Erin | 33 comments "One Amazing Thing" by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni is the story of nine strangers from different backgrounds being brought together by the disaster of an earthquake. Each individual tells their "one amazing story" and realizes that each person has their own reason for suffering and happiness. Why would they just now tell their story? In the event of something catastrophic, such as an earthquake, how do you know if you will ever have that chance again? And let's face it, telling stories would be a great distraction from a crumbling building. Plus, it is easy to be quick to judge others before you learn more about them.

My mother-in-law recommended this to me and I would recommend it to anyone who loves realistic fiction, relatable characters, and reading stories within stories. I found the individual stories sometimes more interesting than the overall book. This would be a great book club choice (there are questions in the back and an interview with the author) and feels like a quick read because there is a story for each character, so it breaks it up nicely and gives each person a voice. Some will make you laugh while the next story will make you tear up a little!
