Pamela You cannot compare the books to the bones character at all. I find the show a time killer I don't hate it but at the same time you learn nothing from it unlike the books you pick up a bit here and there.
I like the Quebec aspect finding translatng in my head a bit of an exercise. Having learned Parisian french in school but here you mostly hear the Quebecois French.

One main thing I do not like is all the loses ends are tied up after Ms. Brennan has had a bump on the head and everything is laid out point by point in the last few pages.

Great escapism before getting into something heavy like my history or archeaology.

Tracy Tuggle I did not like this book. There was too much unnessary descriptive parts that made it too slow for me. I had a hard time getting into the story with all the language and side line issues.

It was well written but didn't keep my interest.

I am a very big fan of the "Bones" series on TV and there are too many differences between that and the books. I have to put aside the TV show and read the books for what they are; similar yet different.

I am reading another of her books (Flash and Bones) and so far it's more interesting. I guess I will have to just pick and choose which books of hers to read.

Have you read any of patricia Cornwell's Scarpetta books? They are of similar style and content but there is generally more action, and it is more centred around the main character and her family, as well as going much deeper into the croner aspect (squelchy bits) ;~)

Pamela I read Patricia cornwell's book on Jack the Ripper. did not care for it at all. Her smugness and twisting of fact really turned me ff.

I would like to try one of her Scarpetta novels though. Perhaps my next read. I love a really good mystery.

Tracy Tuggle I have not read any of Particia Cornwell's books. I will have to put these on my reading list. Thanks:)

Victoria Pearson I didn't like the Jack the ripper one, and I don't really like her other series either, but the Scarpetta books are ace :~)

Trish Kirby I don't like Patricia Cornwell's book except for the Jack the Ripper one.

Trish Kirby I do like Kathy Reichs books but couldn't get into Bones.

David Freas I gave up on Cornwell's Scarpetta books some time ago. They became bloated and left loose ends and I lost interest in the characters, didn't care if they lived or died.
Like Reichs's Brennan series much better but always find myself wondering in every book how a woman as smart as Brennan can be so dumb as to constantly walk into dangerous situations.
BTW, Reichs is a forensic anthropolgist and knows what she is talking about, having spent years plying her profession. Cornwell is a wannabe.

Pamela I've read all Kathy Reichs' books. I like them as a light read between more serious subjects. I must say I have learned some things on forensic anthropology from her books, would like to explore it further. As for the television show I watch it as popcorn television. I cannot see how Kathy Reichs' goes along with such a socially stunted personality as Bones is. It must be the comedian in her true personality.
I mostly like the stories that take place in Quebec.

Connie Wisniewski This was my favorite Reich's book. Her others are good, but this is the best. Try Val McDermid. Fantastic.

David Freas I agree, Pam. I can't believe someone as intelligent as Bones is that clueless to the conventions of social interaction. It annoyed me to the point that I stopped watching the show.

Pamela I can understand that completely. Unless she was Aspergers, then I would understand it.

David Freas My daughter really is as smart as they portray Bones, and her social sklls make Bones look look like a blithering idiot.

Connie Wisniewski I don't watch Bones. It makes my body ache.

Pamela Love that remark. Have to remeber it when commenting on the show. LOL

Kathy I really liked the book and went on to read some more of the Brennan novels!

Sarah Have read all the Katy Reichs books except the latest, but its on my to buy list. Read about 6 of the Patricia Cornwell books then was recommended Kathy Reichs and haven't'looked back, much prefer her style of writing.

Kathy Reichs is one of the few I actually have read every book and wait eagerly for the next one. I have actually paid for a couple of hers when I could not get it at my tiny library. I would never pay for Cornwell. I do like her, but dislike Cornwell at the same time. I am with Trish, I actually loved Jack the Ripper case book. Why I read more of hers. Now I want to read Ripper again after this thread.

Beth Gibson What makes Bones the TV show work is all the other great characters and the great interaction between them and especially the humor. I like the Bones' character in the books better, she is way more "normal", but I don't like the fact that she apparently thinks she can do it all by herself. As far as Patricia Cornwell, initially I liked the Kay Scarpetta books, but any more there is too much diversion about her gay daughter or stepdaughter or whatever she is and not enough plot.
