Sarah (booksandbosox) | 108 comments i'm wondering if the editor of an anthology who is listed as a GRA can be claimed as such. specifically, i'm thinking of reading Poe's Children: The New Horror: An Anthology by Peter Straub for Task 30.8, option A1. straub is listed as a GRA, so i wondered if i could claim him. i'll still read the book either way, just curious!

Yes, you can claim him for a GRA ticket.

Coralie Does anyone have any help ideas for finding books with cover options when you do most of your reading through the library?
I have tried looking at the cover pictures they sometimes have on the catalog only to discover when I get the book that the cover is completely different.
When I go to the library all I see is rows of spines so I need to take the books out of the shelves to check the covers (you can't even judge the colour by the spine) which is time consuming and then when I finally find books with covers that satisfy the conditions I get them home to find the Australian covers are not on Goodreads and I have to start again.

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments we can always add the australian covers so that they are on goodreads - that is relatively easy to do - most of the time, I use the listopia - find a list of potential books that are interesting/fit the task and then go to the library and hopefully one or more on the list will be available/work

What Dee said. It's not a big deal to add cover art or even another edition of a book! Go over to this thread: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/3... and you'll see a bunch of people asking the librarians in this group to update page numbers, cover art, add new editions, etc. If you can find a picture of your cover art on the internet and provide a link to it along with the ISBN, that's really all we need! Super simple!

Sheila (sheilaj) | 2221 comments I had a question about graphic novels. I'm a big fan of the TV show Castle and ordered a book from the library supposedly written by the fictional character and it turned out to be a graphic novel. This is a new medium to me at least since age 8. Will this book be allowed in the SRC ?

Thanks

Sassafrass (sass-a-frass) | 891 comments For the ebooks verification. Those lines # change and sometimes can change minute to minute. Do we use the line # at the time it was approved or at the time of posting or would you rather us use the post # in the verification thread?

You can use the post # or the line number when it was approved. If you use a line number, I will at least know the general vicinity. Dealing with the ebook only posts is a lot of extra work, both in terms of the work DLMRose has to do in researching the books and in terms of verifying that the books have been approved, so we're trying to find some way to make this process less of a time consuming pain.

Coco Kimura Hello. Quick question: I started a book during the Spring challange (less than 500 pages) but never finished it (only got through a third of it). If I start again from the beginning can I count it for the Summer challenge?

Thanks!

yes, if you start all over again, it's no different than a re-read, which is allowed unless a task specifically prohibits it.

No problem, Sandy. I just wanted to know which would be easier. I'll do whatever I will have to do to lessen the work for you guys!

Maria Jo | 234 comments Can I use The Invention of Hugo Cabret to claim a big book ticket? It has over 500 pages, but many of those are full-page illustrations.

Kristina Simon (kristinasimon) | 11205 comments Maria wrote: "Can I use The Invention of Hugo Cabret to claim a big book ticket? It has over 500 pages, but many of those are full-page illustrations."

Big Book tickets reward participants who read longer books with an opportunity to create a task. The idea here is that someone has done more than is required for the actual task, and to provide some incentive for people to read longer and more time consuming books.

If you feel that a book that meets the Big Book page limits has taken extra time and effort to read, then that book is worthy of that opportunity and you may elect to claim a ticket. Claiming Big Book tickets is optional.

Kathy G. | 1931 comments Moderators,
I had someone wanting to use
The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle
for a 30.3 task. It does say YA lower down
on the genre list-- but it is mostly shelved as
a children's book.
What would be your ruling on this book?
Thanks for the help.

It's certainly a children's book, but I don't think it falls within the general SRC rule about "young reader books" - big print, big margins, simple vocabulary, early reader accomodations.

However, task creators can certainly limit the tasks beyond the general SRC rules, with requirements like "no rereads," and you are welcome to disallow the use of children's books for your task.

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments I have a question for our mods since I just saw the readerboard at the midpoint - what happens where there are 2 people who don't have tasks in this challenge, who are tied for the highest score at the midpoint? 2 50 pointers?

The first person to post is given the opportunity to create the task.

Coralie I consider myself very lucky. If I hadn't had to go out, I would have waited to post and Mrs Soule would have got there before me.
