Woohoo!

I just started a new book, but it'll only take a couple days. After that, I will start this one up. =]

Gambled and lost... <.< >.>

I picked up Hunger Games for the hell of it the other day. Now I have to go back to the evil evil bookstore tomorrow for the real BotM. >:( :P :D So evil...so so evil...

Their coffee is evil too. I can hear it calling me to temptation from here...and maybe the discount bins...full of evil...

I'm not adorable. I'm full of evil. Hot, caramelly evil. And I have a stack of evil that followed me home.

Eeeeee-vil.... :D

Mary (med401) | 234 comments I put in a reserve. I should have it next week sometime. Unless somebody sneakily checked it out before my reserve went in. They only have one copy.

I never did finish this series. Maybe starting it again will encourage me to get them all read.

And Katt, I already started The Hunger Games again. It's a fast read; I bet you can finish that and Gunslinger this month.

I just started this up last night... now I was pretty sleepy when I started so I'm only on page five. :D

It's a tad confusing without any exposition though. Well, not confusing, just... I need more details of the world.

Ok hopefully this is one we will all read... and be able to discuss.

I'm not very far into this right now... last week's hours at work were pretty rough so I didn't have much reading time. I'm hoping to make some progress in it this week. =]

message 12: by Mary (new)

Mary (med401) | 234 comments I haven't got mine yet. The library is playing around with me(or something). My reserve keeps saying pending and then going back to reserve and then pending and so on. It just never says held. I probably should call and ask what's up but it seems so bitchy. If I don't get it this week I'll check on it.

I have read this but it was so long ago I've forgotten most of it. It was somewhere around the '90s. I remember it as being not bad, but the further I went in the series, the more I lost interest. I think that sometimes Stephen King went too far in trying to tie all his books together. I just much prefer his earlier work for this reason. He was less obsessed with everything being in the same universe then. And The Dark Tower series is his ultimate wrapping together of all his books. (As I recall it.)

Katt_goddess | 269 comments His writing has also changed as his disease progresses. It's like he needs to get everything down as brightly as possible, every detail possible, so that it isn't lost. He's trying to capture sight in black and white.

*goes back to reading...

What disease is that?

I read a good chunk of this today and it's weird... I feel like there's not enough context. Things are happening and there are characters, but... thats all they are. I almost feel like I'm reading this quick, first draft or something. >_<

Mary (med401) | 234 comments In a way, it's good if you've read other King works before you read dark tower. It's subtle but there are a lot of references to other books in this series.

I can't remember exact examples anymore; I just remember noticing that a lot. I'm sure there are some references I missed as well. I read most of King's first books but then my reading of him got spotty. There's just so darn much(and it's all so damn wordy and long). Don't get me wrong, in some cases he needs every single word, but in others I feel like he could have used an editor who wasn't afraid to take a red pencil to him.

Also King often likes to just plunge you into the story. Then you sink, or swim and figure it out as you go. I know you can do it. As I remember this book, disorientation is a part of the tale and it only seems fair that the reader have a dose of it too.

I hope I'm remembering the right King book and don't have to eat these words later.

Severe macular deterioration. He's going blind and it started early. Knowing that, you can kind of see why his writing has 'changed' slightly, how he gets more and more verbous over sometimes insignificant crap. He's trying to catch what can be seen on paper, probably hoping that one day he'll be able to go back and hear a particular passage and 'see' things once more.

Huh. That's interesting.

I finished up the book today (took me long enough) and I can't say I enjoyed it. I really enjoy it when I read something and rather than reading characters, I read about people. Rather than reading some made blatant fiction, I like to be drawn into the story and circumstances. Sadly, this was just blatant fiction about characters. There just... wasn't any emotion to it. I don't even feel like there was a plot.

I'm pretty disappointed because so many people enjoy The Dark Tower series... I was hoping this would be a bit more.

Also, succubus + ten year old = yuck.

Mary (med401) | 234 comments I haven't got it yet. (LOL) Maybe I shouldn't stress about it. I think they probably have it listed as there but can't find it. Lost in the library is the Gunslinger.

I used to be very persistent about reading things. That's how I got though three(I think) of the Dark Tower series. That and I do like some of Stephen King's stuff. I kept waiting for the Dark Tower to blow me away like I was told it would. It just never did and I just let it drop.

I still recommend The Shining, or if you're willing to read a very long book, the Stand, or Carrie, his first(and short)novel. Carrie is a solid three star book. It is what it is and doesn't apologize for it.

So far I find the story abit confusing.

There's really not much in the way of story for this one. It's like... King wrote the backbone for a story, but didn't bother to put in any details of the story. It's just really weird.

Mary:

I'll give some of his other books a try, hell, I might even try another book in this series... this one just wasn't very good. At all. I'm not sure why I even gave it two stars rather than one.
