My sisters-in-law introduced me to this series. We play pinochle every week online and talk via Skype. They kept talking about this Roarke and Eve so I finally asked who they were. They were amazed that they hadn't talked about the books before with me. I had just gotten an eReader for Christmas and was looking for something to put on it. Well, I tried the first book and immediately went on the hunt for the next one. Next thing I knew it was three months later and I'd finished the whole series. That was about two years ago.

Dee Sauter (indeathaddict) | 1070 comments Let's see, I was working at a job that was very repetitive, and I was bored out of my mind. I started listening to audio tapes that I would get at the library. I saw that Robb was Nora Roberts, so I picked up an audio book, I think it was Immortal in Death. I fell in love with the book and for quite awhile I would pick out whatever books I could get at the library. It was only a couple of years ago that I reread the series in order. No matter, I love this series, whether it is in order or not.

message 3: by Jeanie (new)

Jeanie Jackson Picked up a couple at the library at different times. They seemed ok but I didn't even realize they were part of a series until I read the second one. Over the next year, I kept getting recommendations for the series so tried again. I loved the next book, and the next one and the next one. Have read the series in order at least 4 times except for the most recent. I am kind of glad that I didn't start any earlier than I did because now I have to wait between books. For a while it was just a matter of getting my hands on them.

message 4: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1038 comments My mom recommended them to me a while back (maybe 5 years?), but I didn't read one until I was doing a reading challenge last January (like 18 mo ago) and Naked in Death was one of VERY FEW books that fit a task I was trying to do. I was hooked from there! I DEVOURED the rest of the then-published books in about 3 months! ;)

message 5: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (ezepeze11) | 582 comments I was drawn to them by the myriad of colors on the shelf in Borders *sniffle* Good old Borders.

message 6: by Mo (new)

Mo | 23 comments Saw that a lot of my GR friends had given the series some good reviews I decided to try it. I didnt realise it was set in the future when I started as that would have been a definite offput for me .... and I only read one other Nora Roberts book that I did not like so I was sort of assuming that I would not like J.D. Robb also - how wrong was I?

message 7: by Mary (new)

Mary | 208 comments Well, I'm kind of late in the diskussion , but anyways... My Godmother has like hundreds of books by Nora Roberts and when I asked her to give me some more books of hers, she gave me Naked in Death and told me what a great book it is and how I would love it, but I didn't like what I read on the back of the cover and I gave it back without reading it... (what an IDIOT!) But later I read Remember When and found out how amazing the series are and asked my godmother to give me back the first book to read it and then of course followed all the others.... I'm so glad I didn't give up on the series, I would have lost so much....

Better late than never, Mary! This is an ongoing conversation. Cool story.

message 9: by Mary (new)

Mary | 208 comments Yeah, but I feel really stupid, you know??? Because even when my godmother insisted on me reading it I was so stubborn about it!Of course needless to say what I heard from her when I asked her to give me Naked in Death to read it! I still remember her lecturing me how she was right and all that! Ha ha, she reminds me of that every chance she gets!
But as you said better late that never! :)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15049 comments Mod
Listen, a friend gave me Naked in Death and it sat on my kitchen bookshelf for about 10 years! I passed it everyday. It wasn't until my sisters-in-law begged me to start the series that I gave it a try. I'd even forgotten I had the book...I bought the eBook and read it:)

message 11: by Mary (new)

Mary | 208 comments Ha ha! Really? Well, that actually, makes me feel a lot better!(does that make a bad person???) Thanks!

message 12: by Drz (new)

Drz | 17 comments I read lots of Nora Roberts books and read Remember When which has a Nora and Robb book in it.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15049 comments Mod
@Mary Nope! You're just not alone in this.

@Drz I've heard from quite a few that Remember When either led them to NR or the J. D. Robb books, which was probably the goal of doing this book at the time.

message 14: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1038 comments My mom recommended the series to me like 5 years before I actually picked the first one up... You aren't alone!

message 15: by Trisha (new)

Trisha | 6 comments Found Born in Death in a discount bin at school. Bought it to kill time. Was a little confused at first, didn't realize I was coming into the middle of a series, by the end i was hooked.

message 16: by Momreadstoomuch (new)

Momreadstoomuch I was asking my librarian for a mystery book with a kick ass heroine..She said well try this one and handed me Reality in Death. She said that someone told her they were good. I read it and then started at the beginning.

message 17: by Kerri (new)

Kerri Levine | 30 comments I don't remember exactly. I'm guessing that I was on a website that focuses on Nora Roberts books, and I learned about it there. Or, it could have been a cross reference on my library's website. Now that I'm thinking about it, that's more likely to have been it. Once I started, I was hooked, of course.

