Danyiele Kibby (shikamaruluv) | 22 comments OK Im totally into books like Percy Jackson series, Harry Potter series, Alex Rider series and really anything that has adventure, fantasy, humour and horror even though I can do without the whole boy-girl romance thing (the love thing in Percy Jackson and Harry Potter books was something I can deal with but House of Night and Mortal Instruments love thingy was annoying at times). Please just put any book that you thought was awesome but nothing overly dramatic and romancey..Im kinda going through a fantasy age 10-16 stage but if the characters are older and there is no fantasy and more adventure stuff thats okay too.

That's much better. Now you're using your "inside voice".

Going Bovine looks fun!

Pam Funke | 15 comments The Secret Series by Pseudomonyous Bosch was pretty good. Also you might like Operation Dark Angel by Pam Funke.

message 8: by Lana (new)

Lana (LanaBells) What about Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials series? The first in the trilogy is The Golden Compass. The books are his response to The Chronicles of Narnia. Or, The Hunger Games trilogy?

I second the His Dark Materials recommendation. I'll also add The Chronicles of Amber, even though the characters are adults, I read it when I was around 13 without a problem. It's a great series that I would hate to see vanish for lack of current readership.

thx gonna try the amber and goblin one

Elise (Geordielass) | 171 comments How about Terry Pratchett? If you are particularly into YA at the moment, start with The Tiffany Aching YA sub-series - The Wee Free Men (Discworld, #30), A Hat Full of Sky, Wintersmith and I Shall Wear Midnight. If you like them, you could also try his Bromeliad trilogy Truckers, Diggers and Wings.

Howl's Moving Castle is fantastic (the film's good too!)

The Dark is Rising sequence is good (#2, #4 and #5 are the best; #1 reads like a prequal, almost, but is still worth reading) - Over Sea, Under Stone, The Dark Is Rising, Greenwitch, The Grey King and Silver on the Tree. In this case, though the film was vile!

Continuing the books later made into films theme The Sword in the Stone (just don't get the abridged version that this links to).

The Princess Bride is a must read for anyone too (hmm, yet another (brilliant) film - do they make all good fantasy YA books into films?)

It's a really obvious one, but have you read The Hobbit?

The Eagle Of The Ninth would be one to try if you are interested in a historic adventure rather than a fantasy one. A Traveller In Time might be worth a go too.

Ariie (ariiestotle) | 4 comments Sounds like you're on a YA kick! Here's some recommendations:

1. The Darkest Powers trilogy by Kelley Armstrong.
The Summoning, The Awakening and The Reckoning. I read it last year but I can't recall how romance-y it was, sorry! It's very fantasy-ish though. And also, the trilogy is kind of like a movie, really. Everything picks up right in the book after it, but for me it worked because I read them right after the other. I rated it four stars, but if I read it again that might be lowered to three. I dunno.

2. The Leviathan trilogy by Scott Westerfeld.
Leviathan, Behemoth, and Goliath. Definitely has some romance, but I promise you that it isn't overwhelming or anything. There's slang and stuff, but it's pretty easy to get comfortable with. I think it can get a little confusing at times, though. Oh, and the main girl is such a kickass character. I adore her.

3. Unwind by Neal Shusterman. Very interesting premise, and it doesn't disappoint. Well, at least it didn't disappoint me. :)

Oh, wait. I forgot that it's a series since I've only read the first book. There's Unwholly, then a third is coming out. I'm not sure if there's more. Maybe it's just a trilogy.

4. Maybe you'd like to give the Maze Runner series (James Dashner) a try? I don't think it's amazing or anything, but I did like it. -> The Maze Runner, The Scorch Trials and The Death Cure. Oh, and The Kill Order, but I haven't read that one yet.

5. The Gone series by Michael Grant.
Gone, Hunger, Lies, Plague, and Fear. (Book six is coming out next year. It's called Light :D) It's my favourite series. There's romance, but the horror and everything else overshadows that. The books are a little repetitive in the sense that every new book just throws a new and very big problem at the characters, and shows you how they get through it (or don't), but other than that, they're good. There's nothing here that's censored, and I'd list some of those things but then I'd be spoiling some stuff, hehe. The POVs also switch so you can get a sense of plenty of characters. (If you do end up reading this series and liking it, I'm telling you, Fear is the best book in the entire series. Swear. But then again, the ratings get higher as each book gets published.) There's tons of action in this series, which is why I love it so much. I never get bored.

Amashelle Runemarks

I may have mentioned this book before, but if you're looking for a good, funny, magical adventure story without a distracting romance, this is the book for you. Style of writing is similar to Harry Potter, adventure type is similar to Percy Jackson (except the main character is a girl, and it's the Norse pantheon sge has to deal with). I cannot stress enough how fantastic this book is. I read it twice in two weeks, then went and tracked down a copy for myself to keep.

Laszlo (steampunk) You said you liked the Percy Jackson series? You might know this,
but after the first series, a second series started with the Roman gods. The first book's name I can't remember, but the second book is called "The Son of Neptune".

Luíza | 1 comments Based on your tastes, I think you might like Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. It's a humorous take on the apocalypse, with a healthy dose of fantasy and almost no romance.

John Hancock (johngregoryhancock) | 41 comments Try Robin Hobb's Farseer Trilogy is one of the best things ever written, IMHO. you can't go wrong.
