This is the place if you plan to read 12 books from your TBR pile/s. Sign up with a discussion entry below.

message 2: by Wanda (new)

Wanda (wanda514) Here is the spot for me. Between work and parenthood, a low number will eliminate self-defeat. Now to compile a list.

message 3: by Geevee (new)

Geevee This is for me too - no undue pressure. Work, family and some other stuff spreads my time thinly but a challenge is a challenge is a challenge.

NB: Have read 2 already and its Feb so I guess I'm still on track and not falling behind just yet!

Welcome, Geevee! And, yes, two down towards twelve is a great start!

message 5: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (hannahr) Since I've already got a personal reading challenge in place, 12 should work great for me.

Thanks for the inventive challege, Bev.

Glad to help!

Jo Ann (packerbackerhere) | 55 comments is there an ant hill reading group? between working third shift & sleeping during the day leaves little time for feet up time(when i do my reading & crocheting) besides other things have have to be down around the house...what would be the name of the "ant hill"? and can we discuss the books we read? etc...

I don't mean to be difficult, but I haven't put this together as a general "book discussion" page--it's a challenge, aimed at making us stretch ourselves a bit to meet goals. I chose the mountain theme on purpose--it's deliberately aimed at anyone who has mountains of TBR books that they want to get taken care of and meant to give them incentive to tackle them. And twelve books isn't all that much for a challenge. One book per month.

If we wind up discussing the books, then that's a bonus (and certainly welcome)--but not the point of what I've proposed. There are lots of discussion postings where you can just discuss the books you're able to read at whatever pace you'd like. Or if there isn't one that suits your tastes, then you always have the option of setting up a discussion group of your own.

message 9: by Darkpool (last edited Feb 13, 2012 12:10AM) (new)

Darkpool I'm going for 12 to start with, as I have a couple of chunky volumes I want to read, and don't want to find myself focusing on the short books just to ensure I meet the goal. Depending on how I go I may upgrade. I've already read two.
Not a blogger, so I guess I'll open myself a thread in this folder.

message 10: by Yvonne (new)

Yvonne (yvonne473) | 6 comments I'm going with level one for now. I will also post on my blog.

message 11: by Kim (new)

Kim (kimmr) I'll start with 12 as well. My TBR pile of books I already own is not very long when compared to the list of books I plan to read but don't yet own!

Bev | 214 comments Mod
There's a whole 'nother challenge out there for "Wishlist" TBRs--books you want to read but don' own. I (being something of a challenge addict) have signed up for that one too....Here's the info if anybody's interested: http://leeswammes.wordpress.com/2011/...

So I was about to compile my list and realised I've read four so far from my "owned" TBR so I will move to Mt.Vancouver so I push myself - of course I may fail if I select some weighty tomes, so farewell for now Pike's Peak although I may come back to you one day if I fall from Mt. Vancouver :)

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

I'll start here, too. I'm going to make a list of twelve to be sure I stick to it, rather than leave it open-ended. If I'm lucky, some of my discussion groups will pick books I own, too, and I'll scale a little higher!

message 15: by Irene (new)

Irene Palfy | 1 comments Hey.. I think I will sign in for this number of books, too.. Won't take any risks.. Last year I had an "awful non-reading periode".. ;") Though my book shelves say: "Come on! There is a lot more stored in us than just 12 lousy books.." Have fun everyone!!

message 16: by Dawn (& Ron) (new)

Dawn (& Ron) (furryreaders) | 456 comments I'm signing up for the Pike's Peak challenge, any dent in the TBR pile is a bonus. This will just be Dawn for now, maybe Ron will decide to participate later.

Thanks Laura for the invite! I already see many friends here and fellow Bibbers. Maybe we can turn some of these into buddy reads too!

Hi, Dawn & Ron! Welcome to the challenge and have fun climbing Pike's Peak!

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome Dawn! Nice to have you here. :)

message 19: by Dawn (& Ron) (new)

Dawn (& Ron) (furryreaders) | 456 comments Thanks, I'm looking forward to it. This will be my first ever challenge, not counting the Goodreads total books read thing.

