Kevin Milligan | 54 comments What does everyone think about this one? This was a surprising read for me. I enjoyed the characters and writing style a lot, struggled with the middle and loved the ending.

Robyn Brown | 4 comments I'm on page 167 of 278, I always take a bit to acclimate myself to some of these worlds, especially when they shadow ours. Since this book was written in 1984, at times I found it a little reminiscent of TRON, just because of the AI part, but on a much grander scale. I found the drug use amusing and the different implants visionary for the time. Will update when finished~got a late start on this one (6/26). If you liked this you might try Rainbow's End by Vernon Verge

Robyn Brown | 4 comments @Jaq~ I think it's worth the read. I always like to catch the ones I missed when they were new. This is from 1984 and surprisingly ahead of it's time...

Kevin Milligan | 54 comments Better than many others...no I do not. A worth while read to do during ones lifetime, sure. When I said that I struggled through the middle I have reasons as to why. Without giving too much a way in the form of spoilers I did not think that half of what was portrayed in this novel was necessary. I really loved the author's style of writing and would be interested in reading some of his other works, possibly even the second novel in this trilogy. I just hope that he stream lines them a little bit better. The ending was good and I enjoyed the trippy almost Inception style worlds that were put forward while Case was Jacked In.

Clyde (wishamc) I read Neuromancer many years ago. I thought it was inspired at the time, and went on to read the two sequels in the Sprawl trilogy. However, I found myself tiring of the style (cyberpunk?) toward the end.
Since then, the only thing I have read by Gibson is The Difference Engine, a dammed good and really different book which he co-wrote with Bruce Sterling.

David | 9 comments I liked it but his Sie of unexplained techno-babble from the very beginning put me off somewhat. By the end I understood what things were but for the first quarter of the book I spent a lot of time trying to refer back to things to work out what he was talking about.

Robyn Brown | 4 comments So! I am still stuck in Freeport, but I will finish soon! I agree with David about the techo-babble and trying to figure it out...I wanted to share this with you all~maybe you already know.. "Gibson's Cyber World Jumps From Page to Big Screen-Finally", Seven Arts Entertainment has optioned the book and started adapting it to the big screen! Hired director Vincenzo Natali -Gibson is supportive of choice....view more info at www.7artspictures.com !! Thought this was great timing, at least for us readers! This book was included in Time Magazine's list of 100 best English-language novels since 1923. Anyway, just thought I'd share!!

Kevin Milligan | 54 comments Hmmm...I wonder how this will turn out. I did not get the sensation that this book must be a movie but then again it may surprise me.

Agreed. More to the point, this is the book widely credited with inspiring the cyberpunk movement, and also clearly influenced a lot of sci-fi in the 90s, to include the Matrix. I'm not sure you can fully appreciate where modern sci-fi culture is going without reading this book.

message 11: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Milligan | 54 comments @Christopher I will agree with that but when it comes to this being a movie I just see it comparing to Tron, at least to those who never read the novel.

Bert Barling (bert_barling) | 1 comments The first time I read it in High School, I thought it had a good story but the writing was too dense. I recently re-read it though and loved it. I'm not sure what changed between then and now, but something about it just clicked on the re-read.
