An overview like you're offering opinions about how the story flows, or maybe the existence of plot holes, and the like?

message 6: by Alice (new)

Alice Sabo (alice_sabo) | 34 comments Yes, Jeffrey. In my critique group, and reading a lot of self-pubs, I have come across muddled plots and info dumps and stilted dialog. I think someone starting out doesn't need an editor as much as they need an informed reader. Someone who can say "The story stalls here" and why.

I read a mystery recently where the red herring subplot had more substance than the main plot. It made me feel like the author would much prefer to write that story. And maybe he should!

Since I am new to the business, I would be willing to negotiate my fees until I can build up a client base.

Justin Wilkerson | 14 comments I know most indie authors say this, but I don't have the money to pay for any sort of professional editor. However, I do want some extra eyes to look over my 2nd book before I publish it.

I've proofread it twice myself, but I learned from my 1st book how many things I miss, even after reading it roughly 6 times.

What I would like is 2-3 people willing to just highlight and mark-up a .pdf of my 2nd book and send it back to me. Anyone willing to do this for me would have my thanks. You could even just do part of the book if you want. Anything anyone would be willing to go over would be appreciated.

What editing am I looking for? Grammar, punctuation, general proofreading. Making sure I have the right words. Anyone who wants to comment on the flow and continuity on the story as well is more than welcome.

If someone does edit the whole thing and would like to, I'd be willing to add their names as editor when I publish to Amazon and B&N.

I hope this request isn't seen as a scoff on the professionals in this thread, I simply have no money to spare. I'm dealing with moving in January and starting Graduate school.

Anyways, thanks in advance to anyone willing to spend their freetime reading/editing my work. If you're interested in doing me this favor go ahead and shoot me a message.

Here is a brief 2 line blurb. It isn't great because it is literally my first shot at a blurb for the book lol.

"Fury" book 2 of the sci-fi/fantasy seris: The Ghost Wars Saga:

With the aid of the Great Dragon, Destor Rudir has returned to seek vengeance on his brother, Cuzak. King Cuzak, ruler of the Kingdom of Specter on Earth, must once again fight for the survival of his people against his corrupt and traitorous brother.

Justin - I'd recommend posting something in the beta reader thread and in the Need a Review? thread. Both are good places to possibly find some eyes to help comb through the book to help eliminate those pesky typos.

Kris (marketing_gurl) | 5 comments Hi All
I work with quite a few goodreads authors and have very reasonable rates with fairly quick turnaround times. If you'd like a short sample edit, please contact me at www.final-edits.com

A.K. (akbutler) | 43 comments I don't know if this is appropriate so please delete if it is, but I'd just like to give a shout out to the editor I used. He's brilliant. I googled and scanned through over 100 editors before I picked him and it was the best writing decision I ever made. Stephen Parolini of noveldoctor.com, if you're looking for a pro editor, check him out. (He does developmental, not line editing.)

Laurel Rockefeller (laurelarockefeller) | 31 comments I did not think I was a good editor until a GR friend who introduced me to this list showed me I'm a good editor. I am now offering my help to other authors and started my website. http://www.laurelarockefellerbooks.com/. I have comprehensive services -- from writing marketing copy and book descriptions to full editing to cover art. My prices are posted in both USD and BPS.

Kyra Halland (kyrahalland) Posting this for a friend of mine who has begun offering editorial services:

Karen Osborne
karenkirton@hotmail.com

Offering services as a story editor. comes at the story from the reader's point of view, looking for plot holes, character motivation, inconsistencies, prose that's difficult to read, etc. Can also edit for grammar and word usage.

She's been a message board hostess for e-Harlequin, and active in critique groups.

Her husband, a former journalist, is also available for copyediting services.

Mia Darien (mia_darien) | 425 comments I'm gonna give this thread a bit of a bump to throw my name back in here, as I'm looking to expand my client base.

My Pricing: The charge for editing is by word, from .001 to .002 centers per word. If a story needs even greater work, the charge may go as high as .003, but this is rare. All stories up to 5,000 words are a flat fee of $10 and 5,000 to 10,000 is a flat fee of $20, with the per word pricing starting after 10K.

For more about what I do, along with testimonials from authors I've worked for, you can check out my website:

http://www.miadarien.com/services-2/

((I also offer cover art and formatting.))

Thanks.
Mia

J.M. Rankin (jmrankin) | 54 comments Hi Everyone!
My name is Jacqui and I manage White Diamond Edits. I am a qualified copy-editor and proofreader, and have been working freelance for both writers and publishers alike for over five years. I am also a published author with my next two novels due for release later this year.

Having recently revamped my website I am now welcoming new writers who maybe in need of some editorial assistance.

I offer a free assessment of your first 1000 words. This not only helps you see how I work and if my methods are right for you, but it also helps me assess your work to see what level of assistance you require (I never take on work I feel I cannot effectively contribute to). I have offered this free assessment since day one and it has proved immensely popular.

For editing I charge £5 per 1000 words, and for proofreading £4 per 1000 words, and I can look at as much or as little of your work as you like, keeping you in total control of the whole process and its costs. I do not believe in charging for an entire manuscript or a certain word count as every book, and its writer, are different.

If you would like to contact me and discuss your project please feel free to do so, either through Goodreads (my author page at present), my direct email whitediamondedits@gmail.com, or via my website whitediamondedits.wordpress.com, where you will find more in-depth information and answers to other questions you may have.

I look forward to working with you.

Best wishes and happy writing,
Jacqui
