'British novelist Salman Rushdie (pictured) cancels an appearance at the Jaipur Literature Festival in India, and four other writers leave the city after reading excerpts from The Satanic Verses, which is banned in the country.' I believe Ali mentions these books, or it could have been Jan Goodwin: The Price of Honour. Both books shocking but true.

Julia Yes, she is often compared to Rushdie and did mention him in her book.

Russell Traughber Shocking but also true is Jabonkah's Liberian, childhood memoir, DRIVING THE BIRDS. Jabonkah is a bush girl of the Gola tribe when is sent to the society bush and cut like Ali but told it a fresh way.