What is funny is that it was months before I realized that JD Robb was Nora Roberts. I have yet to finish a Nora Roberts book.

message 19: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (elizabeth1023) I started reading the series on a whim because one was on the bargain book table at B&N. I read it and loved it. When I went back to start at the beginning I realized I had actually started reading Naked in Death five years earlier, but couldn't get past the future setting and never went past chapter one. My friend still teases me that she tried to get me to read them earlier! It's all about the frame of mind you're in when you pick up a book sometimes.

message 20: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15049 comments Mod
I agree, Elizabeth. The paperback of [b]Naked in Death was given to me about 8 years ago! It sat on my kitchen bookshelf the whole time and I only noticed it last year....two years after I'd already bought the ebooks. I remember receiving it and thinking, "This isn't me." So wrong.

message 21: by Cate (last edited Jul 26, 2013 02:18PM) (new)

Cate (catemb) | 76 comments It was one Kindle daily deal... And the futuristic theme appealed to me as I wanted a change from the many historical novels I had just read. I thought "why not? " and got hooked.

message 22: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15049 comments Mod
Wow! Did you start from the beginning?

message 23: by Cate (new)

Cate (catemb) | 76 comments Yes, luckily I did. "Naked in Death" was only £0.99 that day. That was less than a month ago... And somehow, despite working full-time (and doing overtime) and being married, I am already up to book 8! Lol

message 24: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15049 comments Mod
Catherine, many of the members here plowed through the series at warp speed. You're among fellow addicts.

message 25: by Julia (new)

Julia (juliace) I am a HUGE Nora Roberts fan (have read everything she's written) and I knew that NR was JD Robb. I picked up NID @ Barnes & Noble, but once I got home I set it aside b/c the futuristic aspect just put me off. The book sat on my shelf for about 3 years. One day I had nothing to read, picked it up and I've been hooked ever since.

message 26: by Maggie (new)

Maggie | 1576 comments I think my 1st was Purity in Death. I hadn't read any any Nora at that point, was browsing the shelves at my library and ran across Purity and it sounded interesting. Read it and when I finished ran to Barnes and Noble and bought Naked and Glory. Been hooked on Nora and J.D. ever since!!

message 27: by Susan (new)

Susan My Mother was the manager of a bookstore. She handed me NID and said don't ask any questions just read it. Of course I love it. Then she told me it was Nora. That was way back at the beginning. I have all the original release copies in my bookcase.

message 28: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11210 comments Mod
Susan, I'm so envious!

I read all of Nora's books...every single one of them and then couldn't find anything else that I thought I wanted to read. A little research told me she was JD Robb but I, too, was turned off with the futuristic thing...just not into science fiction (LOL)..Sometime later, I picked NID back up and thought I might as well try it - I don't have anything else to read. The rest is history...hooked immediately!!

message 29: by Sheri (new)

Sheri Morell (smorell22) | 2165 comments I was not a big reader and in June of 2012 I moved to North carolina to be with my sister and her family. I started working but because i didn't have a car and because of my brothers work schedule i had to sit around work until i was able to be picked up or had to be dropped off early...I asked my sister to recommend a book so i would have something to do while i had to sit around and she told me about the series. Luckily for me she had the first three books. I read the first one and i was hooked. I couldn't put it down after that...That was August of last year..I managed to finished the series by the end of december

That's a great story, Sheri! You now owe your sister:)

message 31: by Sheri (new)

Sheri Morell (smorell22) | 2165 comments yes i do...and because of the in death series I am now an avid reader...I can't go a day without reading something and i owe a lot of that to her as well

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15049 comments Mod
That's an even better story!

message 33: by Quynh (new)

Quynh (quynh_o) | 1269 comments I think it was 2003, I should have been studying for finals but I was looking up Nora's books. Then I came across her pseudonym and immediately looked up all the In Death books released so far. At that time, it might have been Imitation. Went on eBay, bid on some lots then started reading in order (instead of reading my notes for exams lol) and the rest is history. :D

message 34: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15049 comments Mod
So, yours was a leap of faith that you'd like the series because it was written by Nora.

message 35: by Carly (new)

Carly (carmeer) | 6 comments I was shopping at the Friends of the Library books sale and I saw two J.D Robb books. I am having a hard time remembering which ones. I think they were Strangers in Death and Memory in Death. Since I was already a huge fan of Nora Roberts I had to buy them. I read them then starting reading the series in order.

message 36: by Michelle (new)

Michelle | 2650 comments Can't remember what year but i was a book exchange fan ( more because i earned pittance ) and having read all the Nora Roberts in the shop the store owner finally ask me if i had ever read j d Robb and that she was actually Nora Roberts gave me remember when. The rest is a winding tale of frustration of trying to read it in order and finally earning enough to start buying them in order. Also help that round about that time the started appearing everywhere for a bargain!
Must say i never actually thought of them as futuristic even through they are because its so subtle, yet not!

