Watson is the perfect companion for Holmes. He 'has the great gift of silence, which makes him quite invaluable as a companion', as is said by Holmes. Also, he simply cannot resist coming with Holmes on all of his adventures, and helps him whenever possible. I love how they portrayed Watson in the movie. He is always trying to keep Holmes out of trouble, which he gets into A LOT. The movie was very well done. Jude Law did a fantastic job with Watson.

Oh hold on. I agree, Watson in the movie is excellent. But I don't like BBC Watson. :P I don't like what they're doing to Sherlock Holmes. It just wasn't meant to be modernised. And oh god I REALLY REALLY hate what they did to Irene Adler on BBC. I wanna slap someone for that.

Sadly anytime something is on the television they think it needs sex/romance. I guess for us silly girls. :P

I think that would be more interesting.

That's not true, and you're ignoring other sexualities by saying that.
I think Sherlock Holmes is asexual, though I guess it's possible that they would decide to portray him some other way.

I will say that I am American but that it is true that Americans can not make a show without romance/sex in it.

And I will end my rant there.

It premieres next Thursday, and I will definitely watch it to get a feel for where they may go with it.

Anyone know if its likely to be shown in the UK?
I love Martin Freeman as a modern day Watson. But for the Victorian Watson then I think David Burke as a younger Watson and Edward Hardwicke as an older one are the best.

He was fantastic as Holmes. Seemingly he kept extensive notes on Holmes from the books (his mannerisms, what he ate - pretty much everything) and was always on the look out for anything he felt wasn't being true to the character or the books.

I started out with mixed feelings about Martin Freeman as Watson, but I really like him now. He's done a good job with shaping his character. :) Holy muffins, I am dying for more BBC Sherlock... D:

I like Freeman, but I feel that his Watson is very bleak and jaded. He lacks the necessary heart to counter Holmes's coldness. If anyone fills that role, it's Molly and Mrs Hudson.
I watched one episode of Elementary (I need to catch up.) and found Liu's Watson pretty much a standard reluctant sidekick with far too much emotional baggage.
In my opinion, the Burke/Hardwicke duo is the best I've seen.
Yes, I completely agree about Law. :) Plus, I love how he's like Holmes's companion, and keeps him out of trouble when he's being reckless in his Holmes-y daze. XD
Molly has grown on me, too. At first I was just like Holmes, rolling my eyes and thinking about how annoyingly persistent she is, because he's SHERLOCK after all. You just can't do that with him. But now I appreciate her ability of put up with him and still care for him in her subtle, quiet way.
Yeah, I agree that Freeman is more leaning towards... human...and he can be rather impatient with Holmes's ways, like people usually are. But I think he shows that even though he doesn't quite get Sherlock, a part of him understands him more than most people and sees through his carefully-constructed emotional walls.
Mel needs to watch Elementary!!! :()

How come BBC Watson does not have a beard? :))

David Burke. I like David Burke the best. Edward Hardwicke is good, too, but David Burke is better :)
Oh. I was referring to Martin Freeman :) It would be funny though if he had one LOL
Sorry. LOL. Zoning out here. Haha. Soryy I didn't notice the reply. :))

The best thing about Watson is that he is the filter that we see Sherlock through. He is the narrater, blogger, etc...
As a doctor, he is a smart man in his own right. Sherlock would not suffer fools around him. I can't stand it when they Watson as an idiot. On this point I think Jude Law does the best.
