Rachel (rachel652) | 17 comments I am dependent on my local library to get books in English (I live in Israel and the English section is good but limited).

I noticed today that there is an entire shelf of Tom Clancy books. I have never read any of his books, although I have heard that they are military thrillers with a lot of technical details.

Has anyone read him, and if so, what would you recommend?

I have to admit I have never read any Tom Clancy books, though I have seen movies based on some of them. :o)

Here is a Goodreads list of which of his books seem to be most popular. If you are going to give him a go, you might want to start with something towards the top of the list.

The movie of The Hunt for Red October was pretty good. :o)

Patriot Games is really good.

Kiana Davenport | 51 comments I think of Clancy as more of a 'man's author.' I mean, he doesn't write scenes of childbirth and single moms. But...he's an excellent writer.
You should read one of his book, just for the experience. Try Patriot Games, or the Hunt for Red October. I confess I saw the movies first, so I imagined Alec Baldwin and etc. in the roles. It actually enhanced the reading. Good luck!

See my blog about what makes good writing. 'EATING HER AFTERBIRTH'

Lori Baldi | 184 comments I have read just the big 2 books by Clancy: Patriot Games and the wonderful
The Hunt for Red October. Red October especially is much better than the movie although I love the movie too. Somehow the hero, Jack Ryan, breaks through the "man" barrier and just works well. I loved all of the techo speak about the submarines & warfare. I've read it 2 times. Patriot Games is very good as well but the other Clancy books I've tried haven't been completed. One of them dealt with nuclear war breaking out. Scared me too much!

Beth (techeditor) | 30 comments I read one and tried to read another. He's difficult. He's one of the rare authors whose movies based on his books are better than his books.
