June is......Page to Screen month! You can talk about books on your shelf that have been made into movies/TV shows. If you want to watch the movie/TV show this month as well, you can participate in the mini-challenge and talk about the book vs. the movie in the mini-challenge thread (or here....it doesn't really matter). You don't have to actually watch the movie to participate in the theme read this month.

On June 1st, I'll post a giveaway on my blog for everyone that completes the mini challenge of reading the book AND watching the movies. The giveaway will be a book and a movie set. I think I'll have a poll to see which book and movie you guys would want to win :)

Now I've got to look at my shelf and see which of my dusty books have been made into movies...

Well, there are several books on my list for this month that have been made into movies (either for the big screen or for television:
On the Beach - Nevil Shute
Small Island - Andrea Levy
A Room with a View - E M Forster
Washington Square - Henry James
All the Pretty Horses - Cormac McCarthy
Their Eyes Were Watching God - Zora Neale Hurston

As for June .... that's a little too far out for me to be certain (though the last two on the list above are for my F2F book group meetings in June, so I suppose I could put them off long enough to get to them in June.

Question - do they have to be Movies? Can we read them if they were one-off TV adaptations (like the BBC is wont to do)? I ask as I have a few that could fit (The Mystery of Edwin Drood & North and South being two).

If not I could always bump The Phantom of the Opera and/or Les Misérables up my list :D

No they don't have to be movies. I forgot to mention that in the intro post (editing now). TV shows totally count too - that's why I called the challenge page to screen because I wanted to include both.

I was at B&N yesterday, and picked up the excellent movie The Children's Hour, starring Audrey Hepburn and Shirley Maclaine, so my dusty book for the month will be the play written by Lillian Hellman.

Well this is good! I'll be able to knock out the other two LotR books next month, after I read the first for this month. (:

Great theme, I have a ton that fit it, but don't know how many are also dusty books. Will have to figure it out in these upcoming weeks ...

Hmmm...this could be a very good excuse to make my husband watch Interview with the Vampire with me (again!:) Or perhaps it's time for Three Musketeers???? Fun Fun Fun theme! Thanks Jessica! Now...my only hope is to find time for the rest of this month to finish the other two I'm in the middle of! :)

Hmmm... Atonement, Cranford, The Duchess, or The Other Boleyn Girl? Decisions, decisions...

Oooo I was captivated by "The Other Boleyn Girl"....but then I'm usually captivated by anything that has to do with the whole Henry the VIII scene! (My boys can't stand when we get there in history...we always spend extra time:)

It's ok...it's kinda fun to be annoying some days:) I say go for it, even though...I didn't think your opinion was annoying at all! (you might have to try harder :) LOL! :) (Honestly I don't even know the other titles except Atonement...and that movie looked incredibly boring to me..but I don't have a REAL opinion since I've neither seen the movie or read the book...:)

I've seen all four of those movies (although Cranford is really a miniseries), but I've only read Cranford. I had The Other Boleyn Girl as a TBR, but to be honest, I got rid of it after seeing the movie because the historical inaccuracies drove me crazy. I decided that historical fiction was not for me! I didn't care much for the movie of Atonement; The Duchess was ok. Cranford is certainly not as dramatic as the other three! But it is a sweet book; just be aware that the series was based on multiple works by Gaskell, of which Cranford is only one.

Ooooh... I'll have to look around... no, duh... two of the books already on my challenge qualify. Possession and Stardust. Sounds like a plan!

I know what you mean...everytime I see what someone else is reading, it sounds fun...and I forget, I've got my own list I NEED to work on! :) Have no idea what Possession is, but Stardust was fun! ;) (the movie anyhow...didn't even know it was a book! :)

I've only read one book by Neil Gaiman and it was amazing (The Graveyard Book). I'll bet Stardust is good too :)

I'm looking at my Dusty list and none of them have been made into movies! Almost all of them are non-fiction since that's my least favorite genre. Unless there's a movie about the Origin of Species??

There was a film recently called Creation which is about Charles Darwin's struggles with his theories. It's quite good.

