I read this yesterday. My thoughts on this story are going to be covered by spoiler tags since its a short story and any reveal is a spoiler. (view spoiler)[The best I can garner from this story is that its about a girl who is a idiot savante or maybe has a severe form of Asperger syndrome. They call her condition "temporal autism" in the story so its something more akin to Asperger syndrome most likely. There is a treatment that will make her a normal child that can interact in the social norm but will also remove any of cognitive advantages the she currently has. She frequently talks about a pair of box toed ballet shoes that are old but she doesn't want to get rid of. I'm assuming this is supposed to be symbolic of her before and after the treatment. So in the end when she says that she doesn't want new ballet shoes it means she doesn't want to go through with the treatment. (hide spoiler)]
