This thread is for readers to ask for recommendations on authors based on authors they have read and enjoyed.

For example:

If I like Matthew Reilly, who would you recommend next?

Jody (jodychesen) | 16 comments Lady D: Have you read David Gibbins? I just started his Jack Howard series and I'm enjoying it...seems similar to Reilly (whose books I loved).

I have the same question though....who should I read next?

No I haven't, Jody. I'll check him out.

I think The Gray Man sort of reminds me of Schofield in that Greaney puts his character in some really sticky situations and you see how he manages to get out of them.

Jody (jodychesen) | 16 comments Thanks Lady D!
The Gray Man is on my TBR list so hopefully I'll get to Greaney soon....

Enjoy, Jody!

Josh (charlescooper) | 4 comments Need some recommendations peoples!

The kind of authors I like are Stephen King, Robert E Howard, Lee Child, Michael Crichton, Ben Aaronovitch (If you haven't read him, then go do so!! Very good books), and Michael Grant of the Gone series.

Please no Matthew Reilly suggestions, I tried to like his work but it doesn't sit well with me. :(

Travis (travistousant) | 362 comments For a mix of science adventure action and a bit of history tied together I would have to say James Rollins is worth a go. Also I looked at your page and see quite a bit of Tom Clancy which I may suggest a new author I am trying and so far enjoying with One Rough Man by Brad Taylor. That's all I got Josh but. There are many other members here with greaterknowledge than myself.

Stephan Hunter's series with Bob Lee Swager. Besides Jack Reaher by Lee Child there is none better imho. In fact the movie Shooter with Mark Walberg was base on one his books

There is no better action-thriller writing going these days than Stephen Hunter and his Swagger series is fantastic (with "Pale Horse Coming" being my favorite). Lee Child's Jack Reacher series is good ... but I think Swagger gives you more bang for the buck. Both series are well worth reading though.

I've heard good things about Swagger, and the movie Shooter is really good. I need to start this series soon.

Hey Mark, I love all the Swagger stories by Stephen Hunter also. And one of my favorites is Pale Horse Coming (Earl Swagger, #2) by Stephen Hunter which features Swagger's father: Earl. Love that series.

If you are looking for a new writer to check out I would suggest Simon Kernick. I read Siege by Simon Kernick a week or so ago and LOVED it. Now I am reading another Kernick thriller: Stay Alive by Simon Kernick , and loving this one as well. I will probably read a Simon Kernick book at least one per month for the next several months.

Vaelin | 0 comments I just started reading The Gray Man this week and am 30% into it and enjoying it immensely....there have been no filler chapters but also not too balls to the wall like with say Ice Station.....if it keeps up like this I will read the rest in the series and makes me excited for the stuff Greaney wrote with the late T. Clancy

Dave, best to start with the first Bobby Lee Swagger book or can they be read in any order>?

message 14: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I read the Swagger books in published order which is not chronological. I liked them that way. There's a discussion of the reading order here:
http://www.stephenhunter.net/faq.html

One guy makes a good point that if not read in published order, some events won't make sense since there are flashbacks & other time jumps in several novels.

Brian January (brianjanuary) | 28 comments You might want to try Andy McDermott (I like him because we write in the same vein--lol!). It's pretty much straight A/A, fun to read!

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) Can't help. Never heard of any of these names. But I actually saw three commuters reading Stephen King--in paperback! on the train this week.

message 17: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I've been really impressed by Thomas Perry lately. Strip might be my favorite so far.

message 18: by Feliks (new)

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) Yah! Didn't we just read one of his in this group?

message 19: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Yes, Metzger's Dog. It was excellent, too. I'm listening to Pursuit right now. I've also read the first two of his Butcher's Boy series & the first of his Jane Whitefield series. The latter wasn't one of his best, but still far better than many of the more popular authors, IMO. His biggest problem is that he writes so well & gets so much right that when he goofs, it's far more obvious to me. He sets my expectations too high.

Justin Bob lee swagger books are great. Also the series with his dad Earl Swagger. The first is Hot Springs
