As far as I know for the first half of the year, we should expect following book adaptations:
* The Woman In Black (Movie Tie In Edition) A Ghost Story by Susan Hill by Susan Hill (the link to the movie is here)
* A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs by Edgar Rice Burroughs called John Carter
* The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1) by Suzanne Collins by Suzanne Collins (the link to the movie is here)
* Complete Stories and Poems by Edgar Allan Poe by Edgar Allan Poe (the movie actually uses the author's stories and poems to invent the last days of his life -- I'm really thrilled to see this!)
* A Clash Of Kings (A Song of Ice and Fire, #2) by George R.R. Martin by George R.R. Martin (no need to say much about the 2nd season of this brilliant series)
* Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami by Haruki Murakami (the movie is actually from the year 2010, but went to US cinemas just this month and I didn't notice it before)
* Coriolanus by William Shakespeare by William Shakespeare (I expect a lot from this adaptation)
* The Flowers Of War by Geling Yan by Geling Yan (I would love to see Christian Bale in this, but I'm not sure is it so easily manageable to get a book).

That would be all for now. The list can already make really fine March-April poll for the SPOTLIGHTED READS. If you are aware of any other movies, please don't hesitate, I am sure we would all love to know about them!

Yes The Great Gatsby would definitely be great read! I think the movie comes out at the end of the year - just in time to make the company to The Hobbit :-) I've already read Hobbit, but it would be nice to read it again before the film. Gatsby will definitely be included in the polls for the second half of the year :-)

message 5: by Dahlia (new)

Dahlia I'm looking forward to The Hobbit and A Clash of Kings. :)

I just saw the 1-minute trailer for the season two of Game of Thrones - now I'm really proud of Dubrovnik and also feel terribly desperate need to start reading the book right now :-)

Tazitazitazi | 10 comments Maybe this is not the right thread for this and it’s not directly about books, but … I would like to introduce a film festival I’ve been attending for the last 4 years.
Far East Film fFstival takes place in Udine (Italy) and presents popular films from Far East: Japan, China, Thailand, Korea, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Indonesia, Taiwan... Wednesday is traditionally a horror day, but on other days you can see all genres. There are also some retrospectives in the morning hours and a lot of following programs (panels, exhibitions…) all day long.
If you are close to Udine you can hop there for one day or like me take a few day of work and spend them in the dark of the movie theatre. For the later, I suggest buying accreditation for all movie screenings (30-50 euros, depending on the day of purchase). And there are some nice and not so expensive accommodations near bay.

message 8: by Katalili (new)

Katalili | 3 comments Udine is pretty near, 3 hours cca from pula.

Zeljka (ztook) | 3005 comments Mod
Interesting festival, would be nice to attend. It's possible till 26th February to buy online all-inclusive (meaning all the screenings) accreditation for mere 30 Euros - really cheap! And the 14th Festival starts on 20th April, so you may have enough time to plan your trip.
I guess you have already purchased your accreditation, Tazi :-) Really great, now I am tempted to attend it too...

message 10: by Tazitazitazi (last edited Feb 14, 2012 09:31AM) (new)

Tazitazitazi | 10 comments There is a little catch. ;) You don’t have to BUY the accreditation till February 26th, you just have to MAKE THE RESERVATION for it. That gives you the time to change your mind. Just send them the cancellations e-mail if you do, so that they don't change this liberal accreditation policy. We always pay it in cash when we came to Udine.

That's good advice! Who knows what might happen till April. Although I like to obligate myself with the firm purchase - so to not give myself an option to change my mind :-D

Another cool movie which book would be fun to read is going to be released in June this year:
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter(2012)

I do not expect much, probably it would be more like horrid Van Helsing, but it's at least made from a book - Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter by Seth Grahame-Smith . That can't be so bad, if book has good rates... right?

Coming in June, for Twilight / Pattinson fans something very wickedly different...

Bel-Ami -- a faithfull adaptation of classic Guy de Maupassant's Bel ami by Guy de Maupassant .

Some cool movies based on the books are getting wide release till the end of this year:

La nouvelle guerre des boutons, based on La Guerre des boutons by Louis Pergaud by Louis Pergaud

Total Recall, based on We Can Remember It for You Wholesale by Philip K. Dick by Philip K. Dick

The Bourne Legacy, based on The Bourne Legacy (Jason Bourne #4) by Eric Van Lustbader by Eric Van Lustbader (I guess - it might only be inspired by Robert Ludlum's Jason Bourne)

Cosmopolis, based on Cosmopolis by Don DeLillo by Don DeLillo

The Great Gatsby, based on The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald by F. Scott Fitzgerald

and of course,

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, based on the first part of The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien by J.R.R. Tolkien.

