I know a lot of the second type but I can't think about the first type.

Bitten also, although the romance aspect sometimes (often) takes a backseat.
Several of the IAD books have a very "forward" hero, reluctant heroine. The series starts with A Hunger Like No Other.
I'll have to think on it to come up with some historicals that would fit.



The Notorious Rake (one of my favourite redemption stories also)
Not Quite a Husband (pretty good on the angst scale also)
Libby's London Merchant (very non-steamy, but really sweet)



In my experience, romance written by men is usually painful and tortured. LOL.

LOL... note I said "good" romance books. :-)

Jude Morgan writes some excellent Jane Austen-ish Regencies.
