Books on the Nightstand is a community of readers.
And we know that authors are readers, too.
As such, we welcome your participation in and contributions to our discussions, and we invite you to become part of the Books on the Nightstand community.

We do not invite you to spam us.

We like to think of the BOTNS Goodreads group as a cocktail party. Please behave as you would at a real cocktail party. Do not walk in the door and start shoving your book in people's faces. Don't go up to someone and yell, "Hey, I'm an author!". Don't set up a table at the front of our living room and try to sell your book to everyone who passes by it on the way to the bar.

If your first, second, or even tenth post is a message promoting your book, we consider it spam. In fact, any message that blatantly promotes your book is spam. Our community members will see through it, and your post will be flagged and marked as spam.

Our community loves and supports authors, but as human beings first. Be human.

Thanks.

Ann

S. Murphy | 1 comments Thank you!! Amazon discussion groups are similar (but without a kick-booty moderator); you see a thread you think might be interesting but the 3rd post in is by someone trying to sell her/his book. Sheesh! (By the way, I'm an author--and I find it annoying when other authors do such a thing. If I'm ever guilty, kick my booty!)

Excellent. A milieu with which I am quite familiar.

Call me a snob, but I do not care for cocktail parties where SPAM is served.

I would avoid hotels in Waikiki if I were you.

Sandi (sandikal) | 89 comments There's a great author blog post about this very issue. Now, I don't read the kind of books Heidi Belleau writes, but I would put her at the top of my list if I liked that genre.

True story: When I was about eight years old, my family went to Hawaii and stayed at the Waikiki Sheraton. For two weeks, for breakfast, lunch and dinner, I ate nothing but pineapple. Oh, wait. I take that back: I tried poi. Didn't like it. Went back to pineapple! :-)

P. Flaherty Pagan | 19 comments This is very sensible. However,I wanted to clarify one point. I am a listener and short story read-along participant who happens to be editing an anthology of short, short stories by women. I was thinking that short story readers make the best short story writers, but don’t want to spam people. It be would be uncool to invite submissions from members via the general announcement thread of our BOTNS group, yes?

Hmmm .. I would say that in this particular case, with our prior approval, and since you were kind enough to ask first, it would be best to create a special thread. Why don't you go ahead, start a thread that doesn't read too spammy (you know what I mean) and I'll hop on and post that I gave my OK.

Because I'm curious. And have a few stories here... :)