This movie has already hit some countries, mine not yet, and it seems not US either although is already well advertised:

..
On the Road, based on On the Road by Jack Kerouac by Jack Kerouac

Er... Got reminded of one movie I've already mentioned in one thread, but obviously not here. How on Earth could I skip it? Although release dates vary, most countries would see it till the end of the year:

.

Anna Karenina, based on Leo Tolstoy's classic story of love, adultery and betrayal... To be honest, as I know the story by heart (read it four times) and love much more clumsy romance between Levin and Kitty, and as there are already many adaptations of the book (of which I blushingly admit I have seen none, but want to, one day), I am not sure was this new one necessary. But all right. Joe Wright is directing this one. And Vronsky isn't Pattinson, thank goodness.

There's another interesting adaptation you've all probably already heard of, but the date of release isn't yet so certain. It's still planned for December 2012.

Les Misérables (2012), a musical drama based on Victor Hugo's classic.

Same might apply (not classic, but the date of release) for Jack Reacher (2012), coming out supposedly right before Christmas this year. It's based on Lee Child's novel One Shot.

The poster is not quite innovative though, but there's still time for improvements. If they're planned.

Shame on me - I didn't know that following two movies are going to be released this year, not until Dispatches's post here. Thank you! Those are the movies I was looking forward to when I heard about the start of the production, but completely forgot about them later. Really, shame on me, and great thanks to Dispatches!

Here are they:

Cloud Atlas, based on the novel, of course of the same name, Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell by David Mitchell, comes in the US cinemas in October 2012.

Life of Pi, based on the novel of the same name, Life of Pi by Yann Martel by Yann Martel, comes in the US cinemas in November 2012.

message 20: by Trudie (new)

Trudie (trudieb) Hey no worries - I just happened to come across them and they also happened to be some of my favorite novels. Which is a double edged sword because you always end up with massive expectations. Cloudatlas in particular could be extremely tough to pull off.

Coming in November this year...

Great Expectations, with magnificent cast and crew - from director Mike Newell and screenwriter David Nicholls to great British actors Helena Bonham Carter, Ralph Fienness, Jason Flemyng and Robbie Coltrane :)

message 22: by Alana (new)

Alana (alanasbooks) | 730 comments That should be very interesting! I'm afraid I won't dive into Great Expectations before that comes out, however. I've read Anna Karenina and am halfway through Atlas Shrugged for my long novels this year. I'm not sure I'm ready to start any Dickens for a few months! But I will look forward to seeing it eventually.

To be honest, I was surprised seeing they are making another version of the novel, not even a year after releasing the TV series. That is a kind of overload for me ;) And really odd decision, I mean, both adaptations are partially financed by BBC.

Very anxious to see Cloud Atlas. I saw the trailer before I knew about the movie though! I am so far behind. I just posted the trailer to facebook. It looks fantastic! Have any of you read the book?

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

Also, I wish they were doing Les Miserables as a non-musical.

I haven't read the book yet, and I wanted to, but somehow missed the opportunity. Now it is in the cinemas. Although I can wait, in order to read the book first, I agree, it looks so amazing on the large screen!

But, if somebody wishes to read and discuss the book with the movie regardless our monthly reads, why not - a topic can be opened in Spotlighted Reads :)

Eh we can't have everything :) I admit, it is a bit odd, but sounds interesting. Especially if you know that Hugh Jackman (codeword: Oklahoma!) and Anne Hathaway have amazing voices :)

Although I like musicals I was shocked seeing the trailer for the first time 'cause I thought it would be a book adaptation and not a musical adaptation.
But my fangirling heart is eager to see Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman and Eddie Redmayne sing :D

If you think of Hobbit, on December 14th -- but if you think of Les Miserables on Christmas ;)

Surprisingly, but I've just found out, Anna Karenina is already in distribution - in Ireland and UK -- where are our UK and Irish members now to tell us more ;) Maybe that's limited one, though. Other countries such as some European and USA, will have to wait a bit more...

As the poster says, it comes out on Boxing Day, meaning December 21st.

I never read The Hobbit, so maybe someone else can answer my question.

Does this 300+ pages book really have enough subject matter for THREE movies?
