INSTRUCTIONS FOR THIS THREAD
This thread is for people to post links to cheap and free eBooks, generally under $5 USD as a rough guideline. These aren't necessarily recommendations, just a heads up about bargains we've spotted!

**AUTHORS - DO NOT POST YOUR BOOK PROMOTIONS HERE**
These posts will be removed.

Only post the basic details people need to know to decide whether or not to click the book link. Try to keep it short & sweet, so that people can browse easily.

Please use the GoodReads book title link in your post, and include which site the book is available at, along with the price. It's helpful to let people know key details like: if the sale has an end date, whether it's a short story instead of a novel, if there are format limitations etc. You don't need to link directly to the store as well, but you can if you like.

Remember that Amazon has country-specific sites, so you'll need to explain which site you're referring to (US, UK, Spain etc). You should also mention which currency you're talking about (eg $5 USD).

I'll kick this off with a couple of examples..
----------------------------------------------------

The Forever War by Joe Halderman, classic scifi novel.
Kindle ed. $4.95 USD at Amazon US.

House of Corruption by Erik Tavares, historical werewolf novel.
$2.99 USD in all major formats at Smashwords.

Ooooh, Amazon (US) is doing a 99c deal today on screen-adapted books, including I am Legend, The Day of the Triffids, Slaughterhouse-Five, Who Goes There? Seven Tales of Science-Fiction (The basis for John Carpenter's "The Thing", Red Alert (The basis of Dr Strangelove) and Midnight Cowboy.

They also have Make Room! Make Room!, the basis of Soylent Green, or as the cover spells it - "Solyent Green". Hmmm. If the cover is that badly proof-read, can you imagine what the rest of the book must look like?!

Wool Omnibus Edition by Hugh Howey -$5.99USD at AmazonUS.
Tags: post-apocalyptic, dystopian

It has just been leaked that 20thCentury Fox, with Ridley's Scott's "Scott Free" have won the rights to the series, and according to Hugh, there's another big announcement about to be made. Pretty awesome news for a self-published author.

I read the first one in the Wool series for a group read & loved it, and I've yet to see anyone I know give it a bad review.

Just came across this by chance, and I'm not quite sure what it is that grabbed me about it, but... hey! It's 99c on Amazon (US)!
The Slate Belt Compendium of Strange Events [Kindle Edition] by Brian Carroll
42 page novella
-tagline: "Improbable but printable stories from the Bangor Daily News". Hmmm. It just seems quirky enough to maybe work..

A story that plunges us into a world of terror from its beginning in 1212, during the French crusades, until its present-day ending. ($2.99 on Amazon for the kindle)

Just got an ereaderiq alert that Act One by Nancy Kress is free today on Amazon (US): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003...

Tom Lichtenberg I want to recommend these three free stories by Zvi Zaks. Each of them is a very well executed take on an original idea - a dog who can talk but is still just a dog, an advertising agency struggling with a law that requires them to be truthful, and a chip implant that collects a 'pleasure tax' on people. Witty, brilliant and fun.

That reminds me too, all of Cory Doctorow's novels, essays and short stories are available for free download on a huge range of (fan-sourced) formats, under a Creative Commons license here: http://craphound.com/?cat=5

I highly recommend the 3 most recent novels, and my BF has enjoyed the essays.

I don't know how many others are following Karen's hilarious monster porn reviews (which I believe should be compulsory reading on here!), but the author of My Robot Body Will Make You Cum has posted a Smashwords coupon code for a free copy. Just saw this on Amazon (US) for $4.95, which is lucky, since that's be about my ceiling price for something like this: Sh*t My Dad Says
I followed the Twitter account at the time, and it was hilarious in that context. I can't imagine how it will translate in a book format, but we'll see.

Sidenote: To find the book on GR, you need to search for "sh*t" rather then "shit". If you search for "shit dad", you'll only find this book: Shit My Dad (Never) Says by "Oscar Wilde". It looks like a REALLY shitty idea for a book. What's kinda funny though, is that most of the GR reviews appear to be from people who have mistaken this for the real "Shit My Dad Says".

