I read this a few years ago and it was okay for me. I didn't get the hype over it. Anyway, I found it at the library and will reread it and see if I missed something. Give me a few days to read it though. I got 5 other books from the library and I got 2 other rereads going too. Not too much at one time, eh?

I would like to do a reread, but I'm swamped. I have to say this is my favorite book tied with Jane Eyre. But I can see how it wouldn't necessarily work for everyone. Sometimes the hype can put you off a book. I also would say that when I did reread it, it stood up to my first impressions.
Starting reading this. It felt like I was reading it for the first time because I didn't remember much of it at all.
The prologue is very heart wrenching. Guaranteed to make me love the character, Sebastian. I simply cannot comprehend how people can treat a little boy in that manner. The cook was awesome. I liked how he made up his mind to be his own man. Forget trying to please other people. He learned that money was important and decided that was his goal in life. Bravo!

I loved the prologue; it really put my into Dain's state of mind and I think it worked better this way than if he had described his life. It lent more of an air of being unbiased the way it was done.
2. Is Dain a larger than life hero? Why? What do you like and dislike about him?
There are parts of him that are larger than life and parts that aren't. I did adore him though, especially his ready wit and ability to revel in how others fear him.
3. What do you think of Jessica Trent? Does she stand out amongst HR heroines?
I thought she was amazing and the perfect mate for Dain. She definitely stands out for her daring and intellect.
4. Does the banter and dialogue work for you in this book?
I loved it.
5. What do think of the discovery that Dain makes towards the end of the book? Did you understand his actions or did they rub you the wrong way?
I thought he handled the situation perfectly and I was extremely surprised by the solution he came up with.
6. What makes Dain tick? Did that resonate with you?
I think it's the need to be different from the pack on his own terms rather than solely due to his position based on his birth and looks.
7. If you were Jessica, would you have given Dain a chance to win your heart?
I have no idea but if I did I wouldn't be sorry.
8. Overall rating and thoughts? Did you like this one? Why or why not?
I liked it, especially the banter and insulting pet names.
9. Other books like Lord of Scoundrels you'd recommend?
None come readily to mind.
10. Favorite scenes or quotes?
"'By gad--do you mean to say I am as important a possession as your cattle?' She pressed her had to her heart. 'Oh, Dain, you are too devastatingly romantic. I am altogether overcome.'"

Thanks for posting your thoughts, Heather. I wish had time to reread this book. It's dear to me.
I think that Dain is a hate him or love him character. I loved him. He's a hot mess, but I like that about him. I think that he has lived down to his father's expectations of him as a beast. Also he decided he would be no one's b*tch in his life, so he cultivated a very hard, dangerous, ugly persona.
I loved that Jessica saw him and loved him and thought he was gorgeous, even though he's supposed to be ugly. I couldn't see him as ugly when I read this book.
As far as what happened at the end:
I think this reaction was realistic if not pretty. I did like that he did right by this new family member he found. Dain had to get past his self-hatred, and I feel that seeing himself in the boy was pivotal for this process.
I think that Jessica is a huge part of why I love this book so much. I feel she is one of the best romance heroines ever written. I like that she goes toe to toe with Dain and doesn't let him take advantage of her. She had him like putty in her hands, which I loved. I love when a tough hero becomes marshmallow for the heroine.
Man, I need to make time for a reread soon!

I think I'm one of those weird ppl who didn't really "get" it. At least the first time around. I've read it twice now. I think I liked it better the second time around. I wasn't too fond of Dain's rakish/debauched ways but I did understand his motives. The prologue did a wonderful job of letting the reader know where he came from. Indeed, it would be hard not to be anything else when coming from that kind of background.
Jessica was wonderful. I loved her character and how she didn't take his crap. She saw him as beautiful and that was one of the reasons I loved her. I wasn't too fond of the shooting scene and really had a hard time understanding how Dain could let it go so easily. But she had a strength of character that was very admirable.

Pamela, I normally do not like debauched rakes. I think I saw the tortured/hurting man beneath and that spoke to me. That prologue was key in this book for allowing me to feel sympathetic for Dain.
Totally agree with you about Jessica, except the shooting didn't bother me. I am not advocating violence, but I understand that he made her so mad she lost her head and that's why she shot him.

But realistically he could have easily died. If not from the shot then of infection. Wouldn't have been much of a story then of course.

2. Is Dain a larger than life hero? Why? What do you like and dislike about him?
Answer later.
3. What do you think of Jessica Trent? Does she stand out amongst HR heroines?
Strong without losing her femininity. She is more complex and multi-faceted than many.
4. Does the banter and dialogue work for you in this book?
LOVE it. My favorite part of any book!!!
5. What do think of the discovery that Dain makes towards the end of the book? Did you understand his actions or did they rub you the wrong way?
Totally understandable, and he's brash. I need to reread it.
6. What makes Dain tick? Did that resonate with you?
Control. His demonstrates his power by controlling those around him and I get this very well.
7. If you were Jessica, would you have given Dain a chance to win your heart?
Absolutely, but he's got win it. Nothing is given.
8. Overall rating and thoughts? Did you like this one? Why or why not?
5 stars. Practically perfect in every way. Love the banter and maneuverings.
9. Other books like Lord of Scoundrels you'd recommend?
Staying within Historical romance, I'd say Kleypas's "Love in the Afternoon" or "Devil in Winter". Neither has the strength and repartee of Dain and Jessica, bu the intensity of emotion and understated female fortitude.
