Young Adult Book Reading Challenges discussion

Music is an intrinsic part of the story between Nick & Norah.

A friend commented to me that while he was reading the book he experienced a weird craving to listen to some of the songs they mentioned, but in particular songs that they mentioned which only exist within the context of the book! Boy, was he disappointed when Googling "Where's Fluffy" only came up with the viral campaign to promote the N&NIP movie.

Are there songs from the book and/or movie which particularly appealed to you?

Did any of you "discover" a new artist or song through the book?

What role does music play in N&N's relationship--really, in any teen relationship or romantic association?

I have to say that I don't know most of the artists / songs in the book (not my kind of music, I guess) however the thing that most impressed me most is actually the 1st chapter when it describes Nick's thoughts / feelings whilst he's playing (my husband is a basist and he's been telling me that sort of stuff so it's good to hear it's not just him, lol)

I like this bit on page 43:

"Norah reaches over and turns on the radio. A black-lipsticked oldie: The Cure - "Pictures of You" - track four of my Breakup Desolation Mix.
This, and every other song on this disc, is dedicated to Tris..."

I have never heard this song before so I YouTube'd it. It's a sad song that sets the mood in the chapter - Nick and Norah's broken hearts. I thought it helped to express Nick's feelings.

It seemed that both Nick and Norah had issues expressing their feelings and emotions ... especially when it came to love.

The easiest way for them express themselves was through music! I know it's cheesy, but I've always loved making mix tapes/CDs for people I care about. And, getting to experience someone's personal music collection is usually like taking a little peek at their soul - it can tell you a lot about a person.

I especially loved Norah's playlist in the end about rain and trains - brilliant!

There was a part of the book when Norah was talking about her dad and Alanis Morresette (I don't think I spelled her last name right). It never mentions her last name in the book... but she's an awesome singer. One of the songs that she mentioned, "You Oughta Know", is one of my favorites by her.

What I really liked about this book was the making the CDs have themes on what's going on in their lives. I used to do that constantly as a teen. I remember I would make my boyfriend one or he would make me one. Now I don't do that as much especially since now I do it legally! $$$$$$ When I was a teen you used to be able to buy Cd singles for like $5 in the store and I would always buy those.
