There have been a number of requests for us to choose our books for the group read two or three months in advance. I'm more than willing to give this a try. The only reservation I have is that we keep December free in case we want to read something from the new Laureate shortly after she/he is announced.

So let's have your nominations for the next group reads. The top two in the poll will be selectd for the March and April group reads.

Please remember that by nominating a title you are committing yourself to leading the discussion on that book if it is selected.

Angus (angusmiranda) I'd like to nominate Elfriede Jelinek's The Piano Teacher and Orhan Pamuk's My Name is Red. Let's keep the nominations coming!

Megan: We can do this! :)

The group read Pamuk's My Name is Red about six months ago.

Angus (angusmiranda) Oops, sorry. I didn't look at the archives thoroughly.

message 5: by Abby (new)

Abby I will not have time to moderate a discussion in March, but would like to nominate a few books for April. After reading Naipaul's comments about female authors, I feel compelled to read more. Hence, my nominations for April (David, please let me know if the group has read these - my searching revealed mixed conclusions - thanks!):

Jerusalen by Selma Lagerlof

Reeds in the Wind by Grazia Deledda

Sport Of Nature by Nadine Gordimer

No, none of these have been selected as a group read since we started reading as a group. I think all three are excellent choices, however I must ask that we restrict ourselves to one nomination per month per member. Therefore I would ask you to nominate one title for March and one title for April. This doesn't of course, preclude someone else nominating one or other of your titles for either month.

message 7: by Abby (new)

Abby Ah, David, so sorry about the triple nomination. Since the Gordimer book has received a second nomination, I choose it as my official nomination for April.

message 8: by Amber (new)

Amber Berry | 1 comments I'm very new here and haven't read anything for this group yet. With that, I'd like to second Heinrich Böll's The Safety Net for either month.

Ok, thanks for your nominations. Trying to make sense of them I have created a poll for the March read which will close on Friday next, 24th February between The Safety Net by Heinrich Boll and The Piano Teacher by Elfriede Jelinek.

I am hoping that we will have finished Fatelessness by Sunday March 4th and that will allow us to start the March group read from Monday, March 5th.

For some reason that I find impossible to fathom, our current poll has been placed as poll #12 in the list of polls. Sorry about that. I'll try to sort it out. For those of you who have not taken part in a poll before, you click on the word 'polls' in the menu on the top right hand side of our group home page.

John | 3 comments Either book would be fine with me, though as a poll is made of deciders, I'll go for THE SAFETY NET (The Essential Heinrich Boll"

It appears that the reason the poll is showing up as #12 is becasue you forget to check the feature poll option.

Yet I distinctly remember checking that option.

Hmm that is odd, myabe it is just a glitch on Goodreads. But I would double check to make sure that it is selected, maybe it got unchcked somehow. Goodreads can be buggy at times.

OK, The Piano Teacher has been selected for our next group read to start on Monday, 5th March. I noticed that it was originally nominated by Angus, however since he is leading our discussion on our current group read, perhaps one of the seconders would like to lead the discussion of The Piano Teacher to give Angus time to recharge his batteries?

message 16: by Angus (new)

Angus (angusmiranda) Hi, thanks for the recharging time. If there are no takers for The Piano Teacher, I don't really mind. I have to take responsibility for my nomination. But it would be nice if someone would like to take over so that the discussion leaders rotate among the members.

Are there any further nominations for our April group read?

To date we definitely have Sport of Nature by Nadine Gordimer, and possibly Jerusalen by Selma Lagerlof and Reeds in the Wind by Grazia Deledda.

Nominations will close on Friday next and the poll will be available shortly afterwards.

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

Only 9 votes cast so far. The poll for our April group read will close on Friday. If you haven't already cast your vote, please do so at your earliest convenience.

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

I assume that group members have done with Sport of Nature and if we are to keep the group going we need to select a book to read in July. So please, can we have your nominations for a group read for July?

message 20: by Angus (new)

Angus (angusmiranda) I'd like to nominate One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Alexander Solzhenitsyn. It's a slim book, so I hope this can be accommodated by most members in their reading lists.

message 21: by Beth (new)

Beth (eparks4232) | 21 comments I'd like to nominate The Golden Notebook: Perennial Classics edition by Doris Lessing. Unfortunately not short. Fortunately, available on audio as well, and wonderful, at least as far as I've gotten to date.
