Shaun Eyles | 6 comments Hi there

Do you want to read vampire novels that bring back the vampires of old that want to kill humans and not date them? If so, do you also want a novel that makes you laugh, has action and drama, and, of course, blood?

If that sounds interesting, why not check out my series called called the Novels of The Second Coming. :)

Christine (bloodandmatzah) | 4 comments Definitely! In fact, people tell me the snark factor in my novel BLOOD AND MATZAH is pretty high.

Greetings! I'm recently self-published and hoping to spread the word about Jewish, time-travelling vampires. It's great to have the opportunity to communicate with other readers/writers! Hope you enjoy and I look forward to following other lovers of the paranormal!

"Of course, you realize this means war! Help me win a bet with my husband. I've got a prime rib dinner in the wings if I win. And well, we all know what my husband wins if I don't; )

I'm trying to reach 1,000 hits and 10 new flags from other countries on my website http://bloodandmatzah.com and 25 legitimate posts on my blog http://blogandmatzah.com by May 31.

Mama needs a fancy dinner at The Outback! Thanks in advance for your support. Send me a link to your site/blog and I'll return the favor.

Happy reading/writing to all my new indie author friends!"

Christine (bloodandmatzah) | 4 comments Ten days, over 1,000 web hits, 25 blog posts (by the skin of my teeth) and 6 foreign flags. Many huge thanks to all of my new friends and friends I have not yet met who visited my site and told a friend from outside the USA to take a gander onto my site http://bloodandmatzah.com/

You guys rock!

Unfortunately, I was four flags short so I didn't win the bet with my husband. Looks like Mickey D's instead of prime rib at The Outback. : (

Ardy Ardy (ardybooks) | 52 comments Every book needs a little bit of humor, especially one intended to scare you. The challenge is putting the humor in without looking like you created a comic relief character. I can write comedy, like my book The Noble Mr. Prickles and I can write horror like Akeldama: The Field of Blood (both available at smashwords.com) but when I wrote Akeldama I had to add a bit of humor just to break the dark monotony of the book. My favorite lines in that book are "This old ass is moving as fast as it can." and "Yeah, my brother's a cop killer!" A chuckle here and there can not only provide relief from all the terror, but it can also put the reader at ease, making the next scare even more frightening. BTW, one of my favorite vampire movies is Vampires Suck. So yeah, humorous vampires can be fun.

Sarah (thebabygrl) If it had sarcastic funny momments. Not one like vampire sucks or anything. I love charactors that have humor with them (:

Enjoy!

message 15: by Matthew (new)

Matthew Ryan (matthewdryan) | 12 comments Yeah, I forgot about Vampires Suck. I saw that movie... I guess that makes me a hypocrite. It was an amusing change of pace. Still, I prefer vampires in the traditional role as creature of horror, not stand up comics, or teen heartthrobs.

Genre-blending? Party of one! I’m so there. Jewish, time-travelling vampires on a mission from G-d, waging a holy war against evil? Check. Romance, crime-fighting, lust, disco, annoying Jewish mothers, sexy vampires who travel back in time just in time to see the rescue of the Danish Jews in 1943? Why not? Politics, religion, history, chicken soup, gun control and the kitchen sink? You have to ask? If one is not pissing off enough people, why bother? Don't worry, you don't have to be Jewish to read it. But it couldn't hoit. Eh, it's up to you.

Ardy Ardy (ardybooks) | 52 comments Oy Vey that blood and matzah thing sounds cool. I just read a story called Death Without Parole on Smashwords.com. It was awesome, and in addition to scaring me, which almost no story can do, it made me laugh more than a few times.

Christine (bloodandmatzah) | 4 comments Thanks! I had fun writing it. I'm now working on Book 2 of the trilogy. Shalom!

message 19: by Jeff (new)

Jeff Dawson | 63 comments Humor when used in the right context can allow the reader a small reprieve. I was able to incorporate a bit of humor in the current book Occupation, but very little. I couldn't justify humor as two vampire clans clahsed with The Third Reich.

