I think not. I think this is a story about women and susceptibilities, more than anything. Sam seems as if is was in for the adventure at first but quickly didn't like where things were headed. I found him likable and one of the easier to identify with characters, as well.

I think she had a psychotic break. There is a lot of stress during childbirth and an added immense amount during her pregnancy that I felt painted this seen. I felt this ending was simply ambiguous to seperate those that would/could believe from those that won't/can't as it serves to wrap that theme of the story up.

No. I don't feel the baby was switched. I think Sam researched and kept his research hidden bc he didn't totally believe. I know they weren't to speak of Teilo but I feel (want to believe?) that he was more ashamed of entertaining the idea than anything.

Nope. I think her mom was a drunk and heard similar stories from neighbors, etc around that time period. I buy into the backwoods hidden cousin side of the story.

I think they mold them greatly. How many women go through relationship after relationship looking for "Prince Charming" or feel they're ugly and don't live up to the princesses? I still don't like to look in mirrors at night bc of Bloody Mary and I think I was in 5th grade when I heard of that for the first time!
I think ones that have any kind of "lesson" do. For example: Hansel and Gretel- don't trust strangers.

I think Phyllis and Lisa are the dreamers and Hazel and Evie are the scared schemers. I think they serve well as couples but no I don't think either has more sway over the other. Hazel and Evie I think were both more of plotters but fearful of the outcomes. Evie didn't want Lisa to know the truth, for instance, as a way to protect her but she couldn't release her out of fear and also I think she was jealous of how liked Lisa was and had "something over her" so to speak. I think all the females had strong personalities and there was a lot of push/shove going on interpersonally.

I think this 'power" comes from Teilo being a super-idea. A fairy King! Think of how amazing that must be to the mundane every day life of a small town girl. The magic of it would be hard to resist.

A weakness- this blind belief completely shattered their world. The world is gray. To forsake your whole life to taste some sweet fruits of a "fairy realm" when you are meeting resistance at every side is a definite weakness, imo. Just as in house hunting you're told not to fall in love with a house because you will make unsound decisions bc of emotions.

Yes, and they did in this story, didn't they? I think as much as we try and seperate ourselves from our history, you can't. Imagine a hurtful comment recieved as a child that may stick with you for years to come. Now imagine a whole web of a story involving your whole immediate family...
Absolutely. I don't care to go into them, but, yes.

I think Sam represents more as someone that has gone through a trauma. He shuts out that part of his life and keeps it a secret. I think Evie was on the other "end" of the deceit and didn't turn out much differently. She was still willing to decieve and perpetuate their familie's story as she had during childhood. I think Sam grew the most.

I think Phoebe serves two roles. The first is to show how EASILY it is for a person to get completely wrapped up in a story and to give the outside window in. The second, is to bring more realism to the fairy side of the story. Her mother closely parallels some of the incidents Sam reasearched so I think it's supposed to push belief to that side of the fence. I feel that her mother had alcoholism and possibly other mental disease. My cynical side pushes me to believe this was a large family tragedy and any similarities between her mothers death and Sam's reasearch are coincidental and just serve to push the story along.

I believe it affects them greatly. She is likely always waiting for the fall out. Looking for the moment when she can point her finger and pinpoint the moment another male has failed her. I feel like she wants to overcome this side of her but walks gently towards the future bc there is a background skepticism painted by her childhood.

I think Evie acts out of jealousy and a twisted sense of "protecting". I think to begin she didn't want to out her side of the family but also she had something over Lisa who came across as the more socially accepted of the two. I think, as the story progressed, Evie soon realized how susceptible her cousin was and started to see what kind of dangers could be wrapped up in what she may have seen as a game to begin with. This is why she showed the book around to try and pull Lisa out of this spell, so to speak. So in the begining, I think she was trying to protect her brother and as it progressed I think she was trying to protect her cousin that she looked up to. All in all I think she had a great burden for her age. I'd say yes, she is responsible, but how often are we influenced by our family/peers when we want to make a different decision? I'd be more inclined to give her more credit to innocence if I didn't feel there was a current of jealousy running through her when it all started. Also, how come it took SO long to let her go? Surely, after a time, she'd feel Lisa would believe it for true but could still salvage some of life in the real world.
