Thanks for joining the group. It's all about talking about books you are currently reading, books that have really bitten you as exciting and your favourites books. And even books you want to read. It's just a place to talk about books and share your opinion.

Introduce yourself here ...

Maybe state your favourite book/series/author and a book you think has bite or has really bitten you!

I'm Olivia.

To date I've read 186 books according to Goodreads (probably a few more than that). I'm from England! I'm a little bit of a geek and reading is my passion.

I don't have a favourite book, but my favourite series is Harry Potter followed by J.D Robb's In Death series.

A book that has really bitten me I'd have to say would be ... The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins or Kiss the Dust by Elizabeth Laird.

Heather B (heatherbenson) Hi, I'm Heather.

I've loved reading for as long as I can remember. To me every book is a way to experience a new world and leads you on it's own special adventure. I guess you could call it my favourite drug, my escape from reality. I love reading purely as a hobby and have never been a fan of literature classes because I find they take the fun out of it for me.

I don't think I can really say I have a favourite book or series or author. For me they are all so different that it is truly hard to compare them. There are some I would say are better than others but there is not one that stands out alone as the best to me.

Off the top of my head one book that I can say has bitten me would have to be
Blackbird: A Childhood Lost and Found by Jennifer Lauck. I'm usually more into reading fiction novels, but this memoir definitely touched me in a way that I don't think any other book has. It's the story of a young girls life and every thing that she was put through before even becoming a teen. It shows true strength and courage.

Hi, I'm Gavin.

I'm from Scotland. I've also loved reading for as long as I can remember. If there is a more enjoyable hobby nobody has gotten round to sharing it with me!. An enforced two year break from reading between 2008 and 2010 only served to reaffirm this belief.

I read purely for pleasure. The darlings of literature like Shakespeare, Dickens and Tolstoy hold no appeal for me. I'm of the opinion that life is to short to waste time on books which require an effort to read.

I like books in all sorts of genres. Likable characters and happy endings are about the only requirements I have.

Favorite series?. Well there is George.R.R.Martins's A Song of Ice and Fire, and J.R.Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood.

Books that have bitten me:
Covet by J.R.Ward
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Curse of Chalion bl Lois Mcmaster Bujold
Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson
Ultraviolet by R.J.Anderson.

And that's just in the last couple of months!.

I don't mind some of the classic authors there that you mentioned. But I do like your statement about not wasting your time on them, quite cleaver. I have to almost agree. I'd rather enjoy what I'm reading than puzzle over it's meaning.

Hi Gavin!

I have to agree with you. Classics seem a little over-rated with how long it takes you to understand them. However the ones I've read to date, I really enjoyed so it's hard for me to say I wouldn't read them. To date I've read one Shakespeare, Hamlet. Then The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde.

What do you think to George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series because I've been thinking of reading them for a while now and I just haven't gotten around to it?

Ohh, I forgot to mention another book that's certainly bitten me, is Handle With Care by Jodi Picoult.

I read it about a year ago now, got it for Christmas and didn't do anything for a couple of days other than read. It was a really thought provoking book that tackled some really sensitive issues and it made me cry! A lot!

I have not completely given up on the classics. I am determined to like The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. I have had one failed attempt already but I will not let that deter me.

I loved George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series. It has a large cast of complicated characters each with their own story and motivations. This can lead to it being a little slow at first as you have to get used to a new world and a large cast of characters spread across multiple locations.
Have you seen the Game of Thrones TV series?.
I should also mention that epic fantasy has long been my favorite genre of book.

No. I just got Jane Austen's Mansfield Park to read. I've never read one of her books before, and I'm thinking of giving it a go.

Ahhh. I've heard that from a couple of my friends who read the series about the characters mounting up. No, I haven't watched the TV series. I didn't realise it was on until the second series started.
I own the book, but once again it belongs to the large pile of to-reads.
Fantasy isn't something I'd say I've read a lot of, never mind epic fantasy. However I do appreciate the genre and I have plans to read more of it!

The Lord of the Rings are on my to-be read list and the Narnia series, along with Game of Thrones.