Yay! Interview With the Vampire just came in at the digital library! (I don't even have to go anywhere to pick it up....) I may have trouble waiting until June to start this one! Finally, I'm really EXCITED about starting a book! (I've enjoyed the others... but I'm chomping at the bit to *sink my teeth* into another vampire book! Pun intended! Hahah! :) A big woot woot for page to screen month! (Ok, now I have to go finish my semi-interseting non-fiction history book I'm reading)

D - Oh cool! I didn't know they made a movie about Charles Darwin. I'm going to watch it even if I don't have time to read Origin of Species yet :)

I am planning to finish Neverwhere by Neil Gayman, already saw the screen adaptation- it was not too great, but I did not expect much, so no whining here. Book is wonderful though, highly recommend.

Pride and Prejudice... hmmppphh... the only thing that have been made into movie... :( or else i 'll have to reread... :(

So far, my favorite Jane Austen! Hope you like it:) . . . and you have so many choices on the 'screen' part of it! (I have to admit, I like the Colin Firth one the best!:) But, I haven't seen the all...yet!

I like the Colin Firth miniseries best, too! Of course, with six episodes, they could afford to get more of the story in (and it was written by Andrew Davies, my favorite period piece screenwriter - he also wrote the Middlemarch I just watched, and many others). I also have a BBC presentation from the 80s or 90s (in a set of all the Austen novels), and of course the old movie starring Laurence Olivier - if you watch that one, you can complain afterwards about the inaccuracies, but it is still a very fun movie.

I preferred the 2005 P&P! Admittedly, it was the reason I wanted to read it to begin with, but everything about it was just perfect in my eyes. (:

Thalia, I liked the Kiera Knightly P&P as well - except the ending. the ending bugged me to no end, but the rest of the movie was perfect! :) The BBC mini-series is awesome.

I spent YEARS not knowing there was another scene at the end with Darcy and Elizabeth...My sister-in-law watched it with me and was like, "Wait...there's another scene." And I just about died!

I don't know why but it makes me cringe when they are making out at the very end. It's drastically different from the book where it kind of gives you an epilogue of what happens to everyone. It's probably not that bad - just so different from the book that I wasn't expecting it.

Hahah, I wouldn't call it "making out"! (; But I waited all movie for that kiss! Not knowing about its existence for so long, I was disappointed thinking the movie ended with her dad saying it was okay to marry Darcy. I felt so unfulfilled!

atonement will anger you ... it's definitely not boring.

PHew! Finished Interview with the Vampire...won't get to watching the film until we're back from vacation:) I enjoyed it....but...it had some places where it left me lacking...(and I supposed that is Miss Stephenie Meyer's fault!:)

I found the film light years better than the book - Neil Jordan genius and plenty of eye candy!

I liked the Keira Knightly P&P, too. I've even seen a Bollywood version called Bride and Prejudice that was fun. I also vaguely recall seeing one set in current times involving a bunch of Christian kids, which didn't impress me.

Just finished A Room with a View by E M Forster.

Starting Henry James's Washington Square.

Both have been made into movies.

Oh having drifted away from my 'dusty' books lately I'm back.

Going to dust off Empire of the Sun by JG Ballard. This also covers me for Page to Screen month. Hoorah.

Ah, I've heard of this book and been intrigued by it but never found out much more about it - must do research ;D

Currently listening to the audio book of Corman McCarthy's All the Pretty Horses, which was made into a movie starring Matt Damon and Penelope Cruz.

Finished Thornton Wilder's The Bridge of San Luis Rey ... I've never seen the movie, but from reviews I'm thinking it was not a very good adaptation.

Finished Empire of the Sun. Very good book. It's the only JG Ballard novel I've read and was surprised to read that it's quite autobiographical.

The novel is very moving and quite startling at times. Think I'll definitely be reading more Ballard.

I've never watched the movie but might have to seek it out now.

I read "The Graveyard Book," too. Good book! I have Neverwhere on my Nook - it was a Daily Find a few months back - so I guess that one will be on the dusty shelf soon enough! :)

I know it's funny...:) but it's totally making me sad! I'm starting to feel so guilty. . . . that I haven't given these people who I'm snaggin' free books from the time to get them read yet, to leave reviews! Although...it's propelling me a bit faster through my dusty reads...in order to be able to start the load...and I do mean LOAD that I have on my kindle! I've promised myself . . .no more free downloads until I read what I have (and I re-promise myself again every day when I break that promise for just one more book that looks good..that might not be free tomorrow! :) I'm insufferable! ;)
