Tina (fringetina44) | 3 comments If you were to write a vampire novel or series, which characteristics would you choose for your vampires? Heroes. Villans. Sunlight, or no. Drink blood from humans or only other vampires. Eat food. Supernatural powers or just stronger and faster. Born a vampire or converted, and if so, how. A disease, virus. You get the idea. There are so many books out there with so many different ideas. Which do you like most?

Clara (tarmarq) | 1 comments I am currently in the process writing a vampire story. I would like to do a series with the vampires as heroes and villains. I would also have to drink blood from different sources, some with more powers than others, be able to walk in daylight, born and converted, and I am still thinking about whether I would want them to eat food or just able to tolerate small amounts of food.

message 3: by Tina (new)

Tina (fringetina44) | 3 comments It really is very complex. I think about it often. so many decisions. Good Luck.

message 4: by Scott (new)

Scott Baker | 7 comments In my vampire trilogy (The Vampire Hunters, available on Amazon), the vampires were pure evil and treated humans like they were blood cattle. They preyed on their victims sexually and for food. And while I made my vampires vulnerable to sunlight and holy water, I did not follow the rules pertaining weaknesses (such as being vulnerable to religious symbols, not being able to cross bodies of running water or enter homes without permission, etc.)

wolf spirit | 22 comments I am writting a vampire book. These vampires want peace between the humans. That is all I have...it is just an idea, but there are so many choices that I want to make with my vampire story.

Michael Keyton (mikekeyton) | 1 comments I am writting a vampire book. These vampires want peace between the humans. That is all I have...it is just an idea, but there are so many choices that I want to make with my vampire story.

On the basis that it's often good to see a character 'grow', I'd suggest a dark, tragic growth that makes the reader's hand clench at its relentlessness. IE have the peace-nik vampire become steadily more corrupt until he becomes the worst of the worse

message 10: by Debbie (new)

Debbie Davies (debbie16) | 2 comments i like the traditional traits in vampires i.e. i don't want them to sparkle! I would have them drink blood, be super fast and strong, able to compel people and unable to step on holy ground.

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello, I'm new. I'm Jezebel and this is what I'm currently writing about.

The traditional vamps. Combust in sunlight, can't step on holy ground, nor touch holy water or crosses, can't enter a place without permission and they all have a different power :)

message 12: by N.L. Dufour (new)

N.L. Dufour (nldufour) | 2 comments I'm writing my first novel about vampires. Ive decided to make him good ie. He resents being turned and tries hard fit in with humans. He only drinks from women and uses persuasion to erase there minds of the experience. He can go out in the sunlight for a small amount of time but never direct light. The sunlight burns and stings his skin and after an hour it starts to bubble. More than half a day will make him slowly melt and burn until he turns to ash. Being in the sunlight is torture for him and stays out during the night time. He is super strong, enhanced hearing and sight, and faster. He still believes in his faith so holy water and grounds are not effective unless the vampire is evil. Simple stake through the heart or beheading will kill him. I haven't really thought about if he can only enter homes with permission or not... not sure if that would effect my story line. He does fall in love with a human but she isn't special. Ie. Cant resist his charms or have magic blood that drives him wild. He tries so hard to be human that he falls in love with her because of her slinky personality. He has more of an internal struggle with the man who loves her and the beast who wants to drink her dry. Oh... almost forgot, he was changed when on his death bed by another vampire. He drank him nearly dry then fed him his blood for the change to happen.

With all that said... any suggestions? This is my first book so I need all the input I can get.

Also ... should I include other powers and paranormals? I was almost thinking of making her have dormant powers that she would discover but then I didn't know if that would be too much. I also didn't know if I should make it just a book or make it lead off for a sequel or trilogy?

message 14: by Pandora (new)

Pandora Richardson (pandorar) | 2 comments I'm currently writing a Vampire/Sci-Fi mashup about an ancient Vampire who mysteriously awakens in the future with amnesia. My "rules" are similar to Anne Rice's with the exception that they do have the ability to have sex :) I'm probably going to be creative with the daylight thing in the sense that the more powerful you are the more likely you can stomach the sun and my vampires, like Rice's will not be easy to kill at all. They are going to be old school. Nothing short of complete destruction of the body will suffice. They will have powers, but I think I'm going to limit them to things we "hope" humans could potentially do, i.e. telepathy, telekinesis, psychic ability, along with the usual strength and heighted senses. No shapeshifting or anything like that. Virus makes more sense to me as well.

message 15: by Sylvie (last edited May 11, 2012 04:13PM) (new)

Sylvie If I were to write a vampire novel, first off, I wouldn't make him a killer. Oh, he'd be capable of killing, and willing to do so to protect himself and those he cares about, but he wouldn't need to kill to feed.

