Jon (jonmoss) | 529 comments Please post here if you are planning to read Furies of Calderon by Jim Butcher.

Also note your first impressions, but please avoid spoilers if at all possible.

Do we have a discussion leader? We have one week before we get started on May 1st.

Ciao, Jon

Kamilah (chiccitygal) I have read the entire series and can't wait until we can discuss it. I think they are a wonder set of books and look forward to getting others opinions on the events that happen throughout the story.

Brandon I also have read the whole series and and enjoyed it though the ending felt a bit rushed.

Stacia (stacias) | 11 comments I just read it last month and I enjoyed it. I do think that since I love The Dresden Files so much, I had really high expectations for Furies. For me, Furies suffered in comparison to Dresden. Still, I liked the system of magic, the characters, and I look forward to reading the other books in the series.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I read the series last year, so will be interested in discussing.

Vivian I read the series last year because Butcher was the special guest at a writer's convention I attended. I'm glad I did, they were well worth the time. I'll be interested to hear other impressions on the books.

Valerie Zambito Also already read and have to say this is one of my favorite series of all time. I enjoyed the magic system, the evolution of the characters, the Romanesque setting, the intrigue, and especially the character of Fidelis. The pithy dialogue is smart and funny, and the action is fast-paced. Really enjoyed.

Jasmine M | 110 comments my sister read the series and she encouraged me to do the same, I read some reviews and found the premise very promising, now that it won the vote I have another reason to read it :)

Andrea (iichron714) Looking forward to reading it!

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 530 comments This was one of the worst books that I have ever read. The characters all felt blend, flat cookie cutter with no personalities at all.

Valerie Zambito I'm plugging my ears, Kevin! Lol

Laura Reid (reid2l) I read it last month in anticipation of participating in this discussion. It's the first Butcher book i've read and found it entertaining. It wasn't a deep or complicated read, lots of action and fast paced which can be a turn off at times, but all in all i would call it a good brain-candy kind of read. I plan to read thru the series sporadically.

Eli Adelholm (eliadelholm) | 46 comments I am considering joining in on this one as well. I've heard so much praise of this Jim Butcher guy lately that I'd already decided to pick up something by him soonish. This would seem like the perfect opportunity.

message 14: by Sam (new) - rated it 3 stars

Sam (sammy_witch) I have only read the first in the series but am a fan of Jim Butcher. Excited to hear what everybody has to say.

message 15: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments I read books 1-3 a few years back; I enjoyed them, but right now the details are fuzzy.

message 16: by Kate (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kate | 42 comments I love this series, but the first time I read this book I found it somewhat confusing and not great. The fourth book is definitely my favorite though, so keep reading!

Yvonne (yinari) Looking forward to this one too. I'll start as soon as I've finished Mockingjay

message 18: by Ena (new) - rated it 3 stars

Ena (enantoiel) I'm intending to join this read. This series never caught my attention but as a group read, I'll give it a try.

Michele | 85 comments I've bought the book and hope to start reading it asap. I had hoped to finish A Game of Thrones, but I just may set that aside. My biggest fear is that I will forget which group is reading it! :)

message 20: by Lara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lara | 84 comments I've read the entire series and loved it. I'll pop in on the discussions, but don't think I'll have time to reread Furies.

message 21: by Katy (new) - added it

Katy (kathy_h) | 95 comments Haven't read this. With the group discussion seems like a good time to give it a try. Count me in.

message 22: by Margot (new) - added it

Margot (freezebaby) I plan to read, though not sure when in May I'll be getting to it. Only just started Mistborn: The Final Empire last week.

Jennifer (etoiline) I read the entire series as it came out, though I almost didn't when I got the first book in paperback for free--the cover wasn't the best and the blurb didn't grab me. I'm glad I got over that, though ;) This book has some of my favorite characters in it, and I've been to a few Butcher signings where he talks about the series' background, which makes it even more fun. I like how things tie together in this series--stuff from the first novel makes more sense when you get into the next books--but I felt a little disappointed in the last.

message 24: by Sean (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sean Cunningham | 3 comments I had great fun reading this series. I look forward to seeing what other people think of it.

Sonia Lal | 19 comments Read this a while back, but I should reread for the discussion

message 26: by Bill (new) - rated it 3 stars

Bill Blume | 29 comments Getting ready to start reading FURIES tonight. Read part of STORM FRONT, but never finished it. Wasn't because I disliked the story, characters or his writing, though. Simply had to stop halfway through to read something else which I needed for a panel discussion. Looking forward to giving Butcher's writing another go. I have many friends who love his books, so I have high hopes.

message 27: by Janny (new)

Janny (jannywurts) | 807 comments I read this title quite a few years back - certainly will follow the discussion and chime in if I have something relevant to add.

Emily I'm going to get right to reading this as soon as it comes into my library. I'm looking forward to it because everyone is saying pretty good things about it.

Yvonne (yinari) I'm about halfway now. I really like the magic system so far.

message 30: by Bill (new) - rated it 3 stars

Bill Blume | 29 comments I'm just a few chapters into the book, and I have to agree with compliments regarding the magic system in the book. Thus far, it seems a different approach from most, and Butcher shows off his skill as a writer in his introduction to it. No info-dumping. FURIES is off to a good start for me.

Anna-louise | 81 comments This book is all kinds of actioned pack. I'm all tense reading the first half! and i cried! ok i'm soppy but the feelings of Isana towards her brother, ugh, just got me right there *points to my heart* i'm definately enjoying this book, i hope the second half is as good as the first!

Michele | 85 comments I am about 1/4 into the book. I like it so far, but I am impatient for more to happen. Still thinking I like the Dresden series more.

Martin Belcher (martinbelcher) Ive started this book a little later than everyone else, I'm 149 pages in and really enjoying it! Can't put it down that's a good sign.....

message 34: by Joon (new)

Joon (everythingbeeps) I've just started it. Not far, only like page 67 or so, but surprisingly it's got me hooked. It's been really hard for me to get into fantasy lately, and I'd kind of avoided this series because I'd heard it wasn't as humorous as the Dresden books, and for some reason that disappointed me, but I'm glad I got over that.

message 35: by Sean (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sean Cunningham | 3 comments I haven't read Dresden so can't compare, but Codex Alera does have a real sense of fun about it I appreciate.

Jonathan Collins I'm late to the party but I've just finished this.

I thought that it was a good, easy read but one that probably suffered a little because I read it after Name of the Wind and The Stormlight Archives.
