Have you guys started reading?

Trisha I did not love the novel :-( it was an ok story, but I really didn't like the writing style. It seemed like major things would happen, but they would be condensed into a single sentance. It seemed to be lacking in description and "build up". Again, it's a good story, but the writing style just wasn't my favorite. I did like that the idea of knowing Gatsby was more exciting than actually knowing him, and that people would flock to his parties claiming to be his BFF when really they had no idea what he even looked like! Haha!

I agree. The book didn't start off too well, it seemed pretty promising in few parts, but I couldn't really understand why people 'love' it.

Maybe it was lack of understanding on my part, or maybe I have read too good books lately, but I couldn't understand what this book really wanted to convey.

Though I liked it's pace in the end, it's just a three-starrer for me. I can say that it was a let down. Probably I had very high expectations.

Nice that you're finishing The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy too. I might do it some time later.

That's cool, Nilay! One of the reasons I read the book now was to see the movie when it's out.

Danielle (nell1120) hi guys!

I've been a total slacker and will catch up with you all. I'll make Great Gatsby my August read as I've already read all three Hunger Games books (AMAZING!--I have yet to see the movie though).

I look forward to your thoughts on the Hunger Games

Ana (anardiaz) Oh grrrr I joined this book club late, and I missed my chance to read Gatsby with you all. I see that it wasn't received very well, I am one of those people that loves it, so it's kinda sad.

And why wouldn't I love it? It's about the perversion of the "American Dream," and loss, and fake-ness...

Still, I choose to not turn into an English Lit. teacher now, and just let this one be.

Danielle (nell1120) so one of the reasons I never got around to reading this was because I never got a copy. imagine my surprise when I found out I own a copy!!! I must have bought it again used bookstore a couple years ago and it was hidden on my shelf. ill try to get to it soon. ive been in a bit of a reading slump lately

It is easier after the second chapter. Give it a try, not that it will be really worth it :P