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Dawn (and four footed friends), welcome!

Hannah (hannahr) Dawn (& Ron) wrote: "I'm signing up for the Pike's Peak challenge, any dent in the TBR pile is a bonus. This will just be Dawn for now, maybe Ron will decide to participate later..."

Hey Dawn! Tickle my buddy Spatz for me.
Sorry to hear about the cat barf laptop :(

message 22: by Dawn (& Ron) (new)

Dawn (& Ron) (furryreaders) | 456 comments Hayes, the four footed kids appreciate the welcome (they've developed a little following on GR).

Hey HannahJ, Spats just received your request and thanks you very much. Can you believe it right on top of and into the laptop? She couldn't have centered it any better (rolls eyes)!

message 23: by Misfit (new)

Misfit | 198 comments Oh gawd. I know cats will barf when and where, but seriously? The laptop?

message 24: by Dawn (& Ron) (new)

Dawn (& Ron) (furryreaders) | 456 comments Misfit, exactly, after I got over being angry and dumbfounded, I just had to laugh about it. We figured it was her way of commenting that some of her cat siblings were getting way too much attention, in her opinion. Here is the guilty party and full story, what a mess, oh and check out what we call her yoga pose. As another kitty mom, I would love to know if you've ever seen that before. http://www.goodreads.com/user_status/...

message 25: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina (tonyashall) I signed up for something didn't I. In any event, I plan to tackle Pike's Peak.

message 26: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome aboard, Sabrina! :)

message 27: by Bev (new)

Bev | 214 comments Mod
Welcome, Sabrina! good luck with your climb.

message 28: by Dawn (& Ron) (new)

Dawn (& Ron) (furryreaders) | 456 comments Sabrina, happy to see you here! Maybe our next read could also be a part of this challenge.

Jeannette, the titles we spoke of before would work towards this challenge for me, how about you? The 4th Stephanie Barron's book and Matsuoka's Autumn Bridge I've already set aside for later.

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

I own Autumn Bridge (excellent book), but I've read it, and I don't own the Barron books. And, I've read #4. :( I'll watch your list, and I can always do a separate buddy-read that won't count for my challenge, but can still count for you.

message 30: by MichelleCH (new)

MichelleCH (lalatina) Starting with Pike's Peak!

Go, MichelleCH, go!

message 33: by MichelleCH (new)

MichelleCH (lalatina) Thank you all for the encouragement and support!

Misfit | 198 comments MichelleCH wrote: "Thank you all for the encouragement and support!"

Best of luck, but watch out for Laura, she's already tried to convince me to get a book out of the library instead of working on my existing pile. :D

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

But, you resisted! (I'm sure.)

Misfit | 198 comments Jeannette wrote: "But, you resisted! (I'm sure.)"

I did resist the library book. I did not receive the two ARCs I got from Vine, nor one offered by the publisher

*hangs head in shame*

message 37: by [deleted user] (new)

You're all right. :) I'm still watching for those Kindle freebies, and getting books from the library. On the flip side, you are making me drool in anticipation of the next FOL sale at my local library. I may have to go bargain hunting....

message 38: by Misfit (new)

Misfit | 198 comments Really, you never know what you will find.

message 39: by [deleted user] (new)

I mentioned it somewhere earlier, but our library is going to be remodeling/expanding, so they will be moving to a temporary space soon. Part of the move involves culling of older titles that haven't been checked out recently. (I know most of the librarians, and the one woman tipped me off to this.) So, I might just pay the extra $5 to get in early. The hardest thing is actually sifting through all the books. Not only are there rooms full of tables, but there are boxes of books under the tables, too. I'll do my best, and not think about the treasures that get away.

message 40: by Misfit (new)

Misfit | 198 comments You might start culling a list of possible authors to watch out for. Dorothy Eden shows up a lot here, and while not "great" she's a solid reliable author and keeps her topics varied. MM Kay usually pops up, plus Susan Howatch.

message 41: by [deleted user] (new)

I'll have to go through my tbr list. Unfortunately, the sales are usually such a jumble. I did get a Josephine Tey at the last sale, and a good chunk of a manga series I want to read. I also got a Japanese textbook for $1.

message 42: by Misfit (new)

Misfit | 198 comments I'm a cover slut, and those are what will draw me to an unknown book.

message 43: by [deleted user] (last edited Mar 18, 2012 07:36PM) (new)

You do have some interesting covers on your shelves. I get pulled in the same way when I look for manga.