Also, he'd have to be smart enough to be able to adapt to changing times and to blend in. There's just no excuse for a stupid vampire!

Religious objects like crosses and holy water would have no effect on him. Neither would garlic. Still, he wouldn't be invulnerable or invincible. Nothing's more boring to a reader (IMO) than a vampire who can't be killed. So, he would be harder to kill than your average human, but burning, beheading, dismembering (ewww!) would do the deed.

Not sure about details such as mirror reflections, sunlight, what else he could consume besides blood (if anything).

B.C. (sirrom) | 4 comments "a creature bound by darkness, strong, lethal and impulsive" - Alder, Chaos Children

I write about vampires that were once human. Some are heartless monsters. Others struggle with their own questionable humanity. They hunt. They fight. They are unique and vulnerable as any of us.

message 36: by Christal (new)

Christal | 2 comments I'm taking a different approach to writing about vampires. With the story I have started the main character is not even a vampire but one of the humans. He rises thru the ranks from Food to boytoy to general. The story is revolving around what happens to him and will reveal good and not so good vampires.

message 38: by Ardy (new)

Ardy Ardy (ardybooks) | 52 comments I recently posted my new novel Akeldama: The Field of Blood on smashwords.com My Vampires are pure evil, but they're not stupid. They are highly organized and actually start a war that conquers the world. The most evil Vampires in my book (first of a series) are Dante, known as the Dark Messiah, Vladimir, a vampire with an unquenchable thirst that makes him very powerful and very evil, and a Dwarf, who is one of the creepiest characters I have ever written. I think vampires should hold true to the legends. They are evil bloodsuckers and they should remain evil bloodsuckers. Check out my book to see what I mean.

message 39: by Matthew (new)

Matthew Ryan (matthewdryan) | 12 comments In my dark fantasy novel, "Drasmyr," the vampires are pretty much traditional Dracula-type vampires: they are evil, and ruthless. The abilities and weaknesses are pretty much the same as in Dracula with but a few minor tweaks. The master vampire, being 1000 years old, is resistant to the sun, but the lesser vampires are not. They are still affected by holy objects and holy water, but it is a fantasy world with multiple gods and a greater variety of religions, so it is a little more complicated.

message 40: by Evangeline (new)

Evangeline Ravencraft (evangelineravencraft) | 3 comments I just published my story FALLEN and it is really more of a Gothic Novel than anything, though it is full of vampires! Because I wanted that Gothic feel I stuck to the true Romanian Lore, there is nothing in the book that is not something originally believed. It gave me so much to work with, especially since originally they were considered to be sort of witches, which is where the idea that they can read minds, control people and animals comes from.

Jeff Dawson | 63 comments Are you ready for vampires to regain their standing in the genre? Are you ready for them to stop "sparkling" and take on a worthy opponent? Then wait no longer. This book will satisfy even the most "bloody thirsty" appetites with an added twist; one of the clans is able to release a very nasty bacteria into their respective hosts which after ninety days or so unleashes a very ghoulish end to the recipients.

The Third Reich has Occupied Poland. The plan of "relocating" the population is well underway with one problem the Germans could have never imagined. They unknowingly are removing the food supply of the Romanov and Boirarsky vampire clans. Needless to say, they do not care for each other at all. Too much bad blood has been spilled over the past centuries. Will they be able to unite and take on the true enemy; the Third Reich, or will they perish as the food supply quickly diminishes?

Get a copy today and find out if the Romanov and Boirarsky clans will succeed in uniting and dealing the Third Reich their first of many defeats.

message 46: by Ross (new)

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) | 38 comments I've been working on a story involving vampires lately, well it's more of a role play rather than an actual novel, but the idea was that the Vampires were polar opposites to another race.

With the prevalence of vampires and werewolves in conventional horror and supernatural fiction, I centred my idea on Mummies, or Solari as I call them. And this brings the ideas of Vampires in Egypt, only they aren't called vampires, but Necron, which I derived from the Greek Nekros and eikon which together means 'dead looking' or corpse-like.

In this version the Solari are the daylight guardians of the Necron (yes inspired by Underworld) and as such are the physical warriors. The Necron on the other hand are as strong as the average human, but it is in their mind where their power lies, having powerful telepathic abilities and cast illusions, hence all the shapeshifting they do, is just them plying with the minds of humans, making them see things and attributing terrible and awe-inspiring powers to them.
In short, Necrons manipulate others into doing their work for them but are no great shakes in a physical confrontation.
