The Story Thus Far: We first learn about the mission to destroy the Marker Shipyards thought to be breeding jukors. Chaz suspects some sort of telepathic connection between Sully and Ren. Ren claims not to be a telepath, but his empath abilities are still present. Ren "sees" Chaz. New plan to get in-system is to commandeer the Meritorius, which happens to by Chaz's old command.

Some thoughts for discussion. Feel free to add your own!

I'm glad their departure from Moabar did not end up being too easy. Chaz kept thinking to herself "this is too easy," and I was worried it was going to end up being unimportant. It seems like Sinclair definitely has a hold on her foreshadowing, so I'm excited to see what else comes to fruition.

I'm really enjoying Ren's character and am really anxious to see how he develops. My favorite scene so far is the lead up to the card game in which Chaz's fear and Sully's repressed anger seem to bring out the soul-stealing side of Ren. I'm also curious about the forehead touch between Ren and Chaz after he "sees" her. Chaz feels "a strange calmness" at this gesture and it makes me wonder if this calming sensation is something Ren can do, or if it's just a general warmth and comfort she feels from gaining his friendship.

To throw a little theory-crafting out there... I'm starting to wonder if Chaz' brother Thad is behind (or involved in) the jukor breeding.

Lindsay (roguefire) | 85 comments Oooo, nice thought about Chaz' brother! Didn't think about that one, though for him being mentioned a bit already, I assumed he would show up if not in this book, then in the series somewhere.

I'm sure I'm the only one, but while reading this book, I'm picturing the movie Titan A.E. constantly for some reason. Or my imagination is in animation mode! LOL

OMG Yes! I kept thinking of Titan AE the whole time. Sadly, as wrong as it is, I kept picturing Drogue as Gune.

Izzy (lepetitegeneral) | 48 comments Oo I didn't think about it being Chaz's brother maybe. That would be awesome.

I agree the foreshadowing in this book was has been AMAZING. I love when a book does that well.

Also very happy the escape wasn't easy and this is obviously going to be a big part of the book. Curious to see about how the festival stuff goes.

Lisa | 68 comments Chapter 4-6 passed really quickly in an engaging mix of tension, fear, and Sully being a creep. At the end of chapter 6 where you find out they're going to get back Chazs ship is pure awesome.

Still don't like Sully even after a glimpse of his soft gooey centre. The bit where he pounced on Chaz and it was all a big misunderstanding made me dislike his character more.. If he is meant to be the fun loving carefree rogue then why is he so bad at social interactions and reading social cues?? And when will he stop with invading people's personal space... I can't see why Chaz will fall for him, if every time he unexpectedly approaches her, she freaks out inside her head.

I disagree, the foreshadowing has been clunky and poorly written. How many times did she say "This is to easy?" over and over again? That is not "showing" in writing, it is "telling" us that it is too easy and that something is going to happen. I just got annoyed that I had to wait for whatever it was to happen, because I knew it was coming in such an obvious way.

Also, I was disappointed in their commandeering of the ship, they barely explained how they were going to do it. Definitely not very sci-fi storytelling.

I couldn't care less what happens to Chaz & Sully, but Ren is fascinating. While I am not a fan of the writing style, I do like how we are doled out information about Ren slowly, though I wish the author had done a better job with characterizing his race as "scary" at first.

Maybe I am tearing this apart more than I should, since I have never read sci-fi romance. What I accept in historical romance seems excruciating in sci-fi.

Try being a science-fiction reader seeing this plot or the execution thereof receive compliments (shudder). I can only manage a chapter at a time before I need to wash my brain out with another book.

You've got a point there though - we forgive so much by way of character flaws because the time period isn't supposed to be as sophisticated as our own... so a swooning heroine and an obsidian-eyed Tarzan
on a space station leave you wondering why technology progressed while personalities fled back to Regency London.

Braiding Ren's hair should have led to the smut-to-end-all-smut. He reads & responds to some of what you're feeling and can breathe through his gills if you're in the tub and he goes "below deck" for as long as it takes. What does Skeevy Sully have that can compete with that?

This totally cracked me up. You are so right! And Regency London is actually exactly to what I was referring.

Also, I have to apologize for a spelling error in my previous post. I promise I know the different between "to" and "too"

jillz (jillzz) I briefly wondered if there was going to be sexy time with Ren too after they braided each others hair! I had to check the book description again to make sure the male lead was Sully.

Still not liking Sully. I don't see handsome pirate/rogue. He seems kind of weasel-y to me(and now I'm picturing him as Mark Sheppard) (( http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0791968/ ))

I was also surprised they got held up on the space station and wondered if that was a set up for some smut but I haven't read any yet and they are about to execute their plan to hijack the Meritorious.

Michelle (deckfullojokers) | 16 comments I agree that I am not a fan of Sully. But as someone who has a hard time reading science fiction, I'm actually pleasantly surprised thus far that I understand what is going on and haven't been turned off by an info-dump of too much confusing science (I am not science-savvy). I know it's like diet science fiction, but for someone who has abandoned and then steered clear of the science fiction genre, I'm pleased.

Though it would be nice if Sully wasn't such a creeper.

Allie | 13 comments I guess I will be in the minority when I say Sully is growing on me. I don't quite know why. I think his choice to commandeer was more to get a rise out of Chaz than out of ease.

I am still interested in Ren the most, the "conversation" he had with Sully makes me sceptical of him. I like him but I feel like he is keeping secrets.

I feel like there is a lot of focus on braids so far, I keep thinking there is some symbolism that I can't see because I was never good at spotting those. Maybe I am just expecting to much, this is my first venture into the genre.

...except that Mark Sheppard has turned stealing the scene away from the leads into a freaking art form, so while his look would get him the role of Skeevy Sully, his acting should get him in there as Ren, if you know what I mean :)