If one is doing a spoof, it is well warranted, but if they are writing a serious story, it would probably need to be in drips and draps.

message 20: by Kayla (new)

Kayla halfpenny (khalf) | 59 comments you are so right

message 21: by Ardy (new)

Ardy Ardy (ardybooks) | 52 comments My problem is that I can write humor and I can write horror, but I have trouble combining the two. For example, my Mr. Prickles book is very funny, but not very scary, whereas Akeldama is quite frightening, but with few laughs. Of course some characters are going to be funny, but I would never add a comic relief character just to break the tension. Those characters are so obvious. One writer who I have found can seemlessly blend both laughs and screams is Joss Whedon. Love watching Buffy, despite what certain characters I have written have said. Anything that can both scare me and make me laugh is awesome!

Ardy Ardy (ardybooks) | 52 comments Just read a book that I bought at the Goodwill for a buck. It's called "Nightlight" and it's a parody of Twilight. It's by the Harvard Lampoon and I was laughing out loud. What I would like to see is Vampire humor that isn't some sort of spoof of another vampire series or movie. Loved Vampires Suck, but a vampire comedy that doesn't get all of its jokes by ripping on someone else would be refreshing.

message 26: by Sandrine (new)

Sandrine Genier | 133 comments I think well placed "natural" humor can work very well in a novel that is basically horror based. It seems to add some depth, a momentary distraction before the next horrific event takes place. Characters reactions can be funny, even in the face of horror, or misunderstandings can be funny--the reader is in on the seriousness of the situation but the character's scene show them just not getting what is going on. The humor needs to be skillfully handled in any case.

Just to remind everyone of my new book

Today's world is difficult for everyone, especially teenagers.
They face the stresses of school, deciding whom to date, and the biggie of sex, just to name a few.

Imagine all of those things ten times worse, and you might get an idea of what it's like being a living, breathing teenage vampire.

At last, the world can read about the life of a girl with good teeth, her problems with strong sunlight that gave her spots, and the sunblock that made her hair go yucky and produced more spots. Yes, sunlight was dangerous, as she could be the first teenager in history to die from terminal acne! In her everyday life, older vampires expected her to walk about at night in the traditional female uniform, a see-through, 18th-century nightdress, without undies! Well, this female vampire knew why the cold winds blowing along the corridors were called, "male winds," so she wore her see-through nightdress over jeans and a very thick jumper. To be sure that people would still know she was a vampire, the jumper had a very large, pink bat on it. And as to guys, well, it was normal for a girl to dream about guys; she just wished the dreams could have involved chocolates and holding hands, not leaping out at someone, ripping off his shirt, and demanding to know what blood type he was (at least not on the first date).

Amy, that is hilarious! I want to read it. It sounds just a little bit like the teen girl vampire in my novel-in-progress except at least 10 times funnier.

message 36: by Robin (new)

Robin (robinlayne) | 141 comments The vamp novel I'm working on has humor in it that I hope will help make it entertaining. It is after all primarily about teenagers, with all their quirks and problems, who just happen to have a big problem on their hands: a boyfriend-stealing, neighbor-killing girl with sharp teeth people usually can't see for some reason.
I have enjoyed reading a number of very funny vampire books, movies, and TV shows. I wrote an article about them a while back, complete with my own illustrations: http://robinlayne.hubpages.com/hub/Th...
Hope you enjoy the article and try out some great reads.

Robin (robinlayne) | 141 comments If you like very sexy romance that is also funny, try Kerrelyn Sparks' vampire series. I read the first one, and it was a little formulaic, and too sexually graphic for me, but it was definitely funny.

message 41: by Rita (new)

Rita (rccola1945hotmailcom) | 513 comments I would like to read it. Every book needs just a little bit of humor in them just to take the edge off, of the horror in them. Wish I had spell ck. now. I never was the best speller. HA! HA!

Stephanie (stephieja) | 11 comments Here's a vampire series with humor!

