Roby | 135 comments I have just watched a new episode of the Italian adaptation of Nero Wolfe.
The episodes are based on the books, the fake thing is that Nero and Archie left New York and are living in Rome. A bit weird, but it's well done.

I love Game of Thrones! It is intense and stressful but I love it. My hubby has read all of the books and is great about giving me background that helps my understanding of the show. He won't give me any spoilers though which drives me crazy! After how the first season ended (don't worry, no spoilers from me either :), I feel I need to be more prepared to deal with the serious emotional turmoil of the plot twists.

I totally agree with you about Peter as Tyrion. He has the best lines on that show. So great!

message 14: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (viv001) | 606 comments A bit out there, but I am a big opera fan (I am an amateur classical singer) and I love spending hours on YouTube (the vortex) watching videos of the great divas singing.

I spent hours watching Joan Sutherland sing the mad scene of Lucia di Lammermoor at different stages of her career.

Vivian, I wish I could get into opera, but it is so expensive to go to in this town! Though they do have the movie broadcasts of operas, which I haven't gone to (and should).

I think it's so cool that you're a singer. My voice makes children cry and dogs howl.

They do the boob thing just to prove they're HBO, I think :)

I started watching Game of Thrones during repeats/on demand, and got caught up for this season (though, don't spoil me, I'm not caught up yet, that's what I'll be doing this weekend.)

Does it hurt that I haven't read the books?

Anne, there was a GREAT interview with Peter Dinklage in the Times about a couple of weeks ago. He is awesome.

No, truly, I hate G. R. R. Martin's writing style. I am very visceral about books. I am a book lover and I really get invested in my reading; with me is a love or hate relationship and Mr. Martin's style was annoying! I think the script writers are doing marvels with the poor material they have. I tried reading the books and abandoned them. They irked me.

:D

I sound like a snob.

Go to your local University I am sure they have a music program doing free or very accessible operas. Sometimes they put out some nice things. Last year my local university did a production of Così fan Tutte. It was interesting to see it in a modern setting, and the students were great!

Reggie Has anyone subscribed to Classicaltv.com ? It looks like a good idea. It looks like streaming performing arts on-line for cheap. They don't have many ballets available.

I fell in love with ballet when I saw Mikhail Baryshnikov perform on PBC. Fangirl squeee, sigh and OMG!!!!

Hey, this thread sounds a lot of fun (although I watch awfully little TV nowadays)!

Anyway, few weeks ago my husband (who has a lot of time to watch television while I read...) found a hilarious British TV series called "Him and Her" that BBC Three describes as "anti-romantic comedy". I suppose the description fits all right, because the show is about a young couple, Becky and Steve, and their odd friends and even odder relatives. If you like crazy British humor - this is the series to watch! :) Too bad I don't know how to make a link to it - but here it is:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00tmyzz

And since Kari and mc were talking about the guy who played Boone on Lost, I just have to say that I thought that Josh Hollaway, who played Sayer, was absolutely gorgeous! So there - I said it. ;)

Hi from another passable soprano Smilie by GreenSmilies.com

I, too, love singing (in choirs, not solo!) and in fact I'm about to spend a big part of the weekend rehearsing for and performing Mendelssohn's Paulus.

Operas in their "real", mostly historic settings are very much the exception in Germany. This kind of production is generally regarded (not necessarily by the audience, mind you) as boring, oldfashioned and downright provincial, even in provincial opera houses of which there are lots in Germany.Smilie by GreenSmilies.comSmilie by GreenSmilies.comSmilie by GreenSmilies.com

The recent Tannhäuser production in Bayreuth featured a room with generators, tanks and gasometers, to a decidedly mixed reception.

For my last birthday my husband and I went to Glyndebourne to see Don Giovanni. It was a lovely production and I loved it. Glyndebourne is probably a little more traditional than Bayreuth but still Zerline looked/was dressed like Marilyn Monroe and Don Giovanni wore a tux.

Anne, I was so upset when it went to Starz, because I don't get that station (and my cable bill is high enough). I loved early Torchwood.

Lou, the whole Ianto thing broke my heart. Was there really a need to do that?

Hah! Hi back! :)

How interesting. I've been practicing this past month with my choir, we are singing Schubert's Mass in G and the Christ Lag in Todesbanden from Bach.

I have a recital in June, but I am singing something very modest for that one. Probably Vedrai Carino (I make a good Zerlina I've been told) or something like Caro Mio Ben.

Oh, here we get them still in the traditional settings unless they are a student production.

message 36: by mc (new)

mc | 1308 comments Rachel, it occurs to me that as much as Game of Thrones is the land of female frontal nudity, that Lost had a lock(e) on topless men. Seems fair.

Vivian (viv001) | 606 comments Lou wrote: "Battlestar Galactica had a good all around eye candy, even if not as revealing as HBO. HBO is soft porn half the time. "

Thank you, I quite agree. The thing I object the most is that it's only female nudity being paraded around, not male nudity. Someone actually told me that a mons venus was not genitalia and that it didn't compare to show a penis and a mons veneris, that in order to be genitalia it had to be a spread eagle sort of thing and that's why we saw female frontal nudity more often than male frontal nudity.

It annoyed me because if it weren't genitalia we would be allow to walk around sans clothing (in the US we have those indecent exposure laws) and show our montes veneris, but we can't. Call me a raging feminist, but I am for equal opportunity sex objectification, if you are going to show nudity, show nudity from both sexes.

Reggie Man, oh man, I keep thinking you all are WAY MORE intellectual than I am.

Well, you've thoroughly blown that OUT of the water. I can now confess to having Top Gear stored on my DVR as the ultimate in brainless entertainment. Oh, and those dudes on tv that blow stuff up just to see what it will do... for science of course.

I keep thinking...and they get PAID to do this???? How did they get this gig? I'll test drive that Ferrari, pick me!!! Pick me!!!

They are totally absurd.

Documentaries put me to sleep. I always have a few of them stored. I watch them if I'm strung out and have trouble going to sleep. I grew up watching them with the parental units.

I don't have HBO. Y'all aren't convincing me I need it either. =D

Enjoy your weekend all!!

message 49: by mc (new)

mc | 1308 comments Guilty secret? I'm watching Lockup right now (for the non-Americans, it's a kind of documentary series about inmates in different prisons).

It's sobering to see how people end up in these situations, very sad to see how often 'once in' means never truly getting out of the system, and seriously inspiring to see those who are able to create a new and better life for themselves.
