SOS: Serious Overload of Series discussion

Hey guys, here's a buddy read thread for the 2nd in the Katherine "Kitty" Katt series, Alien Tango.

We will be starting this on August 13th.

Feel free to discuss and join in even if you've read the book already :)

I'm glad I found this thread! I'm looking forward to checking out the rest of this series.

I think the middle of August is best for me. I usually reserve the first week of each month to tackle any books of the month. But I can squeeze this one in whenever works for everyone. I don't mind reading a bit earlier or later than everyone else.

I hope you guys like it. I'm on 4th book and really like it. So far book 2 is my fav. :)

You guys are in for such a treat! I have sitting on my shelf at home right this moment. Hopefully Mr Randomizer will be kind this weekend and I can fit it in as my Bingo read.

I'm hoping to devote the beginning of August to Downside Ghosts (after the Lethal Rider buddy read). So the last half of the month would probably be better for me. But I also don't mind reading it before or after everyone else. .

Oh dear! Totally forgot about this buddy read while trying to schedule some others. I think I can still squeeze it in around the 13th or so though. Here I thought I was being good and not scheduling too many buddy reads for next month, and I've just realized I have four! And they are all such good series that I'm excited to continue them all. At least I'm not starting any new series. Right?

I'm going to be running behind on buddy reads this month. My mother-in-law passed away on Tuesday. She was 85 and had retired from work only a year and a half ago. She was a remarkable woman I honored to have known.

I probably won't be getting to this book until later in the month. Everyone else go ahead and I'll catch up when I can.

Thanks, Leah. I hope to have half her energy at that age. She actually only retired after a stroke forced the issue. Even so, only a few months ago she was talking about getting better so she could go back to work part time. She had been a research scientist for NIH, and wanted to help make sure her years of research were passed on to the right hands and not lost. If only everyone were so dedicated.

I love the humour in this series, like you mentioned. I also love the supermodel women aliens who only love men for their brains, not looks ;)

I finished up my book ( ) last night since I couldn't put it down, which means I'll be able to start this one tonight!

Sorry, but I think I'm going to have to back out of this buddy read. I read through chapter 16 (page 90), and Kitty is really irritating me. (view spoiler)[Why does she have to lust after every guy she sees? (I'm talking about Agent Kevin right now.) I wish she would just stick with Jeff. Isn't he awesome enough for her? I peeked ahead at some reviews, and this doesn't change in future books either.

Also, I'm tired of her mother trying to set her up with every guy who is interested in Kitty, which apparently is a lot of guys. (hide spoiler)]

It's also really weird that she refers to the other characters alternately by their first names or their last names. I got really confused in the first book, because I didn't realize Paul was the same person as Gower for a while. And shouldn't Kitty be thinking of Jeff not Martini?

Sorry! Once I start reading reviews and looking at reviews for future books, I know that means I'm done. I have too many other books in my TBR pile. : ) I hope you enjoy this one better than I did.

Oh wow, no problems Jean if it's not your cup of tea! I'm only on Chapter 5 at the moment. I read someone's review for the first one that said the first book tried too hard to be smart, cute and funny at the same time and I can see where she gets that, although it doesn't affect my enjoyment of the series.

Will you be stopping the book at that Chapter, or finishing it with us?

I'm not going to continue with the book or the series. I had a few issues with the first book, and I was hoping I could get past them, but I guess I can't. I think this is one of those polarizing series: You either love it or not. It's too bad. There were some things I did like. Maybe I need to read another book and then decide...

Yeah, I find that you need to be a certain mood to enjoy the light hearted humour in this one. I've just come off from reading some heavy books, including the Downside Ghosts series so I am welcoming this one.

Like you Jean, I'm kind of getting confused with the interchanging names and the different people in the team. I know Reader is the male model, Chris & Martini of course, not sure about Tim, Kevin, Gower. I think Tim is the pilot.

(view spoiler)[You're totally right about Kitty, she kind of reminds me of the 'love' objective in The Sims 2 where you have to bed as many people as possible, lol. Perhaps she's just geared that way, but judging from the fact how she's always drooling over Martini, it seems kind of unnecessary. As long as she doesn't go after Christopher again, I'll be fine with it.

Not sure about the parents getting involved over every single thing! Based on her relationship with them, it seems like she's quite dependent on them still. (hide spoiler)]

Yes, yes, and yes! I agree with everything you said. Chapter 14 really bugged me as well as constantly drooling over Jeff/Martini.

I'm taking a break and reading . (Yay! Finally!) I'll still follow this thread to see what you guys think. I'm bummed. I always look forward to these buddy reads; it's my favorite thing about Goodreads.

LOL! This is exactly how I've come to feel about Cat in the Night Huntress series! I'm so sick of hearing about how gorgeous Bones is and her constantly being distracted by wanting to have sex with him. And they've been together for years. Enough already.

But back to the book at hand, I still haven't started it, but the comments I've read (minus spoilers) are actually making me anxious to get to it so I can see how I feel about.

