Resurrection is your 2nd nomination, so I can't include it. Besides, we should all read part 1 first - we know from Star Wars what a mistake it is to read/watch out of order. :-)

message 9: by Dan (new)

Dan (dwestrick) | 20 comments :) good call Jamie

message 10: by Annie (new)

Annie (atchanks) Thanks Jamie! This is how I have proceeded in other book clubs. Last call for book nominations and then I will set up a poll and we will be ready to group read by the first of the month.

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

I'd like to nominate The Screwtape Letters for our February/Lenten read.

message 12: by Cleo (new)

Cleo (cleopatra18) | 23 comments I love The Screwtape Letters!

I'd like to nominate:

On the Incarnation On the Incarnation by St. Athanasius of Alexandria by St. Athanasius of Alexandria

message 14: by Dan (new)

Dan (dwestrick) | 20 comments loving the recommendations. Hope we get this off the ground

Me, too!

message 16: by Annie (last edited Jan 26, 2012 02:14PM) (new)

Annie (atchanks) I haven't heard about the poll so we can vote one of two ways :

1. Leave a comment with the book you are voting for

or

2. Message me with the book you are voting for

Let's say that voting begins now and will go until 29 Jan 2012. Any book that has been nominated above is fair game and you only get one vote!

This will allow our group read with chosen book to begin 1 Feb 2012.

message 17: by Virginia (new)

Virginia | 10 comments I vote for the Screwtape Letters.

message 18: by Dan (new)

Dan (dwestrick) | 20 comments I vote "Story of a Soul"

message 19: by Jamie (new)

Jamie (swingcorey) | 43 comments I vote that someone (with poll creation privileges) creates a poll, so we can vote there.

Otherwise, count me as a 2nd vote for Story of a Soul by St. Thérèse de Lisieux.

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

And count me as a second vote for The Screwtape Letters.

message 21: by Meg (new)

message 25: by Virginia (new)

Virginia | 10 comments We have many months to read. We can choose one book, then go down the list.

message 26: by Cleo (new)

Cleo (cleopatra18) | 23 comments I was hoping for a poll but I guess I should give my nomination one little vote: On the Incarnation: On the Incarnation by St. Athanasius of Alexandria

Sorry -- I don't have poll privileges (I contacted Lisa but haven't heard anything). If this works for Feb., I will try to make sure we have a poll for March! :)

message 28: by Matthew (new)

Hello everyone.

Sorry I didn't put the poll up - no computer at home due to some folks deciding to break in and steal it (boo!). Hope you all have a fruitful read. Be sure to choose a good, solid, faithful Catholic book!

message 30: by Jamie (new)

Jamie (swingcorey) | 43 comments Virginia wrote: "We have many months to read..."

...but not much time to decide on one book for this month (and have time to get a copy from the library or book store).

message 31: by Cleo (new)

Cleo (cleopatra18) | 23 comments Don't worry, Annie & Lisa ........ It works this way too! :-)

Sorry to hear about your break-in Lisa. Hope you get everything worked out soon! :-)

message 32: by Annie (new)

Annie (atchanks) It looks like The Screwtape Letters. Ready to begin?

message 33: by Carina (new)

Carina (beloved121) | 43 comments Wish I could read this book along with you guys. If I had access to a free copy I would join in. I already have too many books on my kindle so won't be buying anything new anytime soon. Will check in to see how the discussion is going. C.S. Lewis is great!

You can get a paper version from the library...

message 35: by Cleo (new)

Cleo (cleopatra18) | 23 comments Is an new thread going to be started for The Screwtape Letters, or do we just comment on this one?

Thanks for the tip Jamie, but I live on an island and chances are our tiny library will not have that book. If it's God's will, I'm sure that book will fall into my hands. Until then, have tons more to keep me busy for now :)

Annie (atchanks) Cleo wrote: "Is an new thread going to be started for The Screwtape Letters, or do we just comment on this one?"

I started a new one!

message 38: by Carina (new)

Carina (beloved121) | 43 comments If anyone is interested in an online copy of the book, here it is -

http://members.fortunecity.com/phanto...

There is an annoying pop-up on the right side when you open the page, just go straight to the top of the page and click the X to close it.

I was just wondering if there's an online copy and I saw your link. Thank you so much Carina!

It's the 2nd week into February now. I hope I can finish it in time for the discussion.

Annie (atchanks) I am juggling a lot of books but I am really enjoying The Screwtape letters. The wit and insight make it such a memorable read!