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15049 comments Mod
It's interesting how you both were determined to read this series in order when you started with books later in the series. Good for you!

message 38: by Michelle (new)

Michelle | 2650 comments Its that finding out things out of sequence. Or references that didn't make sense

message 39: by Quynh (new)

Quynh (quynh_o) | 1269 comments Of course I always have faith in Nora! :) The whole futuristic thing didn't make me hesitate, I just hoped she be able to make it believable, and she did. I was looking for the mystery/suspense element too since up to that time, I read more of that genre than romance (I read mainly NR for romance). I tried introducing the series to a few of my friends but only 1 or 2 stuck with it.

message 40: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15049 comments Mod
I remember balking at the first page when I saw it was set in the future but it ended up making the series more fun and interesting.

message 41: by Sara ♥ (last edited Jul 27, 2013 10:36AM) (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1038 comments I was reading Naked in Death for a book challenge, so I was determined to slog through despite the future setting and the fact that it was *shudder* a MYSTERY NOVEL. I knew my mom loved them, but we don't always agree... And then I fell in love... haha! And not JUST with Roarke!

Note: I still hate 99% of mystery novels though, fyi.

message 42: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15049 comments Mod
Lol! I love that YOU love this series and it's a genre you don't particularly care for:)

message 43: by Quynh (new)

Quynh (quynh_o) | 1269 comments Considering most crime novels are based in present time, it's refreshing that Nora can come up with different gadgets to make the future look interesting. I still remember as a kid that I wanted flying cars by 2000. Guess I'll have another 40-50 years to wait for that huh. Lol.

message 44: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11210 comments Mod
Funny you mention the gadgets, Quynh...I just asked that question on the NID Buddy Read...which of the gadgets would be your favorite? Weigh in on that thread...

message 45: by Kerri (new)

Kerri Levine | 30 comments I don't remember exactly when I started reading the ID series, but I do know how. I first read a NR, maybe 20 years ago, with the first book of the Quinn Brothers trilogy. A few years later, I picked up Jewels of the Sun, and realized they were both by NR, the obsession began. I read everything I could get my hands on. When I'd more or less exhausted the NR list, I learned about JDR and that they were one in the same. So, I picked up NakedID at the library, and the rest is history. ;)

message 46: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11210 comments Mod
Wow, Kerri...almost exactly like me. Exhausted the whole NR list and thought now what do I read?? Found ID - and must admit I put it off for awhile - but once I read NID...I was gone!

message 47: by Vicki (new)

Vicki | 47 comments The first NR for me was the NR/Robb combo book. (cant remember it's name right now) I liked the Robb section more so started watching for them. Along the way I discovered audio books and started listening to the series from there. I passed my paperbacks on to the local cafe free book exchange. They now have the whole series in hard back and paperback with sign out sheets.

For anyone thinking about audio. I feel that the audio is much better than reading. It is the first thing I recommend to anyone that likes mystery or romance.

message 48: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11210 comments Mod
Vicki, I've just finally managed to switch to audio with my reread of this series...just listened to Loyal in Death. After speeding the narrator up a little, I found I liked it. I still prefer reading as I tend to HL a lot and reading holds my attention better but can now do audio while riding or doing chores. Helps pass that time better!

message 49: by Melissa (new)

Melissa I was a pretty avid Nora Roberts reader and when I saw Remember When on the shelf and read the little blurb about Nora & JD sharing everything including a husband I had to pick it up. (on the off chance it was that Nora was one of those polygamist types :))

I loved the way the two books played off of each other and then a coworker saw me reading it and gave me all of her paperback books from the 1st book in the series up to Remember When and I haven't stopped reading them since!

message 50: by Carol (new)

Carol Burnside (carol_burnside) I got a free audio version of New York to Dallas at a writer's conference. That'll be my first taste of this series in audio. I'm hoping it appeals as it would be great to listen to a book while working out or doing chores.
