I dont recall how i found you. but i am now reading "running with scissors" and "Memoirs of a muse" that lara vapnyar is magic she has all the pros of a russian writer and yet so few of the cons.

I've looked at the descriptions of the books you've mentioned. It's so much fun to explore.

Does Lara Vapnyar write in English or is the book a translation from Russian?

She lives in the the states now, i believe she writes in english, but there is a huge difference in the writing, for example Cathedral by the sea by Ildefonso Falcones was a huge hit in spanish however it not really translate well, in my opinion, but when the original writer translates for example Nabokov then it is almost as if it was written in english, another exception is when the writer and transltor work together, i read a book recently i forgot the title, it was about a teacher who thought he was dying so he sought out an old lover, it was more of a novella but the translator and the frenc writer had worked together many times so they understood each other, and i thought it was agreat book.

Moishy, you make a good point about the quality of translations.

Think of the modern translations of the Bible to the vernacular. It loses so much literary value.