Not an ebook, but wasn't sure where else to put this. A very funny short satire from Julian Gough that will have to be changed in 4 days, due to legal concerns about Apple related content. Here's the original until then: The iHole (original Apple Flavour).

Edited to say the iHole story has been pulled from the above link. However Gough provides a link to a different short story that is also very good here: The Great Hargeisa Goat Bubble.

Avery Delany (redrocketpanda) Don't know if anybody would be interested.

There's a series of free ebooks in the Star Wars series from the Old Republic era that you can download here Just scroll down and click on the links for each book and it's underneath the article.

And if you have a kindle there's obviously the free ebook store on the amazon kindle website that has old classics like Pride and Prejudice and Dracula.

message 28: by Avery (new)

Avery Delany (redrocketpanda) Also, in case people weren't aware, there's also this!

It's a list of ebooks available on the goodreads website and there are some actually quite neat finds on it. From what I can see the majority of them are in languages other than English and some are only available to read online. But I found some things I find quite cool and can't wait to get stuck into.

1. Zombicorns by John Green
2. Harry Potter: The Prequel is also on there, which is something I didn't know even existed until now! I feel like a complete failure of a fan for that.
3. Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality is an ongoing fanfiction, from what I gathered on the goodreads page and has quite good reviews.

All of which are available for free ebook download!

I just got this for $1.81 on Amazon US:
The 2013 Voiceless Anthology
J.M. Coetzee heads the selection panel. And it supports respect for animals! :)

This is the blurb from Booktopia:
"A collection of the best entries in the inaugural Voiceless Writing Prize, designed to recognise the best Australian short fiction and non-fiction that has at its heart the place of animals in the world we have made.

Voiceless is an Australian think tank promoting respect and compassion for animals. Part of that endeavour is the awarding of the Voiceless Writing Prize sponsored by Australian Ethical Investment. With a prize pool of over $20,000 it is one of the largest awards of its kind in Australia. Judged by an expert panel, the prize is awarded for Australian writing which advances the public's understanding of animal sentience, human-animal relationships and the ethical treatment of animals. The 2013 Voiceless Anthology presents the very best of the bounty of entries received for this year's awards."

I know there are a few members here interested in gender issues, cross-cultural stuff, lingustics, sci-fi etc. The same eReaderIQ email alert included this free short novella: Looking Through Lace by Ruth Nestvold

"As the only woman on the first contact team, xenolinguist Toni Donato expected her assignment on Christmas would be to analyze the secret women's language -- but then the chief linguist begins to sabotage her work. What is behind it? Why do the men and women have separate languages in the first place? What Toni learns turns everything she thought they knew on its head.

Originally published in Asimov's in 2003, "Looking Through Lace" was a finalist for the Tiptree and Sturgeon awards. The Italian translation won the Premio Italia for best work of speculative fiction in translation in 2007."

The Autobiography of My Mother by Jamaica Kincaid - $3.99
http://bookbub.com/deals/2013/01/03/t...

message 49: by Dara (new)

Dara | 8 comments Someone recently introduced me to www.Bookbub.com for e-books. It is a website, when you sign up it asks for your email address only, no other personal information. Then you answer a series of questions, what type of ereader you have (Nook, Kindle, Sony...all kinds listed) and where you purchase books from and what genre's/type of books you are interested in. Then every day you will get an email with anywhere from 1-4 books that can be purchased very cheap (most expensive I have seen is $3.99) or even free from the seller you purchase from. Example, I have a Nook and get my books primarily from Barnes and Noble. When I see a book I am interested in on the email, I click on it and it takes me to the Barnes and Noble site where I can download the book for whatever the price is. Often they are free or $1.99, but like I said I have seen them as high as $3.99 (though that is unusual.) And they are all books in the genre's you selected. I have seen alot of the paranormal romance (not my thing...but I get it because of my interest in romance and contemporary fiction.) Definitely worth checking out. I have downloaded several books through this site. It basically searches for you and alerts you to deals available.

The one thing I will recommend, if you get an offer for a deal, act on it right away. Sometimes they only last a day and if you go back and try to get it, it is no longer at the special price.