I've failed to get through a book before too, but I still want to give it another shot. I don't like quitting halfway through.

My sister loves Jane Austen. One of the few classic authors she has ever read as far as I can tell.

LotR, Narnia, and Game of Thrones are all very different books.
I like Game of thrones but it does take place in a harsh adult world.

I loved Narnia as a kid. It was so full of magic and wonder!.
I have not read it in a long time though.

I absolutely hated Lord of the Rings. I tried three different times to complete this book and never made it past page 150 on any a them. It was a birthday gift and the giver was so enthusiastic I felt bad when I finally donated it to my local library. That being said, if I had read one more passage of those boring, boring hobbits singing, I fear the the book would have suffered and entirely different fate.

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

Well that must be a good sign. I've heard good reports on her, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I know. Game of Thrones is probably what I'll read first. I prefer something a little bit more gritty.

I've attempted to read the first Narnia book twice now. I'm going to give it one last shot, but I kept putting it down all the time.

I've tried reading the Hobbit and I got a bit bored, but that was a few years ago.

Books that have really bitten for me are any books by Brandon Sanderson. He is my favourite author at the moment.

I can be slow getting through books sometimes as well. I'm just naturally not a fast reader, so I have to dedicate a lot of time to a book to get through it.
I'm also from Canada, nice to see someone else is too.

Hi Matt!

Thanks for joining. I wouldn't worry about pace of reading, it can take me between 2 weeks and 2 hours to read one book.

Reading is the reason I made this group, not that you can read four books in a day and 700 in a year. haha.

I've never heard of Brandon Sanderson, but I take it he's a fantasy author from your comment about liking fantasy on the monthly read.

:)

Hello Matt

Books take me anywhere from a few days to many weeks to complete. I do not get through all books as fast as I'm racing through Way of Kings
. I've had more free time than normal lately and I've been listening to the book at work!.

You have read a book in two hours Olivia?. I'm curious, which one?. It can take me longer than that to read the shopping list!.

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't know how you listen to books! Seriously, I'd fall asleep or tune chapters out.

Umm. Well it was probably just over two hours. I didn't time it exactly, but it was one of J.D.Robb's books.

One of the first few, I think it was Rapture in Death. It was just under 300 pages! Generally it takes about 4-6 hours to read a 300-400 page book if I sit and read.

Eye problems have forced me to listen to books since 2009. It did take a while to get used to audiobooks and I even seem to prefer slightly different books in audio than I would have when reading.

I have the first J.D.Robb book Naked in Death. Have not read it yet though. I did enjoy Genuine Lies by the same author.

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

Ouch. I'm sorry to hear that!

Please do not compare Nora Roberts and J.D.Robb to me. I hate Nora Roberts, but then I started reading J.D.Robb's books and I adore them. Strange, I know, but I just put the two as completely different authors even if they are the same woman. For me the writing style seemed different. I think it depends on the book you read by her.

I have noticed how Roberts likes the names Eve and Roarke too much, which put me off other books that included those books because of the names orginally being in the 'In Death' series.

Naked in Death is amazing! I'm slightly biased probably because I adore the whole series (that I've read so far), but I urge you to read it!

AnnMarie (credoroza) Hi there! I am Annmarie, Credoroza on Twitter. Love reading. Anything that piques my interest , I am on it. Huge fan of paranormal romances and mystique. I am rather fond of the Highland warriors and steamy men too, though, vamps are always my fav :) Love chatting about my fav's and I always post my reviews here and on my blog as well. Always open for chats pro and con of what I like and don't like. Well thought out arguments can be a lot of fun as well as give a different perspective on something I might not have agreed with.

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

Hey Annmarie!

I think we all can't resist dabbling in paranormal romances! There is something just irresistible about them!

Well get involved in our group! We're currently posting nominations on May book reads if you'd like to post an idea/take part in our May group read!