The Undead Heart (#1) by Tate Jackson

Rebecca Stockdale had enough issues in her life; parents that hated her for the strange abilities that she had been born with, she was about to move away from her sister and only friend, Bev, and she had had a really bad date that would change her forever.
Just when she was about to escape the drama that she had always lived in, Richard, a vampyre, walked into her life and shattered her reality with one request; travel back in time to 1888 to stop a psychopathic vampyre bent on revenge and save the family she never knew she had.
She would be joined on her journey by a band of vampyre hunters. Hunters who, centuries ago, had vowed to slay all vampyres. A vow they set aside to protect the family that they had come to love, knowing that the outcome of that decision would be an eventual battle. A battle of decapitation and blood; a battle they may not survive.
She was leaving a life she would kill to get away from for a family she would gladly die to protect, but could she do it? Could she make it back alive? Did she possess the strength and courage it would take to change the past and save their future?
She was about to find out.

The Undead Heart is the 1st of the 3 book Blood Thirst Series.
http://www.amazon.com/Undead-Heart-Th...
Blood Thirst (#2)
The continuing story of Beck Jaxon and her family: The Young/Jaxon family won the battle, but Elderson escaped, again. Now, Beck and her family have to deal with the losses they suffered during the battle with Elderson’s clan.
They bury their dead and morn the loss of their family members. But there would be no rest for them. Elderson may have escaped this time, but he will be back. He wants Beck dead and will stop at nothing to make that happen.
Will Elderson succeed, or will Beck and her family finally rid the world of Royal Elderson and the evil he has unleashed for centuries?
Blood Thirst is the 2nd book in the 3 book Blood Thirst Series

Travis Luedke (twluedke) | 13 comments Some of my all time favorite novels have an artful blend of comedy and many other elements. I think as a writer, if we can't get at least one LOL moment into a novel of any genre, we aren't doing our job.

I write vampire fiction, basically its urban fantasy thriller with a splash of erotica, but there are a few moments, those genuinely funny moments. Even if you just snicker a little bit, even if its not an LOL, its there.

Comedy is a part of life. Try taking a walk into Walmart without laughing at one or more situations you encounter. If we as writers are to imitate real life in our works, we must have a touch of comedy.

Check out my blog post, a BDSM interview with an erotica author. Catch a couple laughs.

Paddy (paddythegod) | 2 comments Matthew wrote: "I would read a vampire novel with bits of humor sprinkled throughout, but not one that's intended to just be a comedy."
I agree totally, not sure how the comedy would work, but I read vampire stories mainly for their cruelty and violence. I realize that sounds awful but that is what a vampire represents to me and why they are the ultimate horror stories. In Stoker's Dracula, Count Dracula raped, kidnapped a baby to feed his wives and of course just murders . The fact that he does it dressed as a well educated aristocrat that appears not at all out of place in Victorian England is even more chilling.
Bearing this in mind, comedy, romance and consensual sex cannot play a part in the story without taming it somehow. This of course is just my opinion, and I don't limit myself just to hard core gothic vampire stories, they're just my favourite. Vampires are after all the devils creatures so making them funny (or sparkle)just isn't right!

message 49: by Stuart (new)

Stuart Land (stuartland) That writers portray vampires differently is what makes it interesting for me. It's the writing that needs to be good. A great story with great characters is what's important. There's some great stuff out there that I didn't write. LOL! My vampire series ORIGINAL BLOOD, follows vampires in a realistic world. It's not a comedy, but there are comedic moments because vampires, like humans, can do some funny things. That said, my stories and characters are deeper than the usual Gothic portrayals, more akin to Anne Rice, than Stephanie Meyer.

message 50: by Tracy (new)

Tracy S. (tgreywolfe) | 7 comments I think all novels benefit from humor. Humor is a part of life and if you want a paranormal novel to feel real, it needs to be there. A vampire novel is particularly suited to dark humor.

In my novel, The Vampire Diary of Buster Keaton, my main character is a slapstick comedienne with the story told from his point of view, so it's natural for him to look at his situation in a comic way.

It helps him get through his ordeal.