Christine, sorry to hear the sad news. Hope everyone in your family is coping OK.

Thanks, Sandra. I think the worse part was telling our children, but young ones are so resilient. Now we're just dealing with everything that has to be done afterward, which at least gives us something on which to focus our energy. My husband was the closest to her of her three sons (she actually lived next door to us), so it's going to be quite a while for him to adjust to no longer having her there and having to worry about her.

I totally know what you meant about Cat and Bones, I think that romance started to fizzle (view spoiler)[after they ironed out all their problems. (hide spoiler)] Also Bones reminded me too much of Spike from Buffy and he's not my type!

Anyway, I've just reached Chapter 34 (43%) and luckily there haven't been any instances of drooling after other men or gushing about Martini (or many instances anyhow). What I really like about this series is how it's supposedly set in the modern day but with aliens walking among us! I like the whole sci-fi descriptions of aliens and their technology, it really satisfies my inner nerd.

It's also really easy to pick up and read, the writing is sharp and witty. It's quite feel good compared to a lot of UF's out there (and a welcome change after reading the Downside Ghosts series!)

Hey ladies, sorry I've been a little MIA. I've reached Chapter 21 and I'm agreeing with all your comments.

Is Kitty just supposed to come across as ridiculously horny all the time? I can't say it makes her very likable, especially when Jeff is standing right there and she's lusting over someone else...

I do like Jeff still though. I like his worries over Kitty meeting his parents, though it's a little irritating how he views her as such a perfect gal when I just don't see her that way.

Totally agree about the interrogation scene. I thought it was ridiculous. They can read emotions and blur memories and instead they go with Kitty's horny acting? Not for me.

Finally, long rant, I don't find Kitty believable as a Commander in the organization. She just found out about the aliens and has no background in military, she can't fly a plane but somehow she is heading up the Airborne division? I think this would have been much more realistic if they made her an Airborne trainee or something. Also, it seems like the other characters listen to her a little bit too willingly - (view spoiler)[ in Chapter 21, Reader is arguing with the airport they are trying to land in, and she walks in and he just immediately allows her to take over? She has no experience and it's been made pretty clear that she has no idea what's going on! They don't even let her know the situation (it's classified), but she is helping run the show? Hi Leah, you're totally right about her coming across as horny all the time - I'm not sure where but there was a line confirming that exact fact. I see her as someone who is incredibly charasmatic which is how she's able to command other people and get them to do what she says willingly, but then again she wants to bed everyone as her natural instinct.

Jeff on the other hand does have his flaws, but it's sweet in a way. He's a bit too jealous and possessive and gets into a blinding rage too easily.

It's sort of refreshing having each character having their flaws and not completely perfect in every way. Some of these character flaws are annoying though, especially Kitty's hornyness.

I don't know how Kitty became a Commander either. Perhaps it was her super smarts in the last book that led her to bust that superbeing, and for some reason all those super sexy aliens didn't see what she saw. She's quick witted and quick thinking, and perhaps has a way with establishing rapport with others.

I'm hoping to finally start this tomorrow. I'm very curious to see what I think after reading everyone's comments. And it's killing me to not click on those spoilers!

My big problem with the first book was how she got promoted to Commander. And Jeann is right that Kitty is super charismatic and she has a different perspective on situations that the aliens don't have.

It was at the end of the first book. She helped take down the bad guy. Plus, she was really upset when one of the pilots died during the big fight. The aliens gave her the promotion and assigned the pilots to her since they felt such loyalty to her because she was upset. Something like that. Does anyone remember it better?

Just reached Chapter 46. I think I lost the plot between Chapter 43 and Chapter 46.Admittedly, I was drinking some Chamomile tea and my eyes got a bit droopy while I was reading. (view spoiler)[But where in the world did this alligators come from and what are they for?! Last I read they determined that the stalker was an A-C who worked in the building and then they were going after that security guard. I think I must have lost the plot shortly after. Now the alligator went after Kitty and she's really upset and getting comforted. (hide spoiler)]

Also does anyone notice that Martini is super insecure and jealous and possessive, like all the time? He's more tolerable than the Edwards and the Mr Grey's out there though but seriously you're a hot A-C whose got the girl, stop worrying! That being said, perhaps it's the Kitty effect again. She has so many men after her and she's surrounded by a bunch of handsome males, so whats a guy to do.

I'm feeling like a need a break from this myself. But I'm not far to the end, 58% of the way through.

Chapter 55 (view spoiler)[ NOT AGAIN *groans*. Kitty uses her sexuality yet again to apparently assist in the mission.

Besides her wicked sense of humour, her witty comments, her ballsy attitude and quick smarts, it seems like she uses her sexuality to her advantage to make up for the fact that she doesn't have a power.

What sort of mission has you rubbing up and making out with your ex just so you can capture the baddie? Seriously, wtf. (hide spoiler)]