Jeffrey Armando (GonfftheMousethief) Hello! I'm Jeff. I haven't really read much since I was younger but im trying to start reading more. I heard about this site from a co-worker and I thought it would give me more motivation to start reading if I got into one of these groups. This seems like a fun little group and I can't wait to start reading and discussing the monthly reads ^^

Hi Jeff!
Well it's great to hear you're getting back into reading. Welcome to the group. There aren't many of us, but we're a very friendly bunch.
Welcome to the group!

Lisbeth Avery {Domus Libri} (lisbethavery) I'm Lisbeth. I've always loved reading. I read YA. The past two years I read around 300 books (that's when I started logging them in). I stared off on http://www.shelfari.com two years ago, but switched to Goodreads in March.

My favorite series might be Gone by Michael Grant one day and something else the next. I can't name a favorite book ^^

Hey Lisbeth! :) Damn, you read really fast because that is an awful lot of books!

Never heard of that one particularly, but I know the feeling of having different favourite books.

Hi everybody, I'm Jennie from (not-so-sunny) Dorset. I have always loved reading, usually have at least two books on the go at any one time and can't imagine a life without books. I am very happy that all three of my children love to read too.

message 26: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Jennie!

Nice to meet you (cyberly). I hope to see you around and participating in the group activities.

I'm Olivia, your mod. I generally have about four books at one time, so I'm glad to hear I'm not the only person who reads multiple books. haha.

Life without books certainly wouldn't be the same.

Welcome to the group Jennie.

It's not summer time in Dorset?. Your shattering a dream of mine. If the money fairy ever stumbled my way, I had always planned to move to Dorset. Sunny French weather while still being in a place where the locals speak English.

Up my way were on to our fifth week in a row without a single dry day. If this keeps up I'm going to have to think about building an Ark.

I never used to read multiple books at the same time before I found Goodreads. Now I've got three on the go.

Samantha Reath | 6 comments Hi! My names Samantha and i'm Canadian. (ehhh? ;) lol) Only recently started using Goodread have found it to be unbelievably helpful for finding new books. I am just starting to list ones I have read though so my books read number is inaccurate. Last summer i kept track of my reading hours only to find i spent 600+ hours reading O_o. I loved seeing the title of this group when I found it. I have truly been Bitten by books. I dont have any real favorites for individual books, as its so hard to chose but series wise:
The Daughters Of Time by Lisa Bergran
The Iron Fey Julie Kaguwa
Anything Stephen R Lawhead
The Bloody Jack series by L.A Meyer
As of late i would say that I have really been 'Bitten" by dystopians. I cant seem to get enough :)

Welcome Samantha!

Goodreads is a great place to find new books.

I've been meaning to read something by Kagawa and L.A Meyer for a while. I failed in my last attempt to read Stephen R. Lawhead. I just could not get into Pendragon. I may try again someday.

I can't find any info on The Daughters Of Time by Lisa Bergran. Did you mean the Rivers of Time series by Lisa Tawn Bergren?. If so it's another series on my to-read list.

Have you tried the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead. I'm reading it now, it's pretty good.
or
Ultraviolet by R.J. Anderson. It's a YA sci-fi that I thought was very original.

message 30: by Samantha (new)

Samantha Reath | 6 comments Your right it was Lisa tawn Bergren. And the rivers of Time. I just wasn't looking at the book when I wrote that. Stephen R Lawhead books are quite hard to get into but Grail and pendragon were the hardest in my opinion. Try starting with Taliesin, Byzantium, Or Patrick: Son of Ireland. Those were my favorites by him. I've been thinking of reading Ultraviolet. Thanks :)

Ha ha! I think we've managed one dry day, maybe, and I'm not sure we do all speak English....

Opps, I obviously wasn't very awake when setting up this. Sorry guys. haha.

Hello Samantha, I'm the mod of the group and the person who usually bumbles around late to say hi to everybody.

I hope you enjoy your time hear and sounds like you love reading just as much as us all! :)

600 hours? Wow, I don't think I tally mine, but I tend to spend quite a lot. My cousin sat and stared at me in shock for reading a book in about 4 hours this weekend. It was rather amusing. However 600 hours, I'm not sure I'm there yet!
