0.5's of a book

I don't mind the 13.5 or the 4.5 books of a series. I find them enjoyable but I don't think I've ever read one that was essential to a series.
I do hate paying for such a small book though!.
It's the 0.5's that I hate. Why on earth do they even bother with prequel's?. The first book in the series just becomes one giant spoiler.

I never bother to be honest. I think they are probably enjoyable, but the 0.5s are entirely useless!
Agreed!
I don't think I'll change my mind, but it's nice to hear your opinion!

0.5s can be unnessescary unless they really help you think of a character a different way.
I often don't read o.5/4.5s because lately a lot of them are eBooks and I don't know they're there until I finish the series. By then I find them sort of pointless.
If they aren't a full sized novel (or at least a novella) I don't buy them. Who wants to spend 3.99 on an 90 page story?
But that's just my 2 cents.
The best way to describe them is probably as the *in between* books in a series.
The best example I can think of is Father Mine: Zsadist and Bella's Story by J.R. Ward which is counted as book 6.5 of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. It's only available as an E-book and at only 90 pages long, it's significantly shorter than any of the other books in the series.
Heather, I think you have this in your to-read list!.

I do, but I didn't know what it was exactly other than I thought it was part of the series. Are these kinds of books common?
I agree about prequels because the Dark Hunter series has a prequel, Fantasy Lover which is a really good, needed, introduction ot the series.
However, they also have lots of little 'christmas specials' or 'world book day' intervals or random additions in the e-book format that I really will not pay to read.
They're probably enjoyable in their own right, but when they aren't necessary to the story, I don't feel like I miss out and I prefer a book that's got at least 200 pages so I can really get into it.
I know they're quite a few for the In Death series by J.D Robb and Sherrilyn Kenyon has a few. I've noticed it's a common theme for authors to publish them as e-books or on world book day like Derek Landy did for the Skulduggery Pleasant series.

I think they are becoming more and more popular as the E-book format gains popularity. I don't think it's necessary to read them.

I'm not sure I buy Fantasy Lover as a true prequel. It was published before the first book in the Dark Hunter series and I think it's only counted as a prequel because it makes no mention of the Dark Hunter mythology.

I'm asking this because I never, and I wonder if you felt like it was just unneseccary to read or whether you spend your time and read them.
Do you feel like you gain anything from it?
Personally it feels like a waste of time/money/effort because I never seem to miss anything when I don't read the little inbetween book and I have no intention of starting now.
What do you guys think?
