Reading Rainbow was a TV program for children, on PBS (Public Broadcasting) from 1983 to 2006. Each episode featured a celebrity narrating a children's book, and also had children giving book reviews. My kids loved it - and me too!

When my daughter was in third grade, once a week I ate lunch with her and then volunteered in her classroom. Every day after lunch the school would broadcast Reading Rainbow into all of the third grade classrooms. It always tickled me to hear 100+ third graders quietly singing along, with the opening theme song.

What did you think of The Casual Vacancy?

In the opening scene, the one adult who is nice and decent, in the small town of Pagford, dies of an aneurysm. He was on the town council, so his passing causes a casual vacancy on the council.

The rest of the 503 page book concerns the effect his death has on the townsfolk, and the extremes some go, to in order to fill his council seat.

I kept reading, to the bitter end, in hopes that the book would get better. It didn't. In fact, it got even worse, for a character I had started to care about.

From now on, when I want to read something by J.K. Rowling, I will just re-read one of my HPs.
