Thread Note: Please try to keep this discussion limited to chapters 7-9. Later chapters can be discussed in their own thread, but if you have to mention something about a later chapter please be sure to mark it as a spoiler!

The Story Thus Far: Sully drunkenly advances on Chaz, she protests. We learn about the empath ability to "see" emotions and people. We learn that Taka women are being used to breed the jukor and there are Taka men revolting against this. Chaz & co board the Meritorious.

I'm curious about why Chaz lacks self-confidence in relationships (other than it being a genre trope, lol). On page 99 she thinks "Sober...Sullivan wouldn't even notice someone like me." He's clearly flirting with her (although I could see her assuming he's just trying to add her to his 'list'), does she not see that? Who is "someone like her?" Does she just lack confidence or is there a darker side of her we haven't unearthed yet?

One of my favorite moments so far:

"An expensive play toy. It's different, so people want it. Then they get bored, look for something newer, better. I don't work that way."
A slow nod of a face badly in need of a shave. "I don't either."
I slipped my hand from under his, picked up the Stinger again. "There's much to be said for dependability. Reliability. Consistency...[she examines the Stinger]...It's not fancy. No Frills. But it will never, ever let me down."

Well played innuendo, definitely shows the clever side of our heroine.

The relationship between Ren and Sully continues to get interesting. With Ren's confirmed lack of telepathy perhaps he is just used to the subtleties of Sully's 'pattern?'

Izzy (lepetitegeneral) | 48 comments I enjoyed this set of chapters a lot. I think it was great how quickly we moved along in the story to getting on the ship (about 25%ish on kindle in).

I loved the conversation about guns between Sully and Chaz too.

Jes (tiaama) | 110 comments I thought the "he wouldn't even notice me" was out of character and out of place. He bloody well went to a penal planet and found you... uhmm I THINK he MAY HAVE noticed you...
I do love the build up of her sneaky ways of saying what she values most (honesty, reliability, consistency) but boy (as we learn later) can Sully NOT take the hint. Perhaps this was not only revealing of the character but a good dollop of foreshadowing? They are obviously hiding something...

Michelle (deckfullojokers) | 16 comments I feel like the romance is more contrived than the actual plot...

I think it was here that I began realizing the heavy repetition of 'rainbows'.

PointyEars42 | 476 comments They spent 3 years flirting whenever they saw each other while on the job & made out in a bar when not on the job. Office Romance!

Allie | 13 comments Man, here I was all worried I wouldn't finish the book before the end of the month because of how late I got it, but I am just blowing through this.

Sully is getting on my nerves. Why would you get drunk the night before a life or death mission? The petty battle of wits just makes me root more for Ren to get Chaz. There has been plenty opportunity for that relationship to be set up, but I don't think it is going to happen.

Jemma (starryeyedgrrl) | 34 comments This is where the book really started to get going for me, i got ironduke late so started this one late as a result but like Allie i'm whizzing through this now.
I think Sully is a big jerk, a gorgeous flirty jerk (my favourite kind) by the sounds of it, but a jerk never the less. TEAM REN!
