I think that this list from The UK newspaper, "The Guardian" is far superior to the NPR list. It contains a number of titles that some may find objectionable, but I tend to love works that skirt the edges of genre conventions. Overall, it has a nice blend of pre-genre works, typical classics, and books that should be recognized more by Sci-fi and Fantasy readers.
I've read 15 of the books and seen 2 movies of others. I've never even heard of about 1/2 of the books on the list (my lifetime reading list totals over 8500).