I bought this one for the cover art

Dawn of the Arcana, Vol. 1 (Dawn of the Arcana, #1) by Rei Toma

message 44: by Margaret (new)

Margaret | 173 comments Hi all. I have debated between this one and Mt. Vancouver and in the end I decided to start small and work my way up. Like I said in the main intro I am in the process of cataloging every single book I own right here on GR and will be adding to my Own-And-Someday-Read shelf daily. I don't know about you guys but my To-Read shelf is really my "wish list". I don't own a single one of those, but I want to. LOL!

I have an idea for how I would like to go about taking on this challenge, kind of make things a little more interesting but I'd like to know what you guys think of it before I go flying off half cocked with my independent reading challenge thread...

Here's my idea: Everyone/anyone has an invitation to look at my (ever growing) Own-And-Someday-Read shelf and *you* tell *me* what book you think I should read next and if you'd like, but *only* if you want me to, I will return the favor and tell you which book from your TBR&owned shelf I think you should read next. I would be tickled to death if I could read my 12 or more books that way. Talk about a potentially well rounded experience based on other people's tastes and ideas!

So, I guess what I'm saying is, would anyone be interested in that?

message 45: by [deleted user] (new)

I did something similar on another thread last year. I'll gladly make a recommendation from your shelf. I don't have any shelved that way, but feel free to pick something from my tbr shelf, too.

message 46: by [deleted user] (new)

FYI Margaret: We are doing a group buddy-read of A Tale of Two Cities this summer, if you'd like to join us.

message 47: by Kim (new)

Kim (kimmr) I'm also happy to pick something from your shelf, Margaret. However, like Jeannette, I don't have anything shelved in that way. My TBR shelf is mostly books I own, but they're not separated out into pre and post 2012 purchases. Most of the books I intend to read as part of this challenge are in fact not on my GR shelves at all, but are books sitting around on my bookshelves at home which I haven't got around to reading yet. I don't have the dedication to catelogue the books I own. It would be too much work and I'm too lazy to make the attempt!

message 48: by Margaret (new)

Margaret | 173 comments First, hey I love Charlie! And what do you know? That's yet another book I own that I never got around to reading...I wonder who else can say exactly the same thing? Haha! Count me in for A Tale of Two Cities.

Jeannette and Kim: Yay! I am now off to make my independent Pike's Peak post. So come order me around on what to read soon, please. :) And then I will pick something for you, since you both seem up for it.

message 49: by [deleted user] (new)

I saw ToTC on your shelf last night. It will be my first Dickens novel.

message 50: by Margaret (new)

Margaret | 173 comments My first Dickens should have been Oliver Twist but I was a slacker's slacker in high school, especially when I was told what to read - so I didn't read it. Years later my first Dickens book was Great Expectations which I thought was a little convoluted going in but it turned out that by the end everything was connected. Oh and Miss Havisham was ridiculously hilarious! Then I read 3 of his 5 Christmas books: A Christmas Carol (beautiful!), Cricket on the Hearth (good until you get to the anti-climatic end and the obvious Ebenezer Scrooge character under a different name has a complete change of heart, attitude, etc without warning or build up) and The Haunted Man And The Ghost's Bargain (that was a fabulous read that also makes you contemplate the importance/hindrance that bad memories have on our basic character). Sadly, these are the only Dickens novels I've read but it was enough for me to fall in love with him and especially his humor. Where Victorian novelists are concerned Dickens had the best sense of humor if you ask me.
